J. s. MANCHESTER COMBINED ADJUSTABLE READING DESK AND LAMP Filed F65. 4, 1924 fav' Patented May 19, 1925.
- UNITED STATES JOHN S. MANCHESTER, F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED .ADJUSTABLE READING DESK AND LAMP.
Application med February 4, 1924. serial No. 690,637;
To all 'u2/20m t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. MANCHESTER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Adjustable Reading Desks and Lamps, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
,My invention relates to improvements in combined adjustable reading desk and lamp and has for its primary object a combined reading desk and lamp which can be adjusted up and down vertically and which also can be revolved so that books on both sides of the desk can be read without the reader changing his position.
A further object is to construct an adjustable reading desk and lamp in which the desk is adapted to hold reference books in open position for reading, and in which the lamp stand has an attachment by which a third book can be held. This makes my device especially applicable for students who receive a pamphlet at regular periods to further their studies and which pamphlet refers to several reference books because by my construction the pamphlet can be heldin reading position and the reference books readily referred to by merely turning around the desk so that the student will not have to change his vposition and will always have the pamphlet before him and one of the reference lbooks.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my device;
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same;
Fig. 3 is a fragmental view of the pamphlet holder showing one of the spring clamps for holding the pamphlet in open position; j
Fig. 4 is a bottom lan view of the swivel sleeve employed; andp Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same.
In the construction of my deviceI employ a base 6 which is preferably of heavy material so as to give stability to the desk. Secured within the base 6 is a tubular member 7 which is preferably provided adjacent its upper end with a projecing pin 8. Located on the upper end of the member 7 is a swivel sleeve 9 which is provided with concentric bores 10 and 11 and with a thumb screw 12. The lower portion of the sleeve 9 is partly cut away so as to form shoulders 13, which shoulders are adapted tocontact with the pin 8 so as to limit the rotation of the sleeve 9, the sleeve being otherwise free to turn on the tube 7. j
Passing through the bore 11 of the sleeve 9 is a tubular member 14 which has secured to its upper end a flange 15. is secured to the base or bottom 16 of the desk, the base 16 is provided with side walls and with a top 17. Thetop 17 is provided with grooves 18 which are adapted to hold pencils and the like. It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the top 17 is narrower than the bottom 16 so that the book supports 19 which are hingedly secured to the top 18 by means of hinges 20 will rest in an inclined position. The book supports 19 are provided adjacent their lower edge with a ledge 21 to prevent therbooks from sliding from the support. The supports also act as lids so that access can be had to the interior of the desk in which the various books, when not in use, may be placed. l Extending through the desk is a tube 22, its lower end projecting into the tube or pipe 14, while its upper end carries a lamp or an electric fixture 23. i
Placed on the top 17 of the desk and surrounding the tube 22 is a base 24 on which rests a sleeve 25. The sleeve 25 is free to turn on the tube 22 and carries an extension 26 on which a book support 27 is secured. livotally attached tothe book support 27 and preferably at eac-h side thereof is a spring clamp 28, thc purpose of these clamps is to hold a thin book or pamphlet open on the support 27.
The tube 7 is provided adjacent the base 6 with an opening 29 through which electric conductors 30 extend. These conductors project upwardly and are attachedto the light 23 when electricity is used. Of course 1t is possible to use other lighting means than electricity, the lighting means however, being controlled by the locality in which the device is to be used.
My purpose of employing the pin 8 and thus limiting the rotation of the desk is to prevent the twisting olf of the electric conductors, although I may if desired, use some sort of commercial swivelelectric connection and eliminate the in 8 entirely.
The desk may be a justed up and down by loosening the thumb screw 12 thus per- The flange 15 mitting adjustment of the tube 14 up and down in the sleeve 9. lIn this manner adjustmentfcan be secured and at the same time thedesk permitted to revolve or be swiveled freely.
It is understood of course, that the desk can be made of any suitable material such as wood or metal Without departing from the spirit of my inventionf Having fully describedmy invention, what I claim is 1. A combined reading desk and lamp comprising a base, a tubular member carried thereby, a reading desk capable of being vertically adjusted rotatably carried by said standard and having inclined book supports, a lamp carried by said desk, and a book support carried by said lamp and rotatable independently of the rotation of the desk.
2. A combined reading desk and lamp comprising a desk having a bottom, two sides and a top, inclined book supports hingedly carried by said desk whereby access to the interior of thedesk can be had, a lamp carried by the top of said desk, a book support rotatably carried by said lamp, a standard provided with a base, and means carried by' thev desk whereby the same can be adjustably and rotatably carried by the standard.
3. A combined reading desk and lamp comprising a desk havin a bottom, two sides and a top, incline book su ports hingedly carried by said desk where y access to the interior of the desk can be had, a lamp carried by the top of said desk, a book support rotatably carried by said lamp, a standard provided with a base, means oarried by the desk whereby the same can be adjustably and' rotatably carried by the standard, and means for limiting the rotation of said desk.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this s ecication.
J HN S. MANCHESTER.
