GASOLINE GAUGE.
Application filed November 27, 1922. Serial no. 603,431.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH P. Rema ns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Gasoline Gauges,
- of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a gasoline gauge of simple construction which can be manufactured at low cost and easily applied to automobiles and trucks, especially those having the gasoline tank under the seat, for indicating the amount of gasoline supply in the tank. a
A further object of the invention is to provide a gasoline gauge which can be readily and easily applied to Fords and other automobiles and trucks having the'gasoline tank under thefrontfseat, without involving any skilled labor. 1
In the accompanying drawing illustrating a selected embodiment of the invention- Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing my invention applied to a tank under the front seat.

Referring to the drawings 5 designates generally a support for the seat 6, and 7 is a tank suitably installed beneath the seat and provided with an opening 8 and a cap 9. For convenience and economy I use the same cap, with which the tank is equipped when it is originally installed, but I provide a collar 10 which is screwed into the opening 8 of the neck 8' of the tank in plac of the cap which is screwed intothe top of the collar. This collar becomes in effect part of the neck 8, and has an opening 11 in one side which is threaded to receive a tube 12 which extends forward and through the front 13 of the seat support. A rod 14 is arranged in the tube 12 and it is engaged with a stem 15 carrying a float 16 within the tank 7 Th stem 15 is preferably made of flat wire having its end 15 bent back upon itself to form a spring hook for engagement with an eye 14' formed on the inner end of the rod 14. The outer end of the rod 14 is bent downward to form an indicator 16 which is arranged to swing in an arc across the front 13 of the seat support. Suitable marks may be made on said front 13 or a plate 18 of metal or celluloid, or a paper sheet may be affixed to said front Y13 and marked suitably for indicating the quantity of gasoline in the tank. The collar is provided with a projection 17 which extends inwardly above the connection between the rod 14 and stem 15 and prevents their disengagement and also prevents damage thereto from the insertion of a hose nozzlethrough the collar 10 to fill the tank. My invention provides a simple device which comprises but very few parts and which can be made at low cost and applied to a gas tank already installed without 'involving the use of any special tools or skilled labor. All that is necessary to do to install my invention in a Ford or othercar having a gas tank under the seat is to make thehole 13 in the front 13 of the seat support. The
collar is screwed into the neck of the tankin I place of the usual cap 9 which is furnished with the tank, and the cap 9 is screwed into the collar, the latter constituting an elongation of the neck which is permissible in ordinary installations without engaging the seat 6. It will be readily understood that the invention can be easily applied in the manufacture of tanks or in installing tanks in automobiles or trucks; but to install the invention. in an automobile or truck now in use, it is only necessary to make the hole 13. Then the collar 10 is screwed into the neck of the tank and the rod 14 is pushed through the hole 13 and the opening 11 into the neck beyond the projection 17 It is a very simple operation to drop the float into the tank and engage the hook 15 with the eye 14', after which the rod 14 is pulled forward to bring the stem 15 under the projection 17 to the position shown in Fig. 1. The tube 12 is then inserted through opening 13 and screwed into the opening 11, after which the end 16 of the rod 14 is then bent downward to the indicator position shown in Figs. 1 and. 2. The projection serves to prevent the parts within the neck from being damaged by careless handling of the nozzle of the filling hose, and I also preferably make this projection with its end extending downward to prevent inward movement 0 the rod 14 lengthwise thereof before the end is turned down to form the indicator 16. A paper disk may be provided to be affixed to the front of the seat support and suitably thereover will indicate the amount of gasoline in the tank. The tube 12 is provided to form a bearing for the rod 14: which acts as a rock shaft, and also to protect the rod against injury.
Although my invention is simple in construction it may be found necessary to make changes therein to adapt the invention for use with different tanks, different automobiles or trucks and different installations I thereof, and for other reasons, and I-reserre the right to make all such changes as fairly fall. within the scope of the following claims:
I claim:
1. The combination of a liquid tank-hai 'ing an opening therein, a collar secured in said opening, said collar having an aperture in the side thereof, a cap for said collar, a tube secured in the aperture in the side-of said collar and extending laterally therefrom, a rod arranged in said tube, a stem connected to the inner end of said rod and projecting down in said tank and carrying a float on its lower end, a projection on the collar extending inwardly over the connect-ion between said rod and stem, and an indicator on the outer end of said rod.

The combination of a liquid tank having an opening therein, a collar secured in said opening, said collar having an aperture in the side thereof, a cap for said collar, a tube secured in the aperture in the side of said collar and extending laterally therefrom, a rod arranged in said tube and having its inner end projecting into the collar and provided with an eye, a stem having a hook at one end to engage said eye and carrying a float at its other end, and an inclicator on the outer end of said rod.
3. The combination of a liquid tank having an opening therein, a collar secured in said opening, said collar having an aperture in the side thereof, a cap for said collar, a tube secured in the aperture in the side of said collar and extending laterally therefrom, a rod arranged in said tube and having its inner end projecting into the collar and provided with an eye, a stem having a hook at its upper end for connection to said eye and carrying a float at its lower end, a projection on the collar extending over the connection between the rod and the stem to protect the same, and an indicator at the outer end of the rod.
4. The combination of a tank having a neck, a tube secured in an aperture in the side of said neck and extending therefrom, a
rod in said tube, a stem connected to the in-' connection between said rod and stern, and
an indicator on the outer end of said rod.
