Description

E. A. FERRIS. HAIR CURLER. APPLICATION mzn JAN. 3. 1922.
Mia/way Patented Nov. 21,, 1922,

Apphcation filed January 3; 1922] Serial No. 526,717.
5. all whom it may concern:
it known that l, Envrn Jili.FERRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at YVestwood, in the county of Lassen and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, or which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hair waving or curling devices and has particular reference to cevice oi the char acter described formed oi a single strip o't metal and adapted to be bent upon itself for retaining a portion of the hair of the user therein, whereby a wave. or curl is readily formed. i
The principal object of this invention 15 to produce a device of the character described which is equipped with means formed integral with the device for assuring rigidity to certain parts of the hair waver or curler and permitting the other parts to be readily flexed orbent so as to presenta finished and attractive hair waver or curler.
Another object of this invention is to produce a device of the character described which is simple and light in construction, economical to manufacture, highly serviceablein use, neat in appearance when worn, and comfortable-to the wearerv by reason ot' the absenceof projecting ends so annoying in the use of other types of hair wave'rs.
Other objects and advantages will be ap parent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing how the device is bent adjacent its endsand at one of its extremities,
3 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 4, h
Fig. 4 is-a cross section on of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is an inverted perspective view of a modified form of the device,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another modified form of the device with the ribs and rolled edges removed and disclosing to advantage the points of bending, and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail showing the line a r- E the formation of the curl on the device, with the end of the said device being bent and received in the curl.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 designates as a whole alight fiat metal strip or body provided with op positely disposed tapered end portions ii and 12. Centrally disposed in thepreterred form of the device, I have provided a rib or corrugation 13 of substantially rectangular configuration, which corrugation serves to reenforce or stifien the device and prevents a bending of the same adjacent this particular point.
The device is weakened at predetermined points throughout its length for the, purpose oii readily bending the device, the points of bending being indicated by the numerals 14, 15, 16 and 17-. While the preferred manner of weakening the device is to anneal the temper of the metal at the above mentioned points, nevertheless, the strip may also be reduced in thickness at these particular-points to likewise accomplish a ready and easy bending of the same. By tapering the device adjacent its entremities, as above referred to, it is evident that when the device is folded back upon itself,
that the shape of theend portions allows them'to pass each other, when it is so desired. The annealing of the device at the )oints 14 and 17 permits the waver, adacent its extremities, to be rendered soft and pliable and thus easily bent, whereby the extremities can be forced into the hair. This feature is shown to advantage in Figs. 2 and 7, and it will be manifest by this flexing of the extremities thatprojecting ends are eliminated.
In the preferred form of the invention as shown to advantage in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the tapered end portions 11 and 12 have likewise rornied therein ribs or corrugations 18 and 19 respectively, which ribs conform to the shape of the said end portions and serve to render the'same as stiff and rigid as is the central portion of the body equipped with the corrugation 13.
In Figure 5 .l have shown a modified form of the device with the same principle in mind of reen'forcing the central portion of the body and the end portions. In this form of the device instead of employing ribs, I have rolled or bent the edges 20 and 21 over the central portion of the body and have likewise rolled or bent the edges 22 and 23 over the end portions of the body. These rolled edges 22 and 23 are adapted to conform to the shape of the end portions. By providing these respective rolled edges the same result willbe obtained as in the provision of the corrugations, viz; a stiffening of the metal with a consequent rigidity in'iparted thereto, which serves to make the hair curler retain its shape.
In Figure 6 l have shown another form of the device and have entirely eliminated the reenforcing ribs and rolled edges, and have indicated at the points 24, .25, 26 and 27 how the temper may be annealed 'or the thickness reduced so as to provide the con venient points of bending.
In the use of any of the forms of the device, the hair is wrapped about the central portion and a curl is formed thereon and then the respective tapered end portions are bent down by the fingers of the" user until they lie in a plane parallel to the plane of the central portion, and next the extremities,'through the medium of the fingers of the user, are forced into the formed wave or curl. After the wave or curl has been formed, the strip can be again bent to its normal formation as shown to advantage in Figure l, and can be repeatedly used. The: temper of the metal at the predetermined points of bending can be made soft and ductile and yet tough enough to stand repeated bending and thus the device can be used many times without danger of a breaking of the device at the weakened points.
From this construction it will be apparent that I have provided a hair waver or curler, which is not only light in construction, and accordingly of no annoyance to the user, but also a device which is strong and durable and serves as a positive keeper and retainer of the curl, withoutthe danger of the device being accident-ally displaced from the hair of the user. i
While I have shown the device preferably to be used as a hair curler, nevertheless, it is to be understood that the device has various other uses, such as holding together draperies, millin'ery articles, yarn and a variety of fancywork or materials.
In order to improve the efiiciency of the hair curler, a suitable covering made of paper, cloth or leather can readily be placed around the" hair curler, which covering will prevent the edges of the metal from cutting the hair.
It is to be understood that the forms of my invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape,
size and arrangement of parts may be resorted .to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A hair waver or curler comprising a metal strip weakened at predetermined points throughout its length, said strip adapted to be bent upon itself with the bends occurring at the weakened points, substantially as and for the pu-rpose described.
'2 A hair waver comprising a flat metal strip weakened at predetermined points throughout its length, said strip terminating in tapered end portions and adapted to be bent upon itself with the bends occurring at the weakened points, substantially as and for the purpose described.
'3. A; hair waver including a flat metal strip weakened at predetermined points throughout its length, said strip adapted to be bent upon itself with the bends occurring at the weakened points, and corrugations extending throughout the length of the strip with the exception of the weakened points, substantially as and for the purpose described.
l. A hair curler comprising a flat'meta-l strip weakened at predetermined points throughout its length, said strip terminating in tapered end portions and adapted to be bent upon itself'with the bends occurring at the weakened points and corrugations ex tending throughout the length of the strip with the exception of the weakened points, with the end corrugations corresponding to the conformation of the end portions.
5. A hair curler comprising a flat meta]. strip weakened at predetermined points throughout its length, and terminating in tapered end portions, said strip adapted to be bent upon itself with the bends occurring at the weakened points, a substantially rectangular corrugation centrally formed on said strip, and end corrugations provided on the tapered end portions of said strip, the
said end corrugations corresponding to. the
conformation of the tapered end portions.
. In testimony whereof I, affix my signature.
