TES
JOHN K. SEYMOUR,
OF ELYRIA, OHIO.
GARMEN T SUPPORTER AND FASTENER.
Application filed August 2, 1920. Serial No. 430,682.
T 0 all w 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN K. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment Supporters and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
.This invention relates to garment supporters and is particularly adapted to garters.
In prior types of garters it .has been customary to have a band portion adapted to be passed around the leg of the wearer and over this band portion to have depending hangers or strips, one of which is adapted to be passed under the sock and the other adapted to be placed over the sock. There is usually a headed stud on the member underneath anda slotted clip onthe mem her outside. Since the headed stud cannot enter through the lower part, of the slot in the clip, it is necessary to pass a finger underneath the sock and hanger and stretch passes through the enlargement in theslot. To do this, the inelastic strip is held clown to the full extent and the inside hanger is buckled. Then the clip is passed over the stud and the strip pulled up until the bottom of the slot. On withdrawing the fingers from beneath the sock, the sock stretches down again and it, therefore, is not maintained in tight-fitting and stretched position.
It is an object of my invention to overcome this disadvantage, and my invention includes certain connections whereby the sock or other garment may be pulled up the full extent until all wrinkles and folds are removed, and then an inverted U-shaped clip which is fastened to the end of the outside strip is pushed downwardly so as to inclose the neck of the headed stud underneath the garment. Both hangers are preferably made of inelastic material, and it is an object of my invention to make both of the same strip of material which preferably passes up over the supporting band and is stitched thereto. f
A fuller understanding will be had of my invention from the following description,
reference being had to the drawing in which stud passes down to the an embodiment of my invention is illustrated, and which is a view of a garter having my improvements.
Referring to the drawing, the garter consistsor" a band 1 adapted to pass around the leg of the wearer, and in the position of the usual pad portion, I pass a non-elastic strip 2 over the band so as to leave free depending strips on either side, such as what I will term an inside strip 3 and an outside strip i. The strip of material 2, which is preferably non-elastic is stitched at 5 to the band and takes the place of the usual pad. This enables me to produce such a garter at less than the usual cost.
On the lower end of the inside strip 3 is affixed a stud 6, and on the lower end of the strip lis affixed an inverted ill-shaped clip 7, the portion 8 of this U-shaped clip being adapted to be positioned to embrace the neck 9 of the stud 6, and to hold therebetween a portion of the sock or other garment so as to support the same.
In practice, the band 1 is first positioned about the leg; of the wearer, and the strip 3 takes its natural position depending from the band 1, and the sock is pulled up over the strip 8 and straightened out in such position; the U-shaped member 7 is then manipulated to embrace the neck 9 of the stud 6, and also an intervening portion of the sock of the wearer to securely clamp this portion between the two elements 6 and 7, so that the sock may be supported by the strip 3 alone and the band 1.
In the embodiment illustrated, the strip 4 performs no function of supporting the sock. being merely to secure the clip 7 to the band. For facilitating the placing of the U-shaped member 7 in operative position, an abutment 10 is provided upon which .ownward pressure may be exerted by the finger in order to force the member 7 over the stud neck 9.
My invention, therefore, comprises two phases. First, that phase which permits me to use a single strip of material in a single piece to form the two depending strips and the pad on the band, and in the second phase an improved fastening means to secure the garter to the sock.
I am aware that the embodiment of my invention herein illustrated may be departed from, and such departures may yet be within the spirit of my invention, so I do not wish to be limited to the embodiment herein illus- 'ti'ated but only by the scope of the appended.
laim:
I claim:
In a garter. the combination with a leg' enciiclinp; hand" oil a single strip oi nonelastic material, adapted to pass over and to he rigidly secured on eilhei side to the said hand to form a pad. said strip having a pair of freely depending i'ion-elastic portions both of considerable length, coinarisingan inside and an outside strip po1.' tion and fastening means secured to the ends of the said strip portions and adapted to clamp thei'ebetween a portion of the sock oi the wearer, both said non-elastic portions being: capable of maintaining a considerable length of stocking therebetween, Without folding): 01? the stocking and both of said eoopeiating' fastening means being normally disposed at the same distance from the supporting band.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name this 29th day of July, 1920.
v JOHN K. SEYMOUR.
