STEPHAN KOBZY, OF EAST PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOOK-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, STEPHAN KoBzY, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to book holders, and the objects of my invention are to provide a book holder that can be advantageously used by invalids for supporting books in a position whereby they can be easily read without fatiguing the invalid, and to provide a book holder that can be easily adjusted to support a.book at a desired elevation and to permit of the pages or leaves of the book being easily shifted when read.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a reading stand or book holder having novel adjustments for the proper positioning of a book or the matter to be read, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
WVith these and such other objects in View as may hereinafter appear, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the book holder, Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion of the same, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of the book holder, Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of one of the clamps thereof, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of a stand forming part of the book holder.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a vertical post having the lower end thereof mounted in a socket 2 having radially disposed short legs 3 and a long leg 4, said post and the socket thereof constituting a stand.
5 denotes a clamp adjustably mounted upon the post 1, said clamp having the arms 6 thereof held by a screw 7. The screw 7 is provided with a large head 8 having an opening 9 and adjustably mounted in said opening is a rod 10 adapted to be fixed in said opening by a set screw 11 adjustably Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 3, 1911.
Serial No. 612,015.
mounted in the head 8 of the screw 7. The
rod 10 is arranged at right angles to the post 1 and is adapted to extend outwardly above the long leg 4 of the stand.
12 denotes a clamp adjustably mounted upon the rod 10, said clamp having the arms 13 thereof held by a set screw 14:. The clamp 12 is provided with additional arms 15 and these arms engage and adjustably support an upright 16, said arms being connected by a set screw 17.
18 denotes hinge members having the upper and lower ends 19 and 20 thereof pivotally mounted upon the upright 16 and these members support hook rests 21 having the lower ends thereof provided with ledges 22. A washer 23 is interposed between the ends 20 and the clamp 12, and a nut 24 is screwed upon the upper end of the upright 16 to prevent the members 18 from becoming accidentally displaced.
18 denotes a coiled spring encircling the upright 16, said spring having one end thereof connected to one of the members 18 and the other end thereof to the other member 18, and this spring is adapted to normally maintain the members in an open position.
25 denotes an arm adjustably mounted in the lower end of the upright 16 and adapted to be fixed relatively to said upright by a set screw 26. The forward end of the arm 25 is provided with a bifurcated head 27 and pivotally mounted in the bifurcation of said head by a pin 28 is a lever 29 having the lower end thereof bent forwardly to provide a handle 30. The lever 29 is normally maintained in a vertical position by a spring 29 coiled around the pin 28 and having one end connected to the lever 29 and the opposite end thereof to the arm 25. In the upper end of the lever,,29 is mounted a vertical pin 31 and pivotally mounted upon said pin are the barrels 32 of page holders 33. The holder 33 is provided with a bracket 34 and adjustably mounted in this bracket is a set screw 35 having the inner end thereof loosely connected to a cross head 36. The ends of'the cross head are pivotally connected, as at 37 to links 38 having the ends thereof pivotally connected, as at 39 to the outer sides of the holders 33. The clamp 5 permits of the rod 10 being raised or lowered upon the post 1, and the set screw 11 permits of the rod 10 being adjusted in the head 8. The set screw 14 permits of the clamp 12 being shifted Patented May 16, 1911..
