Description

' 1,593,090 F. MARKWICK BAG FASTENER Filed April 19, 1926 2 I swim Patented July 2i), l fiii.
FREDERICK MA-RK'WICK, OF FALLS, PENNSYLVANIA.
BAG FASTENER.
Application filed. April 19, 1926, Serial No. 103,031, and in Canada August 4, 1925.
This application relates to improvements in bag fastening devices adapted to be used instead of twine, for closing the necks of numerous kinds of bags.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a new and improved form of bag fastener which can be effectively sealed, so that no one can tamper with the contents of a bag fastened thereby, without detection.
The device is of a type comprising a frame member having side arms for passage around one side of the bag neck, provided with a third pivoted arm for passage around the other side of the neck, and equipped with a Ushaped cross bar with which a hook on the end of the third arm is engageable, and a further aim of the invention is to provide novel connecting means between said U-shaped cross bar and the side arms of said frame member.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, and shown in the accompanying drawin Fig. 1 is a side elevation showing one form of the fastener applied to a bag.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the fastener in closed position.
Fig. 3 is an edge View showing the fastener opened.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing a different form of construction.
Fig. 5 is a detail elevation showing a dif ferent form of terminal for the third arm of the device shown in Fig. 4.
In the construction disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the numeral 1 designates an elongated frame having closely spaced, parallel, side arms 2 and an arm-connecting portion 40 3 which integrally connects the arms 2 at one end. The opposite ends 4 of these arms 2, are bent inwardly toward each other as shown in Fig. 1. A U-shaped cross arm 5 extends between the arms 2, near their inwardly bent terminals 4, said cross bar having eyes 6 which slidably and pivotally surround said arms. This cross bar is adapted to engage a hook 7 on the free end of a third arm 8, the other end of the latter hav ing an eye 9 which pivotally surroundsthe arm-connecting portion 3. The arms 2 occupy positions at one side of the bag neck and the arm 8 extends across the other side thereof, the hook 7 and cross bar 8 serving to fasten the device in a manner to tightly hold the bag closed. Preferably, the arms 2 and 8 are curved oppositely as shown so as to more readily embrace the neck of the bag. The free end of the hook 7 is formed in any suitable manner, with an eye 10, and after fastening the device, an appropriate seal 11 is passed through this eye and is suitably engaged with some other part of the fastener, so that the latter cannot be opened without detection, thus giving ample protection to the contents of the bag.
In the form of construction disclosed in Fig. 4, the arms 2 of the frame 1 have eyes 12 on their free ends, interlinked with the eyes 6 of the cross bar 5 Also in this form of construction, the seal-receiving eye 1O on the free end of the hook 7 is formed by bending the material from which the hook and the arms 8 are formed. This eX- act formation, however need not be followed precisely, as the seal-receiving eye in any form of the invention may be provided in any desired manner, and a hook 7 (Fig. 5) having no seal-receiving eye, may be provided for use with the form of construction shown in Fig. 4, if desired.
The invention is extremely simple and inexpensive yet it is very desirable and efficient, and on account of the excellent results obtainable from the details shown, such details are preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, modifications may be made.
I claim 1. A bag fastener comprising an elongated frame having spaced side arms and an arm-connecting portion at one end of said arms, a U-shaped cross bar at the other ends of said arms provided with eyes engaging said arms, and a third arm having at one end an eye surrounding said armconnecting portion, the other end of said third arm having a hook to engage said cross bar, the free end of said hook being formed with an eye to receive a seal.
2. A bag fastener comprising an elongated frame having spaced side arms and an arm-connecting portion at one end of said arms, the other ends of said arms having eyes, a U-shaped cross bar having eyes at its ends interlinked with the first named eyes and a third arm having at one end an eye surrounding said arm-connecting portion, the other end of said third arm having a hook to engage said cross bar.
8. A. bag fastener comprising an elongated frame having spaced side arms and an ar1n=conneeting portion. at one end of said a-rmgthe other ends ofsaidarins haveyes, and a third arm having at one end an eye surrounding said arm-connecting portion, the other end of said third arm having ahook to engage-saidcross bar, the freeend of said hook being formed with an eyeto. receive a seal. 10
