IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICINE-CASES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,887, dated September 16, 1873 application filed July 18,1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, M. OLMsTED BALDWIN, of Wamego, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Kansas, have invented a Compact- Folding Medicine-Gase, of which the following is a specification:

My invention is a compact-folding medicine-case, which, upon extension, places the entire contents thereof in a convenient position for the opera-tor, and is for the use of physicians, ships, and mercantile travelers in transporting medicines, samples of merchandise, Ste.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a case embodying my invention.

Case A is divided by a partition parallel with the top thereof, and at such distance therefrom as may be fitting to the containing vials or pots to be used, the upper compartment thus formedto be subdivided into smaller upright compartments a a, occupying so much space laterally and from behind forward as may be best suited to the containingvessels before mentioned. Dropping-fold B, is attached by hinges to the parallel partition above named, and divided, first, by .parallel partition at such distance from base of fold as shall leave compartment of size sutlcient to be subdivided into upright compartments b b, suitable for the reception of the containingvials. The compartment or tray b1, which is framed by the parallel partition, and anterior thereto, in droppin g-fold, is for containing spatulas, probes, Ste., and to be of suitable size therefor, the said dropping-fold to be closed upward and into the bottom thereof, being, when closed, liush with the face of case A, and of a depth, and in every way corresponding to the space anterior to the upright compartments a a. The drawer U at the bottom ofcase A is for containing miscellaneous instruments, and shall be of such height as shall occupy the space between base of the case A and parallel partition thereof, and of such depth, as shall, when closed, fill the space flush with the face of said case. The folds D D are of height and thickness corresponding to the case A, and one-half the length thereof, and are attached thereto by hinges at its outer anterior corners in such a manner that they close inward, and, meeting at the center of case A, are reta-ined by a lock,'thereby forming a compact case. The said folds D D are divided into compartments by a partition midway between the bottom and top thereof, and parallel therewith, the compartments thus formed being subdivided into upright compartments d d, suitable for the reception of the eontainin g vessels, the said compartments to occupy, from behind forward, a space only equaling in extent one-half the depth of the folds D D, the anterior one-half of said folds being fitted for the reception of extensionfolds E E, which are to be closed into the folds D D, the face thereof resting in contact with the compartments above mentioned. The ex tension-folds E E are of a thickness equal to one-half the folds D D, and are attached to the outer extremity thereof by hinges, and are to be of such size and attached in such manner as to be closed inward and into the same, the back of extension-folds E E being, when closed, ilush with the face of the folds D D. The extensionfolds E E are to be divided into compartments corresponding in every particular to the compartments of the folds D D.

I claim as my inventionl. That arrangement of the body of the case A, its compartments a a, droppingfold B, its compartments b b, and tray b1, and drawer 0, as hereinbefore mentioned, whereby the entire contents thereof are brought into convenient relation to the operator without changing the position of the case.

2. That arrangement of the folds D D of the ease A and extension-folds E E, hereinbefore mentioned, whereby the latter are, when closed, contained within the former, and when open present the same relative convenience above described.
