GASOLINE-TANK FILLER AN D INDICATOR.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, CARLTON H. DUN- rnn and ADAM L. SPENCE, both citizens of the United States, and both residing at lVrightstown, county of Burlington, State or' New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Gasoline-Tank Filler and Indicator, of which the followingis a specification.
Our invention consists of novel means adapted to ybe readily installed upon or attached to the gasoline tanks of automobiles of any conventional type, wherein said tank is located under the front seat, and wherein it is now necessary for the occupant to stand up and remove a seat cushion before the tank can be lled, means being provided for enabling the height of the gasoline level to be readily ascertained by a novel indicating device, and provision being made for enabling an attendant to readily refill the tank from the exterior of the automobile without disturbing the occupants of the seat above the tank or removing the seat cushions, below which the tank is located.
It further consists of a novel construction of indicating device and a novel construction of a closure for the outer endof the illing pipe.
With the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in a filling conduit 01:' novel construction and provided with a novel inlet portion having contents-indicating appliances arranged vso as to be observable at all times; and the invention consists also further in the novel and useful construction and parts and combinations and arrangements thereof, as hereinafter described and further defined in the appended claims.
For the purpose of illustrating our invention, we have shown in the accompanying drawings a form thereof which is at present preferred by us7 since it will give in. practice satisfactory and reliable results, although .it .is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawings,
1 designates a gasoline tank having in its top 2 a threaded bushing 3 of the usual type, said bushing being ordinarily closed by a suitable cap or plug, which is unscrewed when it is desired to fill the tank with gasoline. In carrying out our invention, we remove the cap and screw into said bushing the exteriorly threaded portion 4: of a short elbow or angular section of pipe or tubing 5, which is composed of the vertical section 6 and the horizontal section 7, the latter being in practice about four inches long and serving as a handle to screw the vertical section or member 6 into place in the bushing 3. The section 7 terminates in the slightly enlarged eXteriorly threaded head 8 against which abuts the enlarged exteriorly threaded head 9 of the section 10, which heads are secured in assembled position by the coupling 11, said coupling and heads being provided with right and left hand threads, so that as said coupling is turned, said heads will be brought into juxtaposition and a fluid tight joint will be formed as seen in Figure 2. The pipe 10 passes through the hole 12in the side 13 of the car and terminates in the upturned end 11i, having the iange 15 thereon.
16 designates a threaded pin or bolt screwed into said flange and passing through the cap or disk 17, which can be turned laterally upon said pin as an axis. The disk 1'4" has a hook 18 thereon diametrically opposite to the pin 16 which is engaged by the pin 19.; which has a wing nut 20, which, when tightened, Will clamp the disk 1 7 tightly into place.
21 designates a ring through which the pipe 10 passes which is employed to conceal the hole 12 and is fastened to the side 13 by screws or the like.
The float 22 is supported from the vertical portion of the flexible connection 23, which is attached to the bell Crank. 2i, from which leads the horizontal wire 25 to the connection 26, which is connected with the stem 27 of the indicator, which carries the pointer 28 which coacts with the dial 29, so that as the tioat rises and falls the pointer and dial will indicate the height of the `gasoline.
The seat cushion 30 is on the top of the tank l, and it will be understood that the filling pipe sections 7 and 10 lie closely against the top ot the tank, and afford no obstruction to the seat cushionsfitting thereagainst in the usual manner.
(')ur device in practiec is assembled by fi rst screwing the section 5 into place. The coupling lll is then secured on the head 8. The section l()v is next inserted through the hole Yl2 and screwed into the coupling, which is then tightened and the iinishing ring 2l is then secured in position.
lVhen it is desired to fill the tank the wing nut 2O is loosened and the closure 17 swung to one side `and aftery the tank is lilled said closure is turned into the position seen in Figures 3 and 4land the wing nut tightened. By our invention, the filling of the gasoline tank can be readily effected from the exterior of the car Without necessitating the occupants of the front seat arising or disturbing the front seat cushions, making our invention especially desirable in closed cars, as coupes and sedans, and the like.
It will be apparent that we have devised a novel and useful gasoline tank `filler and indicator, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while we have, iu the p resent instance, shown and described a preferred embodiment thereof which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that such embodiment is susceptible oit modiication in various parf ticulars without departing` irom the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any ol,E its advantages.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new. and desire to seein-e by Letters Patent, is

In a device oilE the character stated, an elbow having a vertical exterior-ly threaded section adapted to be screwed into the top of a gasoline tank, and al horizontal extension adapted to serve as a handle and having an eXteriorly threaded head, another pi pe section forming a continuity ot said hori*v zontal extension. and having an outer exw teriorly threaded head and terminating in an upturned filling opening located exteriorly of the car body, an interiorly threaded coupling engaging said threaded heads, the latter and said coupling having right and left-hand threads, and a closure `for said filling openinr.
2. In a device of the character stated, an elbow having a vertical eXteriorly threaded `section adapted to be screwed into the top and means for clamping said closure upon said .flange to make a tight joint.
3. In a device of the character stated, an elbow having a. vertical exteriorly threaded section adapted to be secured into the top oft' a gasoline tank and a. horizontal section adapted to serve as a handle, and having an exteriorly threaded head, another pipe section having an exterior-ly threaded head and an upturned lilling terminal, a coupling engaging said head, a flange on said terminal, a pin on said iange, a disk through which said pin passes, a hooked yrecess on said disk, a threaded pinon saidliange and engaging the walls of said recess, and a nut on said last-mentioned pin for clamping said disk in place.
