IMPROVEMENT IN EARTH-cLosETs.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,239, dated September 30, 1873 application filed 7 April 28, 1873.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARK C. HAsKlNs, of the city of New Albany, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Earth- Closets, of which the following is a specification The first part of this my invention consists in a box or case made in the form of a right angle, as shown in the drawing, one part of which constitutes the seat, while the other contains the hopper in which the sand or dust is deposited for use. The case may be made of any suitable size or material, and of any required ornamental design. The lower portion, or that part constituting the seat, is divided first into two compartments, the first of which is used exclusively as a receptacle for the vessel, while the other is again subdivided by a shelf near the top, leaving only sufticient room for the sliding drawer to work between it and the under side of thebottom of thehopper. This drawer is made in theform of an elongated box, apart of which contains the sand or earth. The remainder, including vthe bottom, is intended merely to complete the slide. This bottom is 'perforated with slot-openings immediately under the earth-box in such a manner as to permit the dust to fall through easily, the dust being supplied from a hopper in the ease at the back as the drawer is drawn out. This drawer is secured to a slide-cover under the hopper, which is also intended to prevent the sand or dust from falling through at any point except into the drawer. This slide is also provided with arms running out the corners in front to be used as a means to operate the drawer and blower.

The second part of this, my invention, consists in an air box or blower placed on the under side of the shelf immediately under the drawer, with an opening in the front end above the top of the vessel. This box or blower is provided with a piston-rod and head similar to the ordinary blast-cylinder or blower, and is operated by means of an arm on the under side of the hopper-slide, which arm is connected with the end of the 'piston-rod, and, as the drawer is drawn out, air or blast is produced a fan, bellows, air-pump, orany other similar device, all of which I claim to have accomplished by means of the blowers, as above described.

Figure l is a sectional elevation of the device, showing the earth-hopper, drawer, and slide, and also the blower with vessel infront under the seat. Fig. 2 is a transverse sec tional view, showing the interior arrangement of the several devices.

. In the drawing, A is the case, all of which is made of wood or other suitable material, and may be made of any required size or of any ornamental design. B is the hopper, containing the dust or earth. C is the drawer and slide under the hopper, the bottom of which drawer is perforated with slot-holes orpartiall y covered with slatsso as to form a kind ot' grate. I) D are the arms, by means of which the drawer and blower are operated. E is the blower. H is the opening in front over the vessel. F is the arm oi' the drawer-slide, by which the blower is operated. G is the vessel under the seat. J is the dust or earth in the hopper.

Having thus fully described the drawings, I make no claim to the case or vessel, for I am aware that these are old 5 but What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i The air box or blower E, as above described, when used for earth-closets, in combination with the drawer C, arm F, and slide-arms l) l), by means of which it is operated, when arranged, constructed, and operated substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
