HAYRAGK FASTENER.
7 Application filedullliay- 2'7,
To all whom 2'25 may concern v Be it known that VViLL'L-mr SoHUimni-m,
a citizen of the United titates residing at Minnesota Lake, in the county of F aribault 5 and State of Minnesota, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hayrack Fasteners, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. I
This invention relates to a hay rack fastener and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general'character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be effectively employed for the purposes desired.
Another object of the invention is to pro- .vide a device of this general character hav ing novel and improved means whereby the same may be readily applied in working position and which operates in a manner to tightly hold or clamp the rack or a portion thereof to a side trail or board of a wagon body or the like.
The invention consists -in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hay rack fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and, advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary ,view in perspective of a hay rack fastener constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention Figure 2 is a View in front elevation of the structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of the structure as herein disclosed;
Figure 4 is a view in perspective of one of the members comprised in my improved fastener, a portion being broken away; and
Figure 5 is a view in perspective of the second member comprised in my improved fastener as herein set forth.
As disclosed in the'accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a fragmentary portion of a 1922. Serial No. 564,053.
side rail or board of a wagon body resting upon a transversely disposed sill or beam 2.
'3 denotes a fragmentary portion of a botboard or rail 1 when in applied position.
The plate i is provided with longitudinally spaced openings 5 through which suitable fastening means may be disposed for holding the plate t to the rail or board 1.
One end portion of the plate 4 is continued by a shank or stem 6 which is adapted to be directed through the sill :2 and upon the outer orfree end portion of the shank or stem 6 is a clamping nut T which engages the sill 2 from below and whereby the said rail or board 1 is effectively maintained in applied position relative to the sill 2.
The lower longitudinal marginal portions of the plate 4 are defined by the outstanding flanges 8 and pivotally engaged with the upper portion of one of said flanges 8 is a swinging latch or holding member 9, which when disposed across the space between the flanges S, is engaged with the spring catch 10 carried by the second flange 8.
The upper portion of the plate at is trans versely enlarged as at 11 and the side and top edges of said enlarged portion 11 are defined by the outstanding flanges 12, the top flange having its outer edge defined by the depending flange 13.
The member B comprises an elongated arm 14 provided at one end portion with a head 15, a marginal portion of the top or outer surface of the head 15 being defined by an outstanding flange 16 which is adapted to engage rearwardly of the flange 12 when the members A and B are in locking relation. When the members A and B are in looking relation the member B overlies the member A with the flange 15, as just stated, engaged behind the flange 12 and the arm 14 positioned between the flanges 8 of the plate l. The catch 9 is then swung across the space between the flanges 8 and over the arm 1A whereby the members A and B are effectively held against separation but in a provided with longitudinally disposed slots 18 through which are disposed from within the headed shanks or bolts 19. The shanks or bolts 19 are also disposed through the side arms 20 of the U-shaped member 21, said arms 20 overlying the arms 17. Engagedwith each of the shanks or bolts 19 and coacting with an arm 20 ot the member 21 is a clamping nut 22. By this means the member 21 may be adjusted lengthwise of the arms 17 as the occasions of practice may re quire and be eflectively maintained in such adjustment.
Before the member B is operatively engaged with the member A the transverse beam 3 of the rack is disposed between the arms 17 and the arms 20 of the member 21 with the intermediate portion of the member 21 above the beam 3. The member 21 is then adjusted lengthwise of the arm 1? to cause the intermediate portion of said member to have proper contact with the top tace oi? the beam 3 when the members A and B are in relative locking engagement.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a hay rack fastener constructed in accordance with myinvention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and' operated, and it will also be obvious that my in vention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and. for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myselfto the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in prestice except hereinafter claimed.
I claim:

A fastening device of the class described comprising a plate provided withparallel spaced flanges and having an outstanding flange provided with an inwardly disposed flange, a member provided with a head, said head having a flange to engage inwardly of the depending flange of the plate, a portion of said member being received between the flanges of the plate when the flange of the member is engaged inwardly of the depending flange of the plate, means for holding said member between the disposed flange, a member provided with a head, said head having a flange to engage inwardly of the depending flange of the plate, a portion of said member being received between the flanges of the plate when the flange of the memberis engaged inwardly of the depending flange of the plate, means carried by the parallel flanges for holding said member between the parallel flanges, and a work engaging member car ried by the head of the member.
3. A fastening device of the class described comprising a. plate provided with parallel spaced flanges and having an outstanding flange provided with an inwardly disposed flange, a member provided with a head, said head having a flange to engage inwardly of the depending flange of the plate, a portion of said member being received between the flanges of the plate when the flange of the member is engaged inwardly of the depending flange of the plate, a swinging latch carried by one of the parallel flanges and of a length to bridge the space between the flanges to hold a member between the parallel flanges, a catch carried by the, second parallel flange to engage the latch, and a work engaging member carried by the head of the member.
4. A device of the class described comprising two separable members having coacting means for connecting the same, spaced arms pivotally engaged to one 0t said mem bers, a member substantially in the form ot an .inverted U having its side arms overlying the flrstnamed arms, and means for connecting the side arms of the inverted U-sha ed member and the first named arm.
5. r device of the class described comprising two separable members having coacting means for connecting the same, spaced arms pivotally engaged to one of said members, a member substantially in the torm'ot an inverted U having its side arms overlying the. first named arms, means for connecting the side arms to the inverte-tl Ushaped member and the first named arm,
said U-shaped member being relatively ad-
