Description

' July 3, 1923'. 1,46Q386 H. LEWINSON SELF FILLING PEN Filed April 13, 1922 Patented July 3, i923.
SELF-FILLING]- PEN.
Application filed April 13, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HYMAN LEWINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Filling Pens, of which the following is a specification.
This pen is designed to provide means within the pen itself for conveniently filling the pen. It is desirable that such means seal the pen against any leakage and be so formed as topreclude the chance of being expelled so as to soil the hands of the operator as the pen is being filled.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Fig. 1 shows a central section through the pen with the parts in one of the positions assumed in filling.
Fig. 2 a similar view with the parts in another position assumed during the filling operation.
Fig. 3 a side elevation of the plunger.
1 marks the en barrel, 2 a closure at the lower end of t e pen carrying the feeding member 3 in which a pen 4 is mounted.
A plunger 5 has a central opening 6 through it and a surrounding valve seat 7 on its upper face. It is provided with a packing ring 8 which makes a closure with the walls of the barrel and also exerts slight friction with the walls of the barrel. 7
A valve stem 9 extends through the opening 6 and has a stoppin 10 below the plunger 5 and is adapted to engage the plunger, A
Valve 11 is formed on the stem above the. plunger and is adapted to make a closure with the seat 7. The stem-9 extends through a closure 12 at the top of the pen. A handle 13 is screwed to the upper end of the stem. It has a screw-threaded end 14 adapted to screw into threads 15 at the upper end of the barrel. Gaskets 16 are arranged below the screwthreads 15 and are compressed as the handle 13 is screwed into place at the completion of'the filling movement. The plunger is provided with a cam 5. When Serial No. 552,236.
the handle 14 is screwed into the barrel the pin 10 engages the cam 5 and moves the plunger axially sufiiciently to open the valve The filling operation is as follows: The operator first unscrews the handle. This moves the pin 10 oil the cam 5*. He then withdraws the plunger 5 and then returns it. On the return the valve 11 seats on the stem 7 and the downward movement of the plunger creates a vacuum. The pen is then dipped into ink and the handle screwed into place. This opens the valve 11 and the ink flows into the barrel, the valve 11 remaining in open position so that the ink may flow out. 5
What I claim as new is 1. In a self-filling pen, the combination of a barrel; a plunger in the barrel; a valve acting on the plunger; a stem extending from the valve towithout the plunger; and means co-acting with the stem for moving the valve to open position through either rotative or axial movement of the stem rel- 1 atively to the plunger.
2. In a self-filling pen, the combination of a barrel; a plunger in the barrel having a passage therethrough and a valve seat thereon; a valve operating on the seat and opening and closing by a movement toward and from the seat; a stem leading from the valve to without the barrel; and devices for opening the valve on a rotative movement of 5 the stem relatively to the plunger.
3. In a self-filling pen, the combination of a barrel; a plunger in the barrel having a passage therethrough and a valve seat thereon facing outwardly; a valve operating on set my hand.
