This invention relates to supports, and more particularly to a support especially designed for use in the applicatlon of jar closures or the like. v
The primary object of the invention is to provide a support which will grip the jar under operation, and securely hold the same against movement to permit the closure or cover to be applied with facility, eliminating any possibility of a person burning his hands.
Another object of the invention-is the provision of an adjustable support, adapting the. device for use in connection with jars of various sizes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings: a
Figure 1 is a plan view of a support constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same.
Figure 3 is a sectional view through the support.
Figure 4: is a sectional view taken on line 41- -4: of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the device is shown as including a; body portion 5, which has a curved portion 6 curved to conform to the curvature of a fruit jar or the like, to be supported within the body portion.
Laterally extending arms ,7 are formed integral with the body portion and are disposed adjacent to the upper extremity thereof, where they are connected as by means of the horizontal bar 8 which is secured to the arms 7 as by means of the; screws 9. A pair of spaced arms 10 are formed adjacent to the base of the body por- 'tion' .5 I and iQXiElldf-3lat6f91ly therefrom, the arms l0 being disposed-directly under-the Harm'sifor 'rpurposes: to :be hereinafter m'ore Cooperating with the curved walls of the body portion is a movable jaw indicated at ll, which jaw is of a length equal to the length of the body portion 5 to grip an article supported by. thev body portion,
throughout the'length of the article to insure against twisting of the article. The movable aw 11 is formed with a cut out portion 12 which accommodates the head 13 of thescrew 14; which has an operating wheel 15 secured to the outer end thereof, so that movement of the wheel will cause a relativev movement of the jaw 11 which is connected thereto, it being understood that the screw 14.- operates through athreaded opening in the bar 8.
In order that the lower extremity of. the jaw 11 will beheld in vertical alinement with the side wall of the article positioned in the support, an elongated opening 17 is provided, which is formed with depressions 18 adapted to accommodate the laterally extending pins 19 that are formed integral with the movable jaw 11. Thus it will be seen that by moving the pins 19 from the depressions in which the same are positioned, as shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing, and by placing the same in the depressions of the arm 10 adjacent to the free ends thereof, the space between the jaw 11 and body.
portion of the support will be made greater 7 adapting the device for use with a jar of greater size.
The inner curved surface of the body portion 5 aswell as the inner curved surface of the jaw 1-1, is supplied with a cushioning element 20 embodyingrubber or the like. Formed integral with the bodyportion 5, is a depending arm 21which is formed with an inwardly extended portion 22 having a threaded opening to accommodate the screw 28, which carries a head 24 at one end thereof and an operating wheel 25 at the opposite end, the head 24 being designed to clamp under atable or similar support to secure the body portion against movement.
a fruit jar or the like, which has been filled with hot'fruit may be readily gripped within the body portion 5 and held against movement while the cover or closure is bein p0- sitioned, eliminating t e necessity o the From the foregoing it will be seen that person holding the jar to accomplish the applying of the cover. I
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A support including a body portion. a movable jaw a pair of laterally extending arms formed adjacent to the upper end oi the body portion, a pair of arms extending from the lower end of the body portion, the lastmentioned arms having elongated openings formed with depressions, laterally extending pins disposed within the openings and adapted to be positioned in the depressions to adjust the movable jaw with respect to the body portion, a bar connecting the arms 7 of the pair adjacent to the upper end of the body portion, and means extending through the bar and contacting with the movable j aw for adjusting the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
