Description

Sept. 4, 1923. 1,466,658 R. S. JON ES SHIPPING BAG Filed April 17. 1922 by reference to the accompanying ceases se t. 4, 1923.
entree srArEs masts RUSSELL S. JONES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
smrrmo BAG.
Application filed April 17, 1922. Serial No. 553,755.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rossnm. S. Jones, citizen of the United States, residin at thicago, in the county of (look and state of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shipping Bags, of which the following is a full, clear. concise, and exact description.
My invention relates to shipping bags and means for applying addresses thereto. In accordance with luv invention the element which bears the addfess, such as a shipping tag or envelope, is ied to the neck of the bag at one end and has its free end adjacent or nearer the bottom of the bag so that the combined length of the bag and its addressing attachment. is within the length of the bag itself] This addressing attachment, in one embodiment of the invention, is in the form of an envelope that has an eyelet in its base side, the fiap side of the envelope being adjacent the bottom 'of the be The invention will be ore fully explained drawing in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 illustrates a sealing block to be employed in conjunction with a string for tying the bag neck; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the sealing block and the string associated therewith; Fig. 4 illustrates the neck of the bag gathered into folds preparatory to applying the string and the addressing element thereto; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the back side of the envelope; Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fi l; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 7 of Fig. 5.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
The bag 1 maybe formed of canvas or other suitable textile fabric. The addressing element 2 is provided with an eyelet 3 at one side thereof. This addressing element is shown as bein in the form of an envelope in which case t e eyelet is at the b base side thereof. The envelope is placed with its flap side thereof at or nearer the ban bottom, the envelope flap 4 being preferab y between the body of-the envelope and the bag so that the addressing side of the envelope is outermost.
The envelope and bag are desirably assembled by means of a sealing device comprising a lead or other soft metal block 5 formed with channels 6 therethrough through which the strin 7 is freely passed, initially. The ends of t e string are drawn upon by means of a suitable tool to contract the loop of the string through which the bag neck and the envelope are passed, this operation being performed after the prong 8 is passed through the eyelet 3 into the bag neck. After the loop of the string has been suthciently contracted to hold the bag neck and envelope against the side of the block 5 said block is crimped to hold the strin-g in its adjustment and to prevent the prone: 8 from being withdrawn.
The flap of the envelope may be supplied with a coating 9 of adhesive in order that the envelope may be sealed.
While I have herein shown and particularly described the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, but having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
1. The combination with a bag; of an envelope having an eyelet through its base side and placed with such side at the neck' of the bag and its flap side nearer the bottom of the bag; and a sealing device comprising a sealing block, a string having its ends passing through said block and its loop passing about the neck of the bag and the base side of the envelope and serving to gather the bag neck and the base side of the envelope against said block, anda prong carried by the block upon the side thereof adjacent the bag neck and passing throu h said eyelet and into the gathered neck of the ag. I v
2. The combination with a bag; of a tag having one end adjacent the bag neck and the other end nearer the bag bottom; end a sealin device comprising a block, a string having its ends passing through said block and its loop passing about the neck of the bag and the adjacent end of the tag and serving to gather the ba neck and this end of the tag against said lock,
and e prong carried h side thereof adjacent H2 in% through said tag.
n witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 13th day of April A. 1)., 192:2.
