WASHBOARD.
' Application rues June 18, 1920. Serial no. scenes.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, dnrrnnsoiv .A. Tired ma acitizen of the Unitedfitates, residing at'Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in ll ashboards; and it do hereby declare the following to.be a full, clear. andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
My invention relates to improvementsjin washboards having means for removahlysupporting a scrubbing element.
An important object of this'invention is to provide a washboard of the character de scribed, having means for quickly and conveniently replacing the scrubbing element, when the samebecomes worn or broken.
A further objet of the invention is to provide a washboard of the character described which is durable in wear, of highly simplilied construction, fneat in appearance and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, 1
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a washboard embodied in my invention,
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same,
Figure 3 is a central vertical transverse sectiontaken through the same.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken on line 4- 1 of Figure 1,
Figure 5. IS a vertical section through the upper portion. of one side of the washboard,
Figure 6 is a fragmentary perspective of one of the supports for theremovable scrubhing element, and,
Figure 7 is a vertical section through a portion of the framework of my improved 'Washboard.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred. embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 generically designates my improved washboard. 1
My improved washboardi comprises in part, a pair of spaced parallel uprights 11 having longitudinally extending grooves 12 disposed in their inner faces. As more clearly shown in Figure 2, the upper-end portions of the sides 11 are connected by a transversely extending cap board 13. The opposite end portions of thecap board 13 are reduced as at 1 1, said reduced end portions being adapted to extend into the longitudinally extending grooves 12. {inc of the reduced end portions '14 is rigdly'secured within the longitudinal groove 12 by retaining pins 15. The opposite reduced end portion 141 is provided with a transversely e:-;. tending aperture 16 alining with a transversely extending aperture 17 in the upper portion of one of the upright members 1.1.
The apertures 16 and 17 are adaptedfor the reception of a downl pin 18, serving as a hinge. With reference to Figure 1, it will be apparent that one of the uprights 11 has pivotal connection with the remainder of the frame. A. top plate 20 is disposed beneath the cross member 13 and has its end portions extending into the longitudinally extending grooves 12.
A scrubbingelement 21 is disposed witl in the frame 10 and has its longitudinal edges disposed within the longitudinally extending grooves 12. Upper and lower re taining strips 22 and 23, respectively, are provided with grooves 24: extending longitudinally of their length and adapted for the reception of the upper and lower edges of the scrubbing element 21. The upper and lower retaining strips are provided with reduced end portions 24- extending into the longitudinal grooves 12. The end portions of strip 23 abut shoulders provided by the end walls at the rooves 12. The lower portions of the uprlghts 11 are provided with transversely extending apertures 25 receiving a securing member in the form of a retaining pin 26 having threaded engagement with a nut 27. With reference to Figure 1. it will be apparent that the retaining pin serves to rigidly hold the several parts of the frame 10 together. In the use of my improved washb oard, it will be apparent that the ready replacing of the scrubbing element 21 may be effected by the partial disminor changes in arrai'igement and construe tion of parts as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the appended claims.
\Vhat I claim is:
1. A washboard comprising, a. pair of spaced uprights having longitudinally ex tending grooves in their inner faces, said grooves extending for the greater portion of the length of the uprights and having end walls adjacent the lower ends of the strips forming shoulders; a cross member secured to the upper portions of the uprights and having pivotal connection with one of said uprights; a removable scrubbing element arranged between said uprights and having its longitudinal edges disposed within the longitudinal grooves of the uprights; trans versely extending retaining strips having their end-portions reduced and removably disposed within said longitudinal grooves, said strips having grooves at their inner faces and extending longitudinally of their length and adapted for the reception of the'upper and lower ed es of the scrubbing element, a plate removably disposed in. said longitudinal rooves and: in contactwith said cross member andthe uppermost retaining strip, said uprights having alining apertures in their lower end portions; the adjacent retaining strip abutting said shoulders and a 2. A wash board having side bars with longitudinal grooves in their inner faces terininating short of the lower ends to provide shoulders, a transverse bar intermediate the side bars having end portions extending into the grooves and resting on said shoulders, a scrubbing element removably extending into aid grooves and resting on said transverse bar, one of the side bars being movable :1 way from the transverse bar to permit removal of the scrubbing element, a her to join the side bars and the securing member bearing against the transverse baito assist the same in resisting strains imposed thereon by the scrubbing element during the crubbing operation.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
