Be it known that l, NELs J. LUNDEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the State of Washington, have ins 5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Brackets, of which the following is a specification.

is convenient to have them at ones desk, but when the machine is not in use it is objectionable to have it-occupy the space which could otherwise be utilized, therefore it has been the habit of many to place a typewriting machine in a deepL drawer of a desk, which necessitates lifting the typewriting machine from the drawer of the desk when it is to be used, and finding Ya suitable support for the machine. There are many other articles inv daily usein connection with which the above considerations apply.

T a d whi he object of my invention is to provide esk drawer with a folding bracket to ch is-attached a shelf so that when the bracket is extended the 'shelf will be projected above thetop of the drawer and the extreme end of the shelf will be projected beyond the edge of the drawer so ,that one edge of the shelf is supported by the edge of the drawer while the other edge of the shel f is supported by the folding bracket.

A typewriting machine, or other device, may be secured to this shelf so that when the device is not in use it' with the shelfv and bracket may be folded down into the drawer out of the way; with this and other objects in view my invention consists ofy the parts and combination of parts as 'will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

,The reference numeral 1 designates a suitable compartment, such, for instance, as a drawer cfa desk, in the bottom of which the lower end of the U shaped bracket member 2 is pivoted by means of suitable I-bolts or staples 3. 4 is another member of the bracket which is free from attachment to the compartment but is connected to the lower end of the cross arm 5 by means 70 of a link 6, the link having loose pivotal connection with the bracket members, the bracket member 4 having a cross arm 7 similar to the cross arm 5 of the bracket member 2. The bracket members 2 and 4 cross 75 each other, as clearly shown in F igure 2 of the drawing and are connected at their upper ends by means of a linkr8,.which`is loosely pivoted at its ends to the upper cross arms of the bracket members 2 and 4. A 80 shelf or leaf 9 is suitably secured to the link 8 between the upper ends ofthe bracket members 2 and 4A by means of screws and the like so thatl the Shelf can be maintained in a horizontal position-while it is being folded into and out of the compartment, whereby the article attachedto the leaf may be maintained in a horizontal position'during such movement of the leaf.

lower end of the bracket member 13 being prevented from moving rearward by means of its pivotal connection whereby when the parts are in these positions lthe two bracket members are held firmly in the extended position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. The shelf 11 is designed to support any article.

In Figures 5 and 6 I have shown still another embodiment of my invention7 which comprises two bracket members 16 and 17 which are rectangular in form, having two sides and top and bottom arms. The bottom arm of the bracket member 16 is pivotally secured at 18 to the bottom of the compartment, while the lower arm of the bracket member 17 is slidably mounted on the bottom of the compartment in guides 19. The upper ends .of -the bracket members 16 and 17 are secured together by means of the link 20, they connection between the link and the brackets being a pivotal one. To counterbalance the weight of the article placed upon the shelf 21 said shelf is pivotally connected to the upper arm of the bracket 16 and a coil spring 22 is provided which is anchored at one end vto the front wall of the comparte ment and connected at its other end to the lower arm of the bracket 17 so that as soon as an upward lifting force is applied tothe shelf21 the spring immediately exerts its power, pulling the lower end of the bracket member 17 toward the front of the compartment., thereby assisting in elevating the shelf 21.

In folding the bracket and leaf 21 within the compartment the spring 23 connecting the lower arm of the bracket 16 with the upper arm of the bracket .17 exerts a downward pull thereby counter-acting the power of resistance of the spring 22, thus enabling one to lower the shelf and bracket within the compartment without jar the spring 22 being under tension in the lowering movement. v

What I claim is 1. The combination with a compartment of a supporting leaf adapted to be moved into and out of said compartment7 a bracket having one arm thereof pivotally secured to said leaf and to the bottom of said compartment and having its other arm slidably connected to the bottom of said compartment, and means connecting the upper ends of said arms and spacing them from each other.

2. The combination with a compartment of a supporting leaf therefor adapted to be moved into and out of said compartmenty a bracket having one arm thereof pivotally secured to said leaf and to the bottom of said compartment andhaving its other arm slidably connected to the bottom of said compartment means connecting` the upper ends of said arms,- and spring` means connecting the upper end of said second named arm with the lower end of said first named arm.

The combination with a compartment having front, rear and side walls and a bottom of a supporting' leaf adapted to `be moved into and out of said compartment, a bracket having one arm *thereof pivotally secured to said leaf and to the bottom of said compartment and having its other arm slidably connected to the bottom of said compartment, means pivotallyA connecting the upper ends of said arms,4 and spring means normally urging'the lower end of said secondnamed arm toward the front wall of said compartment.
