LEWIS O. CULVER, OF WEST PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
JAR TOP FASTENER.
Application filed March 31, 1922. Serial No. 548,340.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnwrs O. OULVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vest Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar Top Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to means for fastening the tops of glass jars and whlch may be readily applied to or disconnected from the jar as required, whereby said jar may be conveniently handled and thorough- 1y cleaned after the contents have been removed.
The invention furthermore provides fastening means which are effective and in volve a simple construction, the parts being secured by the manipulation of a single lever.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
lVhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application,
Figure 1 is a side view of the upper portion of a jar illustrating the application of the invention,
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, taken at a right angle thereto, and
Figure 3 is a perspective View of the fastening means.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates a jar and 2 the top thereof, These parts may be of any usual construction and are shown to illustrate the application of the invention.
The fastening means comprise a coil 3, opposed arms 4 terminating in eyes 5, a lever 6 havin an eye 7 at one end which is looped into the eye 5 of one of the arms 4: and retainer coin rising similar or like sections 8 and 9 an a turnbuckle 10; The
section 8 has an eye 11 at one end which is vlooped into the eye 5 of the other arm" 4. The section 9 is formed with an eye 12 which is adapted to be engaged by the lever 6, The inner or opposing ends of the sections 8 and 9 are threaded for a short distance to cooperate with the threaded ends of the turnbuckle 10, whereby the retainer may be lengthened or shortened as required.
The coil 3 and arms. 4 constitute parts of a single wire of suitable length and gage. The intermediate portion of the wire is formed into the coil 3 and opposite end portions are bent to extend in parallel relatlon and perpendicular to the coil. 3. The coil 3 consists of a complete coil so as to encircle the jar 1 and a half coil in order to bring the arms 4 at opposite sides of the ar. The coil 3 is of such size as to clamp the ar 1. and prevent movement of the coil thereon after being properly adjusted. After the top 2 has been placed in position upon the jar 1, the retainer is adjusted to extend across the top and the lever 6 is passed through the eye 12 at the swinging end of the retainer, as indicated by the dotted lines in Figure 1, after which the outer end of the lever 6 is pressed downwardly to draw the retainer into clamping position, whereby to prevent displacement of the top 2.
lVhat is claimed is:
1. Means for securing the top to a jar, the
same consisting of a holder applied to the body of the jar, a sectional retainer pivoted at one end to the holder, a turn buckle adjustably connecting the sections, and a lever adapted to engage the swinging end of the retainer and having connection with the holder whereby to draw the retainer into fastening position- I 2. Means for securing the top to a jar, the same consisting of a holder applied to the body of the jar, a sectional retainer pivoted at one end to the holder, a turnbuckle adjustably connecting the sections, and a lever carried by the holder and adapted to engage the swinging end of the retainer to draw the same into fastening position,
3. Means for securing the top to a jar, the same consisting of a length of wire having its intermediate portion bent to provide a coil and a hasp and the end portions forming arms which terminate in eyes, a sectional retainer having terminal eyes, one at which; is looped into the eye of one of the arms, a turnbuckle adjnstably connecting the inner ends of the sections, and a lever engaging the other eye of the arm and the eye at the swinging end of the retainer.
4. Means for securing the top to a jar,
the same consisting of a length of wire having its intermediate portion bent to provide a coil and the end portions forming arms which terminate in eyes, a retainer having terminal eyes, one of which is looped into the eye of one ofthe arms, a lever engaging 'LEWIS O.
