BEANS FOR OPERATING VALVES OR COCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1907.
Application filed May 18, 1907- Serial No. 374.498.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MCCAR- ROLL. a. citizen of the United States. and aresident of the city and county of Philadelphia. State of Pennsylvania. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Operating Valves or Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in 4 means for hydraulically operating valves or carrying a detent 0 adapted to engage with cocks and more particularly to improve-l ments in the means for this purpose described and illustrated by me in application for Lnlted States Patent filed in the Patent i l l i I i Ofhce on August 17, 1906, Serial Number;
330,953, and allowed December 11, 1906.
In my invention above referred to, which was designed principally with a view to draining the condensed steam from the cylinders of locomotives, I made use of acylinder containing a. suitable liquid which liquid was,
by means of a piston and convenient means for operating the same, driven anddrawn i through tubes to cylinders carrying means for operating drain cocks connected in a suitable manner to the locomotive cylinders.
The means for operating the drain cocks or a notched segment d in a usual and well known manner. To the lower endofthe lever a is pivotally secured one end of a rod 0 the other end of which is secured to a piston f carried in a cylinder 9. This part of my device is precisely similar to a like part described in my former application.
To the forward-end of the cylinder 9 is connected a pipe h which leads to one end of a cylinder 2' which carries a piston fitted with a cup washer 7c and suitable rings Z of the usual construction.
in is a partition. carried by bridges -n which are carried bythe head propero of the cylinder i. which closes off the cylinder above the piston p is a steam pipe or nipple adapted to be secured to the cylinder to be drained in awell known manner.
r is a union by means of which the nipple p is removably connected to the cylinder 2'.
s is a valve, within nipple p,- which is seated at t and furnished with a stem 11" which passes through partition '02 and which is adapted to be engaged a projection v: on
I the upper end of piston 7.
valves consisted of a piston. traveling atf right angles to the axis of these valves ori side of the cylinder below partition m.
drain cocks not only the friction between the E stems ofthe drain cock valves and the cam like ends of the operating piston had to be i overcome but also more or less power was consumed in compressing the springs engag- These faults, while not 1 ing these pistons.
so serious as to make the invention valueless, j are more or less serious and the present invention is designed to obviate them.
In the drawing which accompanies this, a diagrammatic view of my present invention is shown.
a is an operating lever pivoted at b and 'w is a drain hole in the side of the cylinder 1' above partition m. a: a drain hole in the y is a s )ider or stop in the nipple 1) above the top 0 the valve 8.
The cylinder 9, the pipe 71, and all connections leading therefrom to the bottom of cyl inder i are filled with a liquid, with a nonfreezing liquid or oil if the apparatus is to be used in a cold climate. If it be desired to open the valve 8 to )ermitthe escape of any liquid that may collect in pipe or nipple p, the lever a is operated so as to cause the rod e to advance the piston f in cylinder g, this causes the liquid in this cylinder and in the pipe h to be forced into the cylinder i under the cup washer k of the piston j and this causes this latter piston to rise and to en- To facilitate and insure the complete draining of the cylinder i above the partition m the to and the rain hole w is on a line therewith.
The drain hole 0; below the partition m affords escape for any liquid that may past the valve stem 11 or past the piston j.
In the apparatus above described springs have been completely eliminated and friction has been reduced by placing the piston j and the valve 5 in axial alinement.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a valve operating means, in combination, a valve, a stem carried by or engaging said valve, a cylinder divided into two parts by a partition through which said stem passes furnished above and below said partition with perforations, a piston in the lower comartment of said cylinder having a movement in the direction of movement of said valve, a liquid carrying pipe one end of which communicates with said cylinder beneath i said drau
lpiston and the other end with a hyic cylinder, said latter cylinder, a piston of this partition is made convex i leak outlet in its side, a partition in said cylinder I the sides of said cylinder being 5 l in said latter cylinder, and means for operate ing said piston.
2. In a valve operating means, in combination, a valve, a stem or rod carried by or i engaging said valve, a cylinder having an I beneath said outlet through which partition 5 saidstem or rod asses, a piston in said cyli inder beneath said partition, a liquid carry- 5 ing pipe one end of which communicates with said cylinder beneath said piston and the other end with a hydraulic cylinder, said latter cylinder, a piston in said latter cylinder, and means for operating said piston.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a cylinder having 3 two outlets in its side, a partition across said cylinder between said outlets, a valve above said partition, a valve stem passing through Q said partition, a piston below said partition, and means for introducing and withdrawing 1 a liquid to or from said cylinder beneath said piston.
