WERE TIE AND SEAL MAKING- AND APPLYING T0011.
Application filed December 20, 1920. ileriel Ho. *tfiflfiil.
To all whom it may concern: us would one who desired to am Be it known thiit ll, Annnninn M. Burns, a Ordinary lend seal. t per is 1th the 50 citizen of the United States, residing at My invention is illustrated more or less Chicago, in the county of .Cook and State of diagrammatically in the accompanying e Illinois, have invented a certain new and drawings wherein:
useful improvement in Wire Tie and Seal v Figure 1 is aview of a package with the 60 Making and Applying Tools, of which the ie and Seal about to be applied; f ll i ifi ti Figure 2 is a view showing the tie twisted My invention relates to improvements in ut before the ends are broken ofi" t k to tools for melting seals for packages, doors, he seal;

it which is, itself, the seal, being formed of Like parts are indicated by like characters en integrel piece of wire withoutnny uddir ugh he drawings. I0
' tiogml apparatus or mechanism forming a A is a cylindrical handle, knurled and cor- I art -5 th A th bj t i t ru uted as at A t6 furnish a satisfactory id & bi 1 l d ti whigh cannot grip to the operator. At the further end of 24) be untied or unsealed Without bein i the handle is a nut A having it spiral engagt d or t, l tv ith t bei so di t rb d mg device of some kind not here shown It or dismrtgd canngt again b9 used as; since it forms 110179113 Of 1113 lilVl-Bntlull.
a 5:35,} my a fig I have discovered that when 811d IOttltiflllly W ltlllil the, llilIlLllB lS ll'l u piece of metallic wire is Wrapped about 591ml A3 g g g the mil the g en object or passed through an aperture t merit being such that when the spiral is be sealed end the two ends are twisted tod awn, it is moved by its engagement with to th r til th b k il t i t rethenut to rotate. A is o twisting head on moved f th b dy f th ti it th r by the end of the spiral; it is provided with it gg'gajjeg a, seal which takes the fopm'of the fOl'Wil-XCl wall A SlUtiiiKl ill; A. itlkl behind M tightly twisted tie ends and l have discovhis Well is a pocket A ered that when suliicient twisting and tent B is a package or in this case bag, which an sion is applied to ause the ends of the Wire 1S t0 be tied 0i sealed. '8' is a Wire tie having t b fi' b d th t i t d l rti n, at its two ends the upset ends or heads ll". that pert of the wire which forms the twist- The ends of the tie pass down in through the ed senling end being, stretched d heated slot A", the heads being in the pocket A clear up to the elastic limit, can never again and resting within the back side of the well so he untwisted without breaking or without Al. The loop of the tie is passed around the taking on a permanent distortion and thus neck. of the bag. The 'peretor then holds can never be twisted together again so as to the bag, and pulling on the handle exerts n simulate the .nppeorenee of the originally tension by causing the spiral to puss out twisted or formed seal. from the handle and rotute. This rotation on When a Wire is used, it is of course, imcauses the two ends of the tie to he twisted possible to have any member or object which together as ,hown in Figure 2. At some curries any number or mark and it might-- oint during this rotation the tie muterielly fi seem to be possible to easily reproduce the 1s twisted beyond its elastic limit and twistcherecteristic seal. This is, however, not ed oil' as shown in Figure 3, leuvingthe tie ce the fact because the seal can be made of e or seal twisted around the neck of the bug or particular color, shape or character of wire around the puckege with the menu end and arrangements can be made to protect or of the tie stressed, vperhaps even beyond its 1W limit the manufacture or sole-of such pen elastic limit. Both ends of the tie are broken v ticuler shape, type or color so that any one ed at at certain point, which experiments 105 wltio desired; to tum or with the seal would show, is always at the tool end not at the have as much dificu ty getting such wire and handle.
getting such metering as will melee the seel, G is a plunger hevihg t hood (3' adapted $0 slide in the slot A.
C is o sprin surroundm the plunger lending norms 15- to hold it in the osition shown in Figures 1 and 3. When i: e plunger is forced upward, as for instance by striking it on a ri id structure the heed 'C' uioves up through the slot and ejects she broken on ends of t e tie.
The use and operstion of my invention are as follows:
The operator who is going so apply the lie or combined tie and soul, first takes the seal forming wire, passes the bright lhereof around the open mouth of the neg or srouncl a package or through the look or hesp of e look as the case may be. He then takes hold of the two ends of the wire by a hook pass ing through the loops or by e slotted lwisling heed engaging the-two upset ends and he then either by using a helical or spirel twisting tool or by twisling the wire by bond, es the case may be, twists .llie free ends of bhe wire together so the-g the tie exerts e eeneion on the member about which it is peseed end so that the spiral or twisied ends suiteble dislunce. This twisting oonlinues until the free ends which ere. held by the twisting tool ere eeused to break leaving o-projeoling stub made up of the two twisted encle of the wire tie end this projeeling stub forum" the seal end at the some time, holds ihe ends of the tie together.
