Be it known that I, CARL RUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wharton, in the county of Wharton and State of Texas. have invented certain new and useful improvements in lVashboards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in washboards.

The object of this invention is to provide a washboard which will effect a rapid cleansing of the clothes with a light rubbing, thus saving time, labor and unnecessary wear upon the goods being washed.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a washboard which willbe inexpensive in construction, light and durable and can be manufactured and sold at a low cost.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.

Referring to the drawing, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the legs of the washboard, each of which is provided on its inner face with a longitudinally extending groove 3. The upper ends of the legs are connected together by the transverse head board 4 which extends laterally beyond the exterior of each of the legs thereof. A transverse supporting block 5 is secured to the opposing faces of the legs 1 and 2 respectively in rear of the longitudinal grooves 3 and adjacent the upper ends thereof. A transverse supporting brace 6 is secured to the opposing faces of the legs 1 and 2 respectively adjacent the lower ends thereof and in rear of the grooves fragmentary transverse sec- Spccifieation of letters latent.

3-and in spaced relation to the block 5. A. vertical'brace 7 is secured to the opposing faces of'the braces 5 and 6respectively centrally of their ends and constitutes the back of the board when assembled.

A corrugated zinc plate 8 has its opposite side edges fitted in the rooves 3 in the opposing faces of each of the legs 1 and 2 respectively. A straight vertical portion of the corrugated plate is secured to the forward face of the block 5, as at 9, an adjoining straight horizontal portion secured upon the upper side of the block 5, as at 10, and the plate then xtended upwardly, as at 11 offset as at 1.2, and the upper end 13 thereof secured to the rear surface of the head block 4, the portion 11 of the upper end of the corrugated zinc plate constitutes a soap receiving compartment it on the front face of the board as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing.

The lower end of the corrugated plate extends'downwardly and is secured to the front side of th reinforcing block 6 as at 15 having its terminal bent inwardly and secured to the under side of the block 6 as at 1.6 thus rigidly positioning and securing the corrugated zinc plate between the opposing faces of the legs 1 and 2 respectively and to the

5 and 6 of the board.

A pair of transversely arranged reinforcing straps 17 are secured as at 18 to the rear surfaces of the legs 1 and 2 respectively and to the lower supporting block 6 as at 19. These straps may be constructed -of metal or any other material suitable for the purpose. A pair of reinforcing straps 21 are secured in a vertical plane to the legs 1 and 2 and have their upper ends extended laterally and secured'to the block 5 as at 22 to reinforce. the upper portion of the board as illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing.

What is claimed is A washboard having legs, spaced transverse frame members connecting the legs, a scrubbing member in a single piece having a scrubbing portion and an ofiset shoulder portion extending from the scrubbing portion. said legs having grooves to receive the side edges of the scrubbing portion, a back exprovide a soap compartment, a third transverse frame member, and said scrubbing member having an offset flan e extending in 15 the same direction as the rst mentioned shoulder portion and overlapping said third transverse frame member.
