OIL CAN.

Be it known that I, WILLIs A. CHAsE, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Concord, inthe county of Essex and State of Vermont, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in receptacles for holding dispensing oils or other liquids and has for an object the provision of means whereby the liquid will be prevented from accidently passing out of the discharge spout of the receptacle, thus eliminating waste.
Another object is the provision of means whereby the means for preventing the es cape of the oil or liquid, may be operated so as to discharge the oil in just the amount desired, so that in addition to economy of use, superfluous oil will be prevented-from running over the article lubricated.
Another object is the provision of means for forcing the oil out through the discharge spout when the latter is open and thus insuring a positive discharge of oil irrespective of its character or temperature.
A further object is the provision of means for screening the oil before it passes through the discharge spout, to prevent extraneous matter from being fed to the machinery or other article with the lubricant.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation an. oil can embodying the present invention.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a receptacle which is adapted to form the fount or reservoir of an oil can. This receptacle is preferably provided with a dome shaped top 11 having a central opening which is surrounded by an interiorly threaded flange 12. The top 11 is also provided with a flanged filling opening 13 which is normally closed by a screw cap 14.-.
The opening which is surrounded by the flange 12 is normally closed by an exteriorly threaded flanged cap 16, which carries a discharge spout 17.
Carried by the cap 16 is a cylinder 18 which is open at its lower end and has its upper closed end 19 provided with a plurality of openings 20, which are preferably four in number. Surrounding the openings 20 and secured to the top 19 are tubular members 21. the latter being also secured to the cap 16 around openings 22 provided in the cap. The closed end 19 of the cylinder 18 is thus carried by and spaced from said cap. Threadedly or otherwise secured to the upper end of the cylinder 18 is a screen 23, the latter being also secured to the cap 16 so as to bridge the space between the cap and cylinder.
Mounted for movement within the cylinder 18 is a plunger 24, which is preferably formed of a pair of disks having a packing 25 clamped between themv plunger upon diametrically opposite sides of the center are rods 26, which rods are also secured to the opposite ends of an op erating member 27 which is formed of upper and lower plates 28 and 29 respectively, each of which is provided with a central opening 30 to take over the discharge spout 17, so that this operating member is capable of longitudinal movement on the spout. The rods 26 which serve to connect the operating member and the plunger 24 operate through two of the tubular members 21 which form guides for the rods. The plate 28 is centrally ofiset so as to space that por- Secured to this tion. of the plate from the plate 29 and located within this space is a disk 31 whose edges extend beyond the side edges of the plates. The disk 31 is provided with a central opening and with. oppositely located notches 32, which are adapted to receive beads 33, the latter being positioned upon diametrically opposite sides of the spout 17 and extending from the lower or inner end of the spout for an appreciable distance outward. The plunger may thus be raised into juxtaposition to the upper end of the cylinder 18 and held in such position. by giving the disk 31 a quarter turn after the notches 32 leave the bead 33. The plunger 24 is forced downward to the lower end of the cylinder 18 by means of a spring 34 which is positioned between the plunger and the upper end of the cylinder. By releasing the operating member 27, the plunger may be forced downward, whereupon, oil or other fluid within the receptacle 10 will be forced upward through the screen 23 and outward through the discharge spout 17.
The upper end of the spout 17 is provided with a discharge nozzle 35 which is threaded or otherwise secured upon the end of the spout and this nozzle carries a seat 36 for a valve 87. The valve has secured thereto one end of a stem 38 which extends downward through the spout 17 and which terminates in a substantially parallel extension 39 which projects upward through an opening in the cap 16. The extremity of this extension has secured thereon a finger piece 10. The extension 39 is also surrounded by a spring ll which bears against the cap 16 and acts to force the valve 37 upon its seat. In order to open the valve it is only necessary to press downward upon the finger piece against the action of the spring and when pressure upon the finger piece is released the valve will be automatically seated, This permits the amount of oil or fluid discharged from the nozzle 35 to be accurately controlled.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. The combination with a receptacle having a discharge spout, of spring actuated means located within the receptacle for forcing the contents of the latter through said discharge spout, means movable longitudinally of the discharge spout for operating the spring actuating means and means carried by the said operating means for holding the spring actuated means against movement.
2. The combination with a receptacle having a discharge spout, of spring act-u ated means located within the receptacle for forcing the contents thereof through the discharge spout, means movable longitudinally of the discharge spout for operating the spring actuated means and means carried by the said operating means and engageable with the spout for holding the spring actuated means against movement.
3. The combination with a receptacle having a discharge spout, of spring actuated means located within the receptacle for forcing the contents of the latter therethrough, means movable longitudinally of the discharge spout for operating the spring actuated means and rotatable means carried by said operating means and engageable with the spout for holding the spring actuated means against movement.
l. The combination with a receptacle having a discharge spout, of a plunger located within the receptacle for forcing the contents thereof through the discharge spout, means movable longitudinally of the discharge spout for operating the plunger and connecting rods movable through guides in the top of the receptacle and having one of their ends connected to the plunger and their opposite ends connected to the plunger operating means.
