V I HUGH 'l. REED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
. 1 I 1 CALENDAR.
T 0 all '10 ham it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH T. Reno, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Calendars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This'invention relates to calendars, and has for one of its objects to provide an im' proved and simplified form of frame or holder for a perpetual calendar comprising a plurality of packs of cards bearing the several year and month calendars.
Another object is to improve and simplify the arrangement of the month name cards with respect to the month calendar cards, and of the index and information cards with respect to the year calendar cards. Other objects and improvements will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter described in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this specification, and then more specifically defined in the claims at the end of the description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view of a calendar constructed substantially in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the calendar.
Figure 3 is a detailed perspective view of aportion of the frame or holder showing the connection between the transverse partition member and the side portions of said frame ofholder.
' Figure at is a perspective view of the tray for holding the cards for the lower division of the frame.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the year calendar cards.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of one of the index cards.
Figure 7 is a perspective View of one of the information cards.
Figure 8 ,is a perspective view of one of the month calendar cards.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of one of the month name cards.
Figure 10 is a plan view of the blank or strip of metal or other suitable material 5 Application filed March 18, 1922. Serial No. 544,745.
from which the outside portions of the frame are formed, and
Figure 11 is a similar view of the blank from which transverse partition member is formed.
As indicated in Figure 10, the outer portions of the frame 1 for the calendar cards is made from a strip or blank 2 bent on the transverse dotted lines 3 to form the corners of the frame and on the longitudinal dotted lines 4 to form the front flanges 5 of the card pockets. The portion of the strip or blank 2 from which said front flanges 5 are formed are cut out in V-shape at intervals, as at'6, to give the proper shape at the corners 7 in Figure 1. Other V-shaped notches 8 are cutin the side portions of the frame to receive the ends of the transverse partition member 9.
The blank from which said partition .member 9 is made is illustrated in Figure 11, the front portion 10 thereof, which has its ends pointed at 11 to fit in said notches 8 of the side portions of the frame, being integral with a rear portion 12 which is angularly bent behind said front portion 10 to form a transverse partition between the upper pocket 13 and lower pocket 14 of the frame. The ends of said partition or rear portion 12 may be soldered to the sides of the frame at 15, Figure 8. The pointed ends 11 of the front portion 10 of the partition member 9 may also be soldered, as at 16, Figure 3, to the sides of the frame, as may also the ends of the frame strip 2 and the edges of the notches 6 of said strip, but any other suitable means of fastening any or all of these parts together maybe employed if preferred.
In the upper pocket 13 of the frame formed as above described a pack of calen- 'dar cards are arranged, and in the lower pocket 14: another pack of calendar cards are arranged, both packs being preferably placed behind transparent plates 17 through which the front cards of said packs may be seen from the front of the calendar frame,
as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Thepacks of cards are held in place in their respective The upper tray is preferablyequipped with a ring 20 near its upper edge for hanging up the calendar, while the lower edge portion of said tray may have a prop 21 hinged thereto for supporting the calendar in the position shown in Figure l.
The pack of cards in one pocket of the frame ii'icludes fourteen month calendar cards 2:? each printed with a different month calendar on its opposite faces, and three month name cards each having the names oi diflerent months printed along its upper and lower marginal portions on both faces, thus making up the twelve different month names. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the month calendar cards 2 and month name cards 23 make up the pack of cards in the lower pocket ll of the frame 1. but this is optional, the relative proportions of the two pockets 13 and 14; being variable at will. T he month cards 22, being printed on both sides as stated, may contain twentyeight month calendars, seven of thirty-one days beginning on each day of the week seven of thirty days beginning on each day of the week, seven of twenty-nine days be ginning on each day of the week, and seven of twenty-eight days beginning oneach day of the week. thus making up all the dilierent arrangements necessary for a perpetual month calendar. Said month calendar cards are made shorter than the pocket in which they are placed, and the month name cards are made substantially the same height as said pocket. so that the name of a month will show on the front name card above the month cards 22, as illustrated in Figure 1. Each month calendar card 22 maybe marked along its lower margin for convenience ac cording to the number of days in the particular month shown and the day of the week on which it begins. Thus, as illus trated in Figure 8, one card may be marked 31 Day month beginning Sunday and a corresponding line will be printed on the bottom of each side of each month card, said printed lines 24 being positioned so as to be covered by the bottom flange of the frame when the cards are arranged in the frame as shown in Figure 1.
The pack of cards in the other pocket oi the frame. that is. the upper pocket 13. Figures 1 and 2, includes seven year calendar cards 25. such as are illustrated in Figures 1. and 5, each of said cards having a diliterent calendar year printed on each of its faces, making fourteen year calendars in all. Seven of the year calendars will have three hundred and sixty-five days, each beginning on a different day of the week, while the other seven year calendars will have three hundred and sixty-six days, each beginning on a diflerent day of the week. Each of the year calendar cards has a line 26printed its bottom on both-sides below the calendars to indicate the number of days in the neat/s50 year and the day of the week on which it begins. In Figure 5 the face of the card showing bears the printed line 365 Day year beginning Sunday.
In addition to the seven year calendar cards 25 in the upper pack, there are a num bcr of cards such as are illustrated in Figures 6 and containing an index to the calendar cards and general information as to the use of the calendar, respectively. Several of each of these cards 27 and 28 may be used if desired without increasing the thickness of the upper pack beyond that of the lower pack, tor there are seventeen cards in the lower pack, including the month calendar cards and month name cards, and only seven year calendar cards in the upper pack.
The year cards may have the particular years of any century for which they may be used printed along their top margins; as indicated at 29 in Figure 5, where the years noted are those in the twentieth century which begin on Sunday. The year cards make a perpetual year calendar, and fourteen instead of seven cards may he used for the year calendars it printed on only one face instead of both faces of said cards.
I claim z- 1. ln a calendar, the combination with a front frame having upper and lower pock ets, ot a transverse partition permanently secured in said frame for separating said pockets, packs o'l calendar cards to fit in said pockets, separate trays to close the pockets at the he ck of the frame, and a prop attached to the tray for the upper pocket, and extending over the tray for the lower pocket.
2. In a calendar the combination with two packs of calendar cards, of afront frame having two pockets to hold said packs of cards, said frame comprising side members having front flanges, and a permanent transverse partition separating the two pockets and having front flanges overlapping both pockets and removable means for retaining the packs of cards in said pockets.
3. A. calendar frame having side members provided with inwardly extending front flanges with notches at opposite points therein, of a partition for dividing said frame into two pockets, said partition having a front flange lying in the plane of the front flanges of the side members and fitting in said notches.
4t. A calendar frame having side members provided with inwardly extending front flanges with notches at opposite points therein. of a partition for dividing said frame into two pockets. said partition haviug front flanges extending in opposite directions therefrom to overlie both pockets, said flanges of the partition fitting in the notches in the flanges of the side members.
