UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EL A M. I-IYNDS, or KANSAS CITY, ivrrssormr."
BooK 0R COPY HOLDER.
State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book or Copy Holders, of which the following is a complete specification.
The present invention relates to book or copy holding devices, and aims to provide an improved construction of this character adapted to support books or copies in any desired position suited to the requirements of the person making use of the same.
Accordingly I have devised a novel construction which comprises a horizontal extensible supporting arm or structure including an upright spindle for carrying said arm and allowing the same to be swung about a vertical axis, together with a copy supporting member having a similar adjusting movement with, reference to said supporting arm.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an improved type of adjustable connection between the parts of the construction, in the form of spindles and removable sleeve bearings affording the re quired swinging movement and also permitting the ready and convenient mounting of the sleeves upon the spindles or removal of the same therefrom when desired.
The invention further comprises a simple form of adjustable connection between the copy supporting member and one of said sleeve bearings whereby the said copy supporting member may be readily tilted to any desired angle with reference to said bearing.
It is also sought to provide a simple, neat and compact construction which is convenient in its various adjustments and also in-' expensive to manufacture.
With these general objects in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating certain practical forms of construction for embodying the proposed improvements, after which the novel features thereof will be set forth in the appended claim. 7
In the drawing Figure 1 is a sectional slde elevation showing a copy'holding construction embodying the present features of improvement; Fig. 2 is a plan View of thesame;
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented gt, 26 1920.
Application filed March 20, 1919. Serial No. 283,889. I I
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail view taken on the line 33 of Fig. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a modified form. of base for supporting the structure from the floor.
Referring to the drawing in detail, this shows the improved construction, in Figs;
1 and 2, as including a floor stand made up of adjustable upright sections comprising a -tubula-r section 10 and a rod section 12' fitting slidingly within the section 10 and adapted to be secured in any position therein by means of a clamping screw 14., The lower end of the section 10 is provided with a weight or'floor rest member 16 whereby the holder structure is maintained in upright position. The upper end 'of the rod section 12 is formed with a reduced spindle portion 18, upon which is reinovably fitted a sleeve bearing 2O formedwith a lateral horizontal extensible arm which, in the constructionillustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, comrying a bolt 36 and a clamping nut 38, this lug 34 is embraced between similarly perforated lugs or ears 40 (see Fig. 3,) on the rear face of the copy supporting member 42, whereby the latter may be adjusted about the horizontal axis of said bolt and clamped in any desired position. The copy supporting member 42 is formed with a lower marginal copy supporting flange 44, and also provided with a transverse retain- 1 web extension 22 attached to one end of a p ing bar 46 formed with a shank portion 48 I fitted with a nut 50 and spring 52 whereby said bar is yieldingly actuated toward the face of the member 42. In Fig. 4 is merely illustrated a modified form of floor rest or support, dispensing with the weight 16 of Figs. 1 and 2, and i using a floor bracket comprising the radial arms 62 provided with openings-64, whereby the structure may be secured by suitable fastenings (not shown) to the fioor.
It is thus apparent that a neat and comparatively simple supporting structure is provided for carrying out the desired ob- Where supported jects of the invention. from the floor, the height is readily adjustable by means of the telescoping sections 10 and 12. The position of the copy is further adjusted about either of the two upright spindles 18 and 30 and also about the horizontal axis of the bolt 36, Where this bolt'is provided as a part of the device; and in all casesthe horizontal distance r from the axis of the spindle 18 may be variedrbythe extensible character of the horizontal supporting arm. The provision ofajcopy supporting device of this character, besides enabling all the desired adjustments of the position ofthe copy to be obtained, also affords a means for supporting the copy from thefloor, and hence resultingjin'a-more stable structure than'thatobtain'ed by attaching a copy holder to the 2 5 table or to j the typewriting machine of a copyist, because in such cases the ar of the table or themachine is of course transmittedto" the copy; the present improved ar rangement enables the copy to be presented in any position either at the side or above ble lazy tongs device provided atone of its ends with a sleeve bearing rotatably' and removably mounted upon said spindle and thereby pivoting said device about a vertical axis, an approximately V-shaped member one side of which is connected to the outermost end of said supporting structure and the other side of which forms an upright spindle, and a copy supporting member pro 7 vided with a sleeve bearing removably and rotatably mounted: upon the spindle of said V-shaped member thereby pivoting said copy supporting member about a vertical axis with reference to said lazy tongs device, said copy supporting member being pivotally connected to said last mentioned sleeve bearing permitting adjustment of said copy supporting member about a horizontal axis.
In witness whereof I hereto affix my sig nature.
