IMPLEMENT FOR TYING THE ENDS OF WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,423, dated March 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. LANPHER, of Norwich, in the county of Ohenango, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Tying the Ends of Vire, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to quickly and effectually tie the two ends of wire together, and is more particularly designed for tying the ends of the wire of a car-seal; and to that end the invention consists in the combination of a holder, a twister pivoted to said holder and provided with a transverse groove in its end, and a plate over the end of said twister, and secured to the holder and provided with a slot adaptedto receive through it the overlapping ends of the wire and hold the portions of the wire adjacent to said end portions.
The invention also consists in certain auxiliary devices connected therewith, as hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a face View of a wire-tyer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, with the holder partly in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wire-tyer in its operative position. Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse section on line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the wire-blank in the shape in which it is introduced into the tying-machine, and Fig. 6 is a plan View of one of the forms of the wire tied by the machine.

A represents the holder of the tyer. Said holder is formed at one end with a head a, which is provided with an annular recess 1) in its under side and with a cap 0 over said recess, which cap is provided with a transverse slot t', which is preferably enlarged at the center for the purpose hereinafter explained. To this holder is pivoted the wiretwister 13, consisting of an annular head (1,
which is inserted into the recess b from the under side of the holder A, and is adapted to be rotated therein, and is provided with a transverse groove 6 in its face. An operating-shank f extends from the back of the said twister-head, and is provided with a suitable crank g for turning it.
In applying a seal to the door of a freightcar, a wire is passed with one end through the staple and hasp, and then bent into the shape of a loop, with the ends of the wire overlapping each other, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. Then the overlapping portions of the wire are introduced in the sloti of the holder-head a and inserted into the groove 6 of the twister-head d. Then, by turning the crank g, the twisterB is turned, and by turning with it the end portions of the wire lying in the groove 6, while the main portion of the wire is held stationary by the cap 0, the aforesaid end portions are twisted and coiled around each other, as illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings the central enlargement of the slot "5, being made to receive the coil. In order to retain the extremities of the wire under the cap 0 during the aforesaid operation of twisting and coiling, I form the said cap with overhanging lips 0 0, at opposite sides of the slot 2', under which the extremities of the wire are confined. After the wire is thus tied, it is removed through the slot 6 of the cap 0.
For the purpose of sustaining the described instrument in its position during the opera tion of tying the wire of a car-seal, I form the arm of the holder A with a brace C, and perforated ear 1), extending laterally therefrom at the end opposite to that which is provided with the head a, which latter also projects laterally from the said holder-arm. The brace C is provided with an eye in which the twister-shank is pivoted. The protruding end of said shank is squared for the attach ment of the crank g, which is formed with a corresponding square eye 6. To the ear 1) is hinged another brace O, which is adapted to be set at a proper angle to allow the two braces to rest with their free ends against the side of the car and sustain the twister-shank at such an angle as to allow the crank g to be freely turned without coming in contact with the side of the car. Ashoulderu on the ear 19 forms an abutment for the hinged end of the brace C, so as to prevent its movement beyond the aforesaid angle.
By providing the ear p with a slot 8, adapted to receive transversely through it the wire to be cut, I am enabled to utilize said machine for cutting the blanks from the wire.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a wire-tyer, the combination of the holder formed with the head to, having the annular recess 1) in its under side and provided with the cap 0, and slot 2' in said cap, the annular twister-head d, seated in said recess and provided with the transverse groove e, the shank f, extending from said twisterhead, and the crank g on said shank, substantiallyas described and shown.
3. In combination with the twister B, the holder A, having the head a, provided with the cap 0 and with the slot 2' in said cap, and lips 0 0 on the sides of said slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination of the holder A, formed atone end with the brace O and perforated ear p, and at the opposite end with the laterally-projecting head 0,, provided with the annular recess 12 and slotted cap 0, the twister B, having the head d, pivoted in the recess b and provided with the groove 6, and the shank f, pivoted to the brace O, the crank g on the shank f, and the brace C, hinged to the ear 19, substantially as described and shown.
