STATES WINIFRED F. EDWARDS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
COMBINED BOOKMAB-KER AND LEAF HOLDER.
Application filed May 9, 1921. Serial No. 468,135.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVI vIrRED FRANCES EDwARns, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Munster Lodge, Fulham Road, London, S. WV., 6, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Bookmarkers and Leaf Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to leaf holders and markers for books and the like and has for its object to provide an improved combined leaf holder and marker which may be combined with a stand, or support for a book or the like.
The combined leaf holder and marker constructed in accordance with this invention comprises a post member, provided with a clip for engagement with the back of the binding of the book or the like, and carrying two pivoted leaf holders for holding the book open at the requisite opening, the leaf-holders being capable of being closed in the leaves of the book to act as a book marker.
A strut may be hinged to the end of the clip carrying member to act as a stand or support for the book.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention Fig. 1 represents an elevation of one form of combined leaf holder and marker constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view showing the device attached to a book.
Fig. 3 represents an elevation of an al ternative construction.
Referring to these drawings, the device comprises a post member a which is in the form of a rod or tube carrying a spring clip I); the device is placed on the back we of the binding, approximately at the centre thereof, with the member a on the outside and the clip Z) on the inside.
Two arms 0, (Z are pivoted on the end of the member a and are secured by a screw 7 with sufiicient friction to prevent them from being moved by the pressure of the leaves of the book upon them; alternatively the arms may be riieted to the member (4. These arms have fingers 0 d which engage the tops of the leaves, and one is slightly longer than the other so that they can be folded flat.
To the lower end of the member a a strut or leg 9 is pivoted, either by means of a spiral spring coupling it which engages reduced ends of the member a and leg 9 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or by means of a hinge as shown in Fig. 3. This strut may be detachable. v
By bending the strut g at the requisite angle, the whole device acts as a stand in the manner indicated in Fig. 2.
lnthe modified construction shown in Fig. 3 the strut or leg 9 is provided at its lower end with two hinged portions Z, 7:: which can be opened out to form a foot.
It will of course be understood that the spring hinge may be replaced by an equivalent construction such as a Hookes or ball joint.
Instead of forming the arms 0, (Z in the form shown they may be pivotally mounted upon a vertical rod or wire projecting with the book opening and connected by a U bend with the member a and may be urged apart by springs.
I claim:-
1.. In a combined book marker and leaf holder, the combination of a post member, a clip for engagement with the back of the binding, a reduced neck at the top of said post, two leaf holders pivoted on said neck and a screw for tightening said holders on said neck. 7'
2. In a combined book marker and leaf holder, a post, a clip mounted on said post and opening downward relative thereto, and leaf holders mounted in superimposed relation on one end of the post and capable of free rotative movement in a plane at right angles to the axis of the post, and a member threaded in said post and adapted to engage and hold said leaf holders in desired relativepositions.
3. In a combined book marker and leaf holder, a post, a clip mounted on said post and opening downward relative thereto, and leaf holders mounted in superimposed rela tion on one end of the post and capable of free rotative movement in a plane at right angles to the axis of the post, a member threaded in said post and adapted to engage and hold said leaf holders in desired relative positions, and a supporting leg movably connected to the lower end of the post.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WTNIFRED F. EDWARDS.
