SAFETY nezon.
Application filed March 25, 1921. Serial No. 455,443.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. LAMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, tain new and useful-Improvements in Safety Razors, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to safety razors and more particularly to the kind having a two-edged blade which is adjustable and provided with a clamping handle of the bolt type. l v
Among the objects of this invention is to provide a safety razor which is easily assembled and disassembled, highly eflicient and of simple construction.
A further object is to provide a simple mechanism for adjusting the width of the guard to the varying Widths of the blade, said mechanism being separate and distinct from that for clamping the blade in position.
pass and t erebykeep In safety razors the blades vary not only as regards the keenness of the edge, but, b
some blades are slightly narrower than otners, and thence the protection afforded by the guard varies. A variation of as much as a half millimeter will very considerably affect the likelihood of cutting oneself.
have devised a very simple and easily constructed device which permits the extension or withdrawal of the guard by a millimeter or two on each side by a very simple and convenient operation. Reference is to be had'to the accompanying drawing wherein a specific embod ment of my invention is illustrated. Figure'l is an end viewqof my assembled. I
Fig. 2 is a detail plan view show ng the flexible, adjustable guard. I I
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the slotted back plate.
Fig. 4 is a in assembled condition. The device comprises a screws on to a front plate 2. The razor blade 3 is positioned between the front plate 2 and a flexible guard 4, andv on the-other side of the guard 4 there is placed the back device when handle 1 which plate 5. This plate 5 is' providedwith slots hieh and 9 through w on the front plate 2 this back plate 5 in (land perforations 7, 8 the studs not shown) position. The flexible guard have invented -cerfore prevented.
. so that the handlel may plate, a flexible guard, a
I 4 consists of the serrated side members 10 and transverse members 11 which are substantially parallel with each other and are preferably integral with the side members 1O.
These members 11 are provided substantially at the center with projections 12 and when the razor is in assembled condition these bowed transverse members 11 are positioned in the slots'6 of the back plate 5, and longitudinal movement of the guard 4 is there- The projections. 12 extend beyond the slots 6 and are adapted to be engaged by a milled nut or screw sleeve 13.
It will be seen that by bearing upon the projections 12 the to flatten thereby, outwardly moving the serrated side members 10 in a direction substantially perpendicular to the cutting edge of the blade, and when pressure upon the projections 12 is removed the side members 10 will come together. The milled nut 13 therefore affords a convenient means for the guard and widening and contracting thereby regulating the protection afforded the guard,
' It will befurther seen that this movement of the guard 4 by the nut 13 is entirely independent of the rest of the device and does not result in movement of other parts of the razor. The blade 3. front plate 2 and back plate 5-are clamped and held in lace by screwing plate 2. The blade 3 is neither'tightened-nor loosened by the movement of the guard by is desirable to have the sleeve nut 13 It the bowedthe handle 1 onto the. ront' flexible guard 4. Will tend the central stud on the front plate 2 threaded be screwed upon it.v
Itis tobe understood that my is not limited to the specific details set forth in theiforegoin'g arrangement and construc- 1 tion and sincenumerous. modifications may be effected without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention I desire that only bottom plan view of my device front plate and said guard, said guard being disposed between said blade and said back plate, means for clamping said blade "and guard between the front and back plates and means independent of said clamping means and comprising a friction nut thread blade between said invention I ed upon the handle of said razor for sliding said guard in a direction substantially per? pendicular to the cutting edge of said blade.
2 In a safety razor, a front plate, a back plate, a flexible guard, a blade between said front plate and said guard, said guard being disposed between said blade and said back plate, means for clamping said blade and guard bet-ween the front and back plates and means independent of said clamping means for sliding said guard in a direction substantially perpendicular to the cutting edge of said, blade.
3. In a'safety razor, a front plate, a back plate, a flexible guard, a blade between said front plate and said guard, said guard being disposed between said blade and said back plate, means for holding said blade substantially fixed relative to the front and back plates, means ,for clamping said blade and guard between the front and back plates and means independent of said clamping means for sliding said guard in a direction substantially 'perpendicular to the cutting edge of said blade. 4. In a safety r'azor, a front plate, a back plate, a flexible guard, a blade,-a handle provided with a single means forclamping said blade, guard and front and back plates and means comprising a friction nut upon said handle for sliding saidguard in a direction' substantially perpendicular to the cutting edge of said blade. 5. In a razor, a flexible element constituting a safety guard for the cutting edges of said razor and comprising serrated side members joined by bowed, transverse members, a handle and a threaded member upon said handle adapted to-engage said bowed members and means for guiding the movement of said, side members in a direction substantially perpendicular to-the cutting edges of said razor when said threaded member acts upon salcl bowed, transverse members.
prising serrated side members, transverse members oining said side members, said transverse members being bowed and having 7. In a safety razor, a flexible guard con'sprising a handle of said razor the movement of sald side members in a disubstantially central 6. In a safety razor, a flexible guard compair of serrated side members, a pair of substantially parallel transverse members joining said side membersysaid transverse members being bowed and engaging with a friction nut threaded upon the and means for guiding rectlon substantially perpendicular to' the cutting edges of the blade of the razor when In a safety razor, a front plate, a slotted backplate, a flexible guard comprising serrated side members and transverse members joining said side members, a blade between said front plate and said guard, said guard being disposed between said blade 7 said transverse members being bowed and passing through the slots in said back plate.
In a safety slotted back plate, a. flexible guard comprising a pair of serrated side members and a pair .of substantially parallel transverse members integral with and joining said side members, a blade and said guard, said guard being disposed between said blade and said back plate and said transverse members being bowed, passing through theslots in V enga ing a movable threaded member on the hand e of the razor.
v 10. In a; safety razor, a front plate, a slotted back plate, a flexible guard comprising-a pair of serrated side members and a pair of substantially parallel transverse members integral with and joining said side members, a blade between said front plate and saidguard, said guard being disposed and said back plate and said friction nut acts upon said bowed, transverse members.
razor, a front plate, a I
between said front plate said back plate and between said blade and said back plate, said transverse members being bowed, having projections and passing through the slots in said handle provided withmeans for clamping said blade and back'plates and means comprising a friction nut threaded upon said handle for engaging back plate, a
guard between the front and the transverse members upon said guard and sliding the serrated side members substantially perpendicular to the cutting edge of the blade. a a
In testimony whereof I aflix my si nature. ARTHUR
