Be it known that I, FRANK II. Swanson, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on a Loose-Leaf Map Holder, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices by which large nun'ibers of maps, charts or other documents may be secured together to have ready reference as desired for study or lecture room (ilemonstration. One object thereof is to provide an improved arch or loop the relatively movable parts of which are adapted to be locked together so as to form a rigid con tinuous body, and yet readily opened to add to or remove the maps. It further provides for attachin said arches or loops to a suspending cross bar; to so construct the several parts of the device that they will consume the smallest possible amount of space when carried in stock; that they may be packed in compact and secure form for shipment with the minimum amount of weight and bulk of packing material and also that the different parts may be readily assembled and the possibility of mistake in so doing be avoided.

The principles of my invention are illustrated in the drawings in which Fig. 1, represents a front elevation of my invention, Fig. 2, is an enlarged sectional view on. line 2, 2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, is a similar section on line 3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is an enlarged detail of a locking device.

Further describing my invention with reference to the drawings in which like characters of reference denote like parts throughout; I provide a suitable supportin standard comprising a tubular body portion, 1, having legs 2 attached to a sliding collar .3, which should be provided with a thumb screw l, or other clamping means. A fixed collar 5 on the lower end of the body portion is pivotally connected by links 6 to the legs. And an extension rod 7 telescopes within the body portion 1, and is fixed at any suitable point of extention by means of a thumb screw.

Said rod should be reduced in diameter at the upper end providing an annular shoulder 8. The cross-bar 10, has an opening 11 in the lower end thereof and the same should be provided with a metallic socket 12 within Serial No. 342,503.

which the reduced portion 13, of support 7' is received. The said socket should further be provided with an annular flange 14: at its lower end adapted to rest upon the shoulder 8, thus affording ready revolution of the cross-bar.

The map attaching means or loops are shown in substantially full size in Fig. 2. They comprise a principal arched member which is rigidly attached to a foundation piece 21 and a locking member 22 which is pivotally attached at 23 to said foundation piece at 23. As shown in the drawing the said locking piece is bored longitudinally at its free end to form a recess 25, the lower portion of which is cut away at 26. The free end of the arch is reduced in diameter to form a lug 27 of external diameter correspondin substantially to that of the recessed end of the locking member. When assembled as shown in Fig. 2 the said lug is received in the depression in the end of the locking member passing the beveled projection 28, the relative position being maintained by the natural spring of the arched member. It is manifest that the relative construction of the free ends of the arched and locking members may be reversed if desired; in this case the lug should be placed on the locking mem ber and the recess on the end of the arched member will open inside the arch.

The rigid end of the arched member should project inwardly at 29 below the foundation piece 21 and then be received within the opening 30 in the cross-bar. The foundation piece is received within a transverse gain in the face of the cross-bar so as to be Substantially flush therewith and is' held in place by a screw 31 introduced from the rear of the foundation piece. In drilling the hole which is to receive the swinging portion 22, it should be made at an angle as shown so as to permit the locking member when pivoted as shown sufficient movement inside the loop to permit the maps or other documents to be introduced, removed or shifted as desired.

The maps which are to be used in connection with my device should be provided with openings 32 corresponding to the number of loops in the cross-bar, and protected by metallic grommets 33.

I claim:

1. In a map holder, a stand, a cross-bar thereon, provided with transverse gains movableupwardly in the plane of the arched member within an area defined by the loop formed therewith, andimeansfor operatirelv securing the ends of said members together by the resilient action of the arched member saic last-named means embodying the provision of a longitudinal recess in the end of one of said members, the lower portion of the Wall oi which is partially cut away and the tree end ofthe other member being of a diameter corresponding to that of the recess.
