UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JASON GIBBS, OF FREMONT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 142,910, dated September 16, 1873 application. filed July 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JASON GIBBS, of Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end view, and Fig. 3 a plan View, of my fence.
Each fence-post of my fence is made in two parts, A A, molded of clay, and then burned in the usual way. .On the inner side of one or both of the halves A A are formed ledges or projections to a, for the fence-rails B B to rest upon. These ledges or projections may all be formed on one of the halves A, or they may alternate, every other one on each of the two parts; or they may be divided, so that onehalf of each ledge or projection will be on each part. The two parts A A of each post are sunk into the ground for a suitable distance, so as to be firm, after which they are united by means of metal clamps O 0, one near the ground and the other at the upper end. The rails B B are readily inserted, either before or after the clamps are put on, and are held by the ledges or projections a a, upon which they rest.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The fence-post, made in two parts, of burned clay, with ledges or projections to a. between them, in combination with the rails B B and clamps O O, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of June, 1873.
JASON GIBBS. Witnesses J NO. ELWELL, LUTHER GIBBs.
