vented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to calendars belonging to the class of such articles or devices which are generally known as long term or perpetual calendars.
Several of the objects of the invention, among others, are first to provide an eficient calendar which can be instantly and precisely read; secondly, to provide a calendar which may be readily and precisely set for the period of any one month of any year without calculation on the part of the operator; and another 'object is to providea useful article at a comparatively low cost which 'can readily be applied to either a wall or a stand calendar. v v
Heretofore, many different forms of socalled perpetual, or long term calendars have been proposed in which are employed endless travelling bands or other devices whichare adjustable into various relative positions for the purpose of indicating selected calendar periods, but invariably in known previous instances, the calendar can only be correctly set by careful calculation on the part of the operator, and furthermore even when determinably set with such precision as may be obtainable with the means provided, the calendar indications frequently have to be read with additions or omissions in a manner that the reader must be thoroughly familiar therewith so as to obtain a correct reading.
According to the present invention, devices or means are designed and arranged whereby any person may with ease correctly. and precisely both set and read the calendar indications without any additions or omissions, and with no calculation whatsoever, the only requirement being the proper adjustment of the calendar, first by selection of the year and month and then determinably movinga travelling band or member `until a selected guideA number or sign thereonv matches a code number or sign which is automatically vgiven by setting of the year and month indicating l devices.

Referring now vparticularlyto the drawings the improved calendaris provided with a face plate orbody 1 having therein apertures or openings 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 through which are exposed indexes representing rev spectively the selectedyear, month, days, a code number and a guide number. Thefyear indexes and code numbers are printed in determined positions andorder on a card 7 which isv reversible therefore both sides can` be used and therebyeach year cardis prepared vto take care of a'period of eight years. The month index cards 8 have only one operative face and as each cardtakes Careof a period of only four months, three cards are required tomalie up the required number of cardsfor one year and it will be understood this set of three cards are all that are required for alperpetual'period. These month cards 8 have therein apertures `9 and l0 through which the year and code indexes i printed on the year card, `are yseparately exposed. It should be noted, the'code .exposing apertures 10 are variably arranged and that the apertures 19 are in invariable positions so as lto register with aperture 2 in the face plate. f
The dayand guide indexes' are printed on an endless band'or movable member 1l which is supported at the back of thep'late 1 by any l tive month card and a selected part of the day indexes on the said band are exposed through the aperture 4L in the plate l, below the other exposed indices.
AS stated above, the improved calendar may be applied. for use either in connection with a wall calendar or a stand calendar, the latter being suitable for a table, desk or the like and in which instance as shown in Figure 5, the plate l is preferably composed.

In order that the operation of an improved calendar constructed and arranged according to the present invention may be more readily understood, it should be noted that therein several important factors must be considered, one being the arrangement or location of the aperture 10 on the month index cards 8. These apertures must be con fined within the space that is exposed by the aperture 5 in the face l of the calendar, and which aperture is shown as being divided into twelve divisions. The apertures l0 associated respectively with the months January, February, March and April, when the month card is properly placed in position, will appear respectively in the first, second, third and fourth divisions of aperture 5 and the apertures 10 associated with the months of May to December will appear before the fifth to the twelfth divisions respectively.
In preparing the year index cards, the year indications are printed in positions so that they will be shown through the opening 2 and the respective opening 9 in the month cards. The particular arrangement of the row of code numbers for each year appearing on the year cards, must be determined by calculation when the year cards are prepared in the course of manufacturing the calendar. In the drawings the aforesaid code numbers are given for a period of four years and as stated both sides of the card can be usedv therefore each card may have thereon code numbers prepared for a period of eight years.
The traveling day index band, preferably endless, is another important factor or feature of this invention. On this band there are twenty-eight columns making four rows of numerals, each row starting with the numeral and ending respectively with the numbers 28, 29, 30 and 3l, and said columns and rows are slightly inclined perpendicularly and horizontally so that the figures are arranged to produce in effect a helix which will bring the figures substantially square with the opening l when the said band is in position for operation and through which opening only the figures of seven columns appear at one exposure in proper relation with the week days printed on the face plate over the aperture 4L. lt will be noted the exposed figures are brought substantially into horizontal alignment beneath 'the week day indications. By means of the arrangement of the figures or indicating characters on the band l1 representing days of the month any correct and desired combination of days of the month with days of the week of any month and any year may be obtained and precisely indicated. ln determining the arrangement of said numbers representiup` days, consideration is made of the fact that there being seven named days in each week and months of four lengths having twentyeight, twenty-nine, thirty or thirty-one days, the first day of each month may come on any one of the seven named days of t-he week, therefore said figures are arranged so that there are twenty-eight columns divisible into groups whereby seven columns are employed for each group of months which are divided, as will be understood into said four groups according to the number of days therein. lt will further be noted the columns are numbered in successive order from l to 2S inclusive and by means of such numbers guides are given for the setting of the calendar as will now be cescribed.

Card 7 was then placed behind card 8 so that the figures appeared through opening 9 in the card 8 and opening 2 in the face plate l. Code number 23 was shown through aperture i0 in the card 8 and aperture 5 in the face plate l. rlhe operator then moved the band ll along so that guide number 23 on the band appeared before aperture (3 in the face l. The seven columns enclosed by bracket d were then exposed through opening L in the plate l. c designates a setting of the calendar for the month of February, year 1924;. ln this instance location of the year card into the position to expose the index for that yearwould cause the code number M to ap pear and then the band 1l would be moved along until guide number 14 appeared and then t-he correct setting of the calendar would be obtained, that is, this being a leap year, there would be twenty-nine days indicated for said month of February and the 1924, and March, 1923. These examples can j easily be followed out to prove that the calendar is always exact if the simple rule of matching the guide number with the code number is always followed after selective setting of the year and month card.
The guide and code -numbers above referred to are automatically provided and are employed only to guide the adjustment of the calendar. These guide and code numbers are not intended linv any way to be used in reading the calendar and which reading it will befu'nderstoodr is always lmade in a conventional manner without necessitating familiarity with a given key or any omission or addition `whatsoever such as required when reading calendars of other types heretofore proposed.

A calendar as described having separately adjustable index members provided with variable indicating mattei' thereon, each of said members havng guiding means whereby said members may be adj usted into determinable positions relatively to each other so as to selectively set the calendar and one of said index members which is employed for indicating the days having thereon one hundred and eighteen lnumbers arranged in twenty-eight columns and in four rows forming a helix, whereby each of thev twenty-eight different combinations of seven consecutive columns, furnishes one of the twenty-eight different combinations of days of the month numbers, precisely and without modification so as to render the calendar readable in the conventional manner. l

A calendar as described having sepa rately adjustable index members provided naeepee with variable indicating matter thereon, each of said members having guiding means whereby said members may be adjusted into determinable positions relatively te each other so as to selectively set the' calendar and one of said index members which is employed for indicating the month having thereon the month indexes, an aperture for each month index arranged in an invariable position with respect to said indexes and another aperture for each index arranged in a variable position to said indexes.
8. A calendar of the class described having a body provided with a face plate, apertures in said plate for separately indicating code, year, month, day and guide indices, said code and year indices being provided on removable cards, said month indices being on separate removable cards, said day and guiding indices being provided on an endless band, a receptacle and support for said cards and band, apertures in said month card through which said code and year indices are exposed and said cards and band being capable of adjustment relatively to each other under guidance of said code and guidi/ng indices so as to selectively set the calendar 'for a determined period.
