To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JULIUs APPELBAU'M, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of the Bronx, in-the city and State. of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calendars, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in calendars, and particularly a calendar of that class known as perpetual calendars, an object of the invention being toprobil m-ae of Fig.7;
Fig. 9 is aplan view of the interior slides, and
vide such a calendar by which the correct calendar for any month or any year, past, present or future may be'ifound in a quick and convenient manner. It is a further object of my invention to provide such a device which is simple in construction and operation, and by virtueof these principles it will prove an article for popular use, while at the same time it forms an efiective medium for advertising purposes,
With these and other objects in view, embodiments of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, and these embodiments will be hereinafter more fully described with reference thereto, and the inv vention will be. finally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 thereof, one modification of my invention consists of a base plate 10, and two dials or revoluble plates 11 and 12, superimposed thereon and pivotalabout a point 13.
Upon the plate 12 at the outer portion of the same, there is provided ayradial slot 14, and designated by the words Yearly calendar numbers, of a length: corresponding to five divisions substantially corresponding in size to one radialdivision of scale 19, hereinafter described, the lower four divisions being designated by spaces 15, 16, 17 and 18, in which are contained the words Century No. 0, Century No. 1, Century No. 2, and Century No. 3,? designating four centurial classes determined by the remainders. Tn annular alinement with the said slot there is provided upon the disk 11 an annular scale 19 divided radially into 100 spaces, and annularly into five divisions, the outermost division 20 containing every two right hand digits for one century from 00 and increasing arithmetically to 99, and the other divisions contain corresponding designating numbers for every year in the four difierent centurial classes, and called yearly'calendar numbers. Thus there are provided in the said scale 400 yearly calendar Nos. which cover completely one cycle of the Gregorian calendar. The year 1917 is in century No. 3, and its yearly calendar number is 2. The yearly calendar numbers are from 1 to 14, the numbers 1 to 7 being yearly calendar numbers for common years, and the numbers 8 to 11 being yearly calendar numbers for leap years.
The dial 112 is provided with a radial slot 22 designated by the words Monthly cal. letters, and substantially of a size corresponding to one radial division of scale 25 hereinafter described. This slot is divided into eight annular divisions, the seven lower divisions being designated at each side of I Patented Jan, 15, Jllilfih In annular alinement with the said slot there is provided upon the disk 11 an annular scale 25. which is divided into 12 radial and eight annular divisions. The upper annular division 26 contains every month in the year, and-the other spaces are each centrally divided by a radial line 27. There are provided in said scale 25, monthly cal. letters for each month corresponding to each year of the 14 yearly classes.

A monthly calendar opening 28 is pro vided on the lower portion of the plate 12, and is divided radially into 7 spaces designated by the letters S, M, T, W, T, F, S, indicating the days of the week. Upon the base plate 10 there is provided a scale 29 so arranged that by having any 7 adjacent radial spaces exposed and the remaining spaces covered, a complete monthly calendar of 28 days is provided capable of seven rearrangements.
The plate 11 is provided between the yearly cal. number scale 19 and the monthly calendar letter scale 25 with three openings 30, 31 and 32.
Upon the plate 10 there are provided limiting markings 33 and 34 for the purpose of. locating the proper opening of the plate 11, in register with the scale 29 in order to give the proper number of days to the particular month.
Upon the periphery of the plate 11 there are provided projecting portions 35. 36 and 37, the space between the portions 37 and 35 1 being in radial alinement with the opening 32, and of a width corresponding to the distance between the limiting markings 33 and 34.to position a month of 31 days, the space annular scale 38. The opening 32 is of a radial width corresponding to theinner four annular divisions of the scale 29, so that when the said opening is in register with the said scale, the outermost annular division is covered by the plate, and in its place the divisions 38 and 39 of the plate 11 are exposed through the opening 28 of the plate 12, thereby giving the proper calendar for the month of 31 days, as shown in Fig.1.

former containing the numbers 23 to 30, and the latter the number 30. I
The opening 30 is of a greater annular length than the openings 31 and 32, which are equal in size, the length being greater by a distance equal to seven of the radial divisions of the scale 29. The opening 30 is divided into three parts 30, 30 and 30.
The ends of the projecting portions 37 and 36 of the plate'll are in radial alinement withthe ends of the opening 30, and
v intermediate the said projection there are provided two projecting portions 44 and 45, having their inner'edges in radial alinement with the ends of the intermediate division 30 of the opening 30. g
The space between the ortions 44 and 36 is designated by means 0 an arcuate arrow 46 for the month of February for common years, while the latter space is designated by means-of an arcuate arrow 47 for leap years. It will be seen that when the portions 45 and 37 are brought into relation with the markings '33 and 34, that the entire scale 29 I is exposed, providing a calendar for a month of 28 days. When the plate 11 is turned so that the projecting portions 36 and 44 are in relation to the markings 33 and 34, the lower line of the scale 29 containing the numbers 23 to 28 is covered by the plate, and in its place a series of divisions 48 upon the plate 12 adjacent the lower edge of the left hand division of the opening 30, and containing the numbers 23 to 29, is brought into view producing a calendar for 29 days.
The spaces between the projecting portions 37 and 35 have printed thereon the names of the months having 31 days, at 49, and the spaces between the portions 35 and '36 have printed thereon the months having 30 days, as at 50, and arcuate arrows 51 and '52 are provided respectively in the said places for more clearly designating the same.
All years beginning with 4001 up to 8000 inclusive, will move backward one. day from thatshown on the face of this calendar, in their respective classes, of yearly calendar Nos. for leap years, and yearly calendar Nos. for common years. What has been said of the period 4000 to 8000 is true of 8000 to one day for each 4000 years.
For determining dates according to the Julian system of intercalation, a scale 55,
shown on Fig. 4, is provided on the under side of the plate 10, or in any other suit able place or form, or upon-any of the subsequent embodiments hereinafter referred to,

In Fig. 5 T have shown a slightly modified form of my invention, alike in principle to the first embodiment, and in which onlv two dials 60 and 61 are employed, the same being pivotally connected at 62.
The respective centurial divisions are designated as at 64:. A common year scale 65, and a leap year scale 66 are provided upon the plate 61, the said scale being divided radially into 12 spaces, one for each month.
The plate 60.is divided into four sections, 67, 68, 69 and 70, one section for each class of the months. The inner portion of these sections is provided with four scales 71, respectively having the numbers l'to 28, 1 to 29, 1 to 30 and 1 to 31 arranged in a similar manner to the scale 29 of the first embodiment of my invention. The outer portion of these sections contains the names of the monthsof each class, and is provided without the circumference of the plate 61 with seven radial markings 75 each having a letter from A to G, denoting monthly calendar letters,
The plate 61 is provided at its periphery with a projecting portion 76 having a mark 77 provided thereon, which is adapted to be broughtinto register with the said markings 75. In radial alinement with the marking 77, there is provided an opening 78 of a width corresponding to the greatest number of annular divisions of the scales 71, and in annular alinement with the same, and of an annular width corresponding to seven of the radial divisions of the said scales. At
the upper edge of the said opening, there are provided seven spaces contalning the designating letters for the days of the week as at 79.
Tn Figs. 6 to 9 T have shown a further modified form of my invention, in which the-same assumes a rectangular shape. A casing or envelop portion 100 open at its ends, is provided with two'slide members 101 and 102, the said casing being recessed at permit of manipulation of the slides.
At the center of the casing and at the front side thereof, there are provided two slots 104 and 105,- each designated by the words Century No. 0, Century l lo. 1 Century No. 2 and Century No. 3. the said-slots corresponding in duplicate to the slot 14 of the first embodiment of my invention. At one side of the said slots, and upon the front of the casing there is provided a monthly calendar letter scale 106 for combelow the same there is provided a monthly calendar letter opening 110. At the left hand side of the opening 109 there is pro Vided an" elongated opening 111 at which is indicated the number of days of the month.
Upon the plate 101 there is provided a scale 112 containing the numbers 1 to 31 in the same order as in the first form of my invention for months of 31 days. Within the plate 102, and slidable with respect to the plate 101, I provide an opening 113, having .a configuration which will expose all of the numbers of the scale 112, and of a greater length at its right hand side than the said scale corresponding to three of the vertical divisions of the Scale. The lower edge of the opening corresponds to the configuration of the lower edge of the scale. Thus if a month of'31 days is desired, the opening is arranged over the scale as shown in Fig. 9.
There is also provided upon the slide 101 the numbers 28, 29, 30 and 31 as at 114C, spaced corresponding to the vertical divisions of the scale 112, and an opening 115 is-provided in the slide 102 through which one of these numbers may be exposed, the number 31 for a month of 31 days, and this number may be also viewed through the elongated opening 111 of the casing.
A. letter scale 116 of the letters A to G is provided on the slide 101, an elongated opening 117 being provided in the slide 102, exposing all of the letters at any position of the said slide. One of these letters is exposed through the opening 110 of the casing.
In Fig. 10 T have shown the form of calendar shown in Figs. 6 to 9, adapted for a circular calendar as in the first embodiment of my invention. This form comprises the tworotating plates 120 and 121 the plate 120 containing the scale 122, an the numbers 28, 29, 30 and 31'as at 123, and the plate 121 being provided with openings 124. and 125 adapted to expose the said scale and number. The operation for exposing the proper class of month, c. a month of 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, is the same as that employed in the form shown in Figs. 6 to 9.
It will be understood that if desired, the leap years may be designated instead of by the numbers 8 to 14, by the numbers 1 to 7, distinguished from the same numbers for common years in any suitable manner, as by printing the same in red.-
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory embodiments of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a calendar of the character described, a scale containing yearly indicating characters of l tdenominations adapted to indicate the first day of the year for common and leap years, a scale containing monthly indicating characters for common years, and a scale containing monthly inclicating characters for leap years adapted to indicate the first day of the month, said yearly indicating characters adapted to designate said monthly indicating characters, and a monthly calendar sca e having thirteen divisions, and means for exposing any seven adjacent divisions, providing seven variations, said variations adapted to be designated by said monthly indicating characters.
2. In a calendar of the character described, a designating scale having 400 divisions divided into four classes, the said divisions containing designating characters of 141 denominations adapted to indicate the first day of the year for common and leap years, means designating said divisions in each of said classes from 1 to 100, a monthly calendar scale for common years and a monthly calendar scale for leap years, said scales containing characters adapted to indicate the first day of the month, said designating characters of said designating scale adapted to designate said characters of said monthly calendar scales, and a monthly calendar scale of 28, E29, 30 and 31 days having thirteen divisions, and means for exposing any seven adjacent divisions providing seven variations, said variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar characters.
3. In a calendar of the character described, a designating scale of 400 divisions divided into four centurial classes, means designating said divisions in each centurialclass respectively from 1 to 100, characters in each of said divisions corresponding to from 1 to 7 and from 8 to 14, the characters from 1 to 7 designating common years, said characters adapted to indicate the first day of the year, the characters from 8 to 11 designating leap years, a monthly calendar letter scale for common years, and a monthly calendar letter scale for leap years, said letters adapted to indicate the first day of the month, said designating characters adapted to designate said letters, and a monthly scale having thirteen divisions, and means for exposing any seven adjacent divisions providing seven variations, said-variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters.
4. In a calendar of the character described, comprising a base plate and a plate movable thereon, a designating scale on one of said plates, comprising four hundred divisions divided into four classes having 100 designating characters in each class and means designating said characters from 1 to 100 respectively, a monthly calendar letter scale on one of said plates having letters for common years,and a monthly calendar letter scale having letters for leap years, said designating characters adapted to designate said letters, a monthly calendar scale -on one of said plates having thirteen divisions, and means on the other of said plates adapted to expose any seven ad jacent divisions providing seven variations, said variationsadapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters.
5. In a calendar of the character described, comprising a base plate and a plate pivotal on said base plate, and having an opening therein, a designating scale on one of said plates providing four hundred divisions divided into four classes having 100 designating'characters in each class, and a division designating said characters in each of said classes from 1 to-100, a monthly calendar letter scale for common years, and a monthly calendar letter scale for leap years, said letter scales being divided into 12 divisions, said divisions being designated for each month, said opening of said pivotal I plate adapted to expose one of said monthly divisions, said designating characters adapted to designate said letters, and a monthly calendar scale on said plate having thirteen divisions, and means for exposing any seven adjacent divisions, providing seven variations, said variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters.
6. In a calendar of the character described, a base plate, a top plate and an intermediate plate, said top plate and said intermediate plate being pivotal with respect to said base plate, a designating character scale on said intermediate plate comprising four hundred divisions divided into four centurial classes and having designatingcharacters in each centurial class, and a division designating said characters in each class respectively, from 1 to 100, said top plate being provided with a slot adapted to expose the said designating characters in alinement with any one of the said last named numbers from 1 to 100, means on said top plate designating said four divisions as four centurial classes, a monthly calendar letter scale for common years, and a monthly calendar scale for leap years, said designating characters adapted to designate messes and intermediate plate being pivotal upon said base plate, a designating character scale comprising four hundred divisions divided into four centurial classes having 100 designating characters in each class, and means designating said characters in each class respectively, from 1 to 100, a monthly calendar letter scale on said intermediate plate for common years, and a monthly calendar letter scale on said intermediate plate for leap years, said scales being divided into 12 CllVlSlOIlS, said divisions being designated for each month, said top plate being provided with a slot adapted to expose any one of the said 12 divisions of said letter scales, means on said top plate containing the designating characters corresponding to the designating characters of said designating scale, and adapted to designate said monthly calendar letters, and a monthly calendar scale having thirteen divisions, means for exposing any seven adjacent divisions, providing seven variations, said variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters. r
8. In a calendar of the character described, a base plate, a top plate and an intermediate plate, said top plate and intermediate plate being pivotal upon said base plate, a designating character scale comprising four hundred divisions divided into four centurial classes having 100 designating characters in each division, and a division designating said characters in each division respectively, from 1 to 100, a monthly calendar letter scale for common years, and a monthly calendar letter scale for leap years, said designating characters adapted to designate said letters, and a monthly calendar scale onsaid base plate having thir teen divisions, said intermediate plate being provided with a slot adapted to expose said calendar scale, said top plate being provided With an opening adapted to expose any seven adjacent divisions of said calendar scale, providing seven variations," said-variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters.
9. In a calendar of the character described, a base plate, a top plate and an intermediate plate, said top plate and intermediate plate being pivotal upon said base plate, a designating character scale comprising four divisions having 100 designating characters in each division, and a division designating said characters in each division respectively, from 1 to 100, a monthly calendar letter scale for common years, and a monthly calendar letter scale for leap years, said designating characters adapted to designate said monthly calendar letters and a monthly calendar scale on said base plate having thirteen divisions, said intermediate plate being provided With a slot adapted to expose said calendar scale, said top plate being provided with an opening adapted to expose any seven adjacent divi sions of said calendar scale providing seven Variations, said variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters, and means on said base plate adapted to regulate the position of said top plate to expose the proper seven divisions of said calendar scale, said last named means being designated by monthly calendar letters corresponding to the letters of said monthly calendar letter scale.
10. In a calendar of the character described, a base plate, a top plate and an intermediate plate, said top plate and inter mediate plate being pivotal upon said base plate, a designating character scale co1nprising four hundred divisions divided into four centurial classes having 100 designating characters in each class, and a division designating said characters in each class respectively, from 1 to 100, a monthly calendar letter scale for common years, and a monthly calendar letter scale for leap years said designating characters adapted to dos ignate said monthly calendar letters, a monthly calendar scale on, said base plate having thirteen divisions of 14 characters,
slots in said intermediate plate adaptedto expose said calendar scale, and means on said intermediate plate adapted to vary the numbers in said calendar scale to provide months of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days respectively, said top plate being provided with an opening adapted to expose any seven adjacent divisions of said calendar scale providing seven variations, said variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters.
11. In a calendar of the character described, a base plate and a plate pivotal on said base plate, a designating character scale on one of said plates, comprising four hundred divisions divided into four centurial classes having 100 designating characters in each class and-a division designating said characters in each class respectively, from 1 to 100, a monthly calendar letter scale for common years, and a monthly calendar letter scale for leap years, said designating characters adapted to designate said monthly calendar letters, and monthly calendar scales on said base plate of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days respectively, said scales each being divided into Weekly divisions of thirteen characters, and an opening in said pivotal plate adapted to expose any seven adjacent divisions of either of said scales, providing seven variations, said variations adapted to be designated by said monthly calendar letters.
12. In a calendar of the character-described, a pair of co'ciperating plates, one of said plates provided with a single calendar scale having thirteen divisions, any seven adjacent divisions adapted to form a complete monthly calendar, said calendar scale being capable of seven variations, said scale containing numerals from 1 to 28, said other scale being provided with an opening adapted to simultaneously expose all of the numerals of said calendar scale, and additional numerals to 31 on one of said plates adapted to be brought into visible relation with said calendar scale by movement of one of said plates with respect to the other to rovide calendars respectively for months of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days, 28, 29, 30 and 31 being respectively the highest numerals appearing on said calendars.
13. In a calendar of. the character described, a pair of coiiperating plates, one of said plates provided with a single calendar scale having thirteen divisions, any seven adjacent divisions adapted to form a complete monthly calendar, said calendar scale being capable ofseven variations, said scale containing numerals from l to 28, said other scale being provided with an opening adapted to simultaneously expose all of the numerals of said calendar scale, and additional other portions respectively adapted to partially expose said calendar scale, and additional numerals to 31 on said other plate adjacent said open portions adapted to be brought into relation with said calendar scale in substitution of the part of said scale not exposed by said open portions to provide calendars respectively for months of a greater number of days than 28.
14. In a calendar of the character described, a pair of cotiperating plates, one of said plates provided with a single calendar scale having thirteen divisions, any seven adjacent divisions adapted to form a comlete monthly calendar, said calendar scale Eeing capable of seven variations, said scale containing numeral from 1 to 28, said other scale being provided with an opening adapted to simultaneously expose all of the numerals of said calendar scale, and additional numerals to 31 on one of said plates adapted to be brought into visible relation with said calendar scale by movement of one of said plates with respect to the other to provide calendars respectively for months of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days, 28,29, 30 and 31 being respectively the highest numerals appearing on said calendars, and a third plate provided with an opening adapted to expose seven only ofsaid thirteen divisions of said calendar scale, and adapted to be moved with respect to said calendar scale to pro-,
vide seven variations.
15. In a calendar of the character described, a pair of coiiperating plates, one of said plates provided with a single calendar scale having thirteen divisions, any seven adjacent divisions adapted to form a complete monthly calendar, said calendar scale being capable of seven variations, said scale containing numerals from 1 to 28, said other scale being provided with an opening adapted to simultaneously expose all of the numerals of said calendar scale, and additional numerals to 31 on one of said plates adapted to be brought into visible relation with said calendar scale by movement of one of said plates with respect to the other to provide calendars respectively for months of 28, 29, 30 and 31'days, 2s, 29, 30 and 31 being respectively the highest numerals ap= pearing on said calendars, limiting means characterized respectively by the names of months of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days on one of said plates, and on the other of said plates adapted to be brought into relation with said limiting means to. position said respective calendars.
16. In a calendar of the character de scribed, a pair of cotiperating plates, one of said lates provided with a single calendar scale aving thirteen divisons, any seven adjacent divisions adapted to form a complete monthly calendar, said calendar scale being capable of seven variations, said.v scale containing numerals from 1 to 28, said other scale being provided with an opening adapted to simultaneously expose all of the numerals of said calendar scale, and additional numerals to 31 on one of said plates adapted to be brought into visible relation with said calendar scale by movement of one of said plates with respect to the other to provide calendars respectively for months of 28, 29, 30 and 31 days, 28, 29, 30 and 31 being respectively the highest numerals appearing on said calendars, and a third plate provided with an o ening adapted to expose seven only of said tiirteen divisions of said calendar scale, and adapted to be moved with respect to said calendar scale to provide seven variations, a scale on one of said plates, and a pointer on said last mentioned scale and adapted to indicate the variations.
17. In a calendar of the character described, a designating scale having 400 divisions divided into four classes, the said divisionseontainin designating characters, and means designating said divisions in each of said classes from 1 to 100, said designating characters indicating the first day of a year.
18. In a calendar of the character de scribed, a designating scale having four hundred divisons divided into four classes, the
said divisions containing designating characters characterized for common and leap years, and means designating said divisions in each of said classes from 1 to 100, said designating characters indicating the first day of the year.
19. In a calendar of the character described, a pair of cooperating plates, a designating scale on one of said plates having 400 divisions divided into four classes, the said divisions containing designating characters, and means designating said divisions in each of said classes from 1 to 100, said designating characters indicating the first day of the year, said other plate being pro vided with an opening adapted to expose any one of said desig ating means, and the four designating c iaracters designated thereby.
20. In a calendar of the character described, a pair of cooperating plates, a designating scale on one of said plates having 400 divlsions divided into four classes, the said divisions containing designating characters, and means designating said divisions in each of said classes from 1 to 100, said designating characters indicating the first day of the year, said other plate being provided with an opening adapted to expose any one of said designating means, and the four designating characters designated thereby, and means adjacent said opening adapted to designate said designating characters exposed thereby as of four centurial classes.
21. In a calendar of the character described, a monthly calendar fdesignating scale, having 8td1visions divided into 2% classes of seven designating characters each, each two of said classes being designated by a month, said designating characters adapted to indicate the first day of the month for common and leap years.
22. In a calendar of the character described, a pair of cooperating plates, a monthly calendar designating scale on one of said plates having 84 divisions divided into 2i classes of seven designating characters each, each two of said classes being designated by a month, said designating characters adapted to indicate the first day of the month for common and leap years, said other plate being provided With an opening adapted to expose any one of said months, and the characters designated thereby, and means on said other plate adjacent said opening in alinement with said designating characters, and representing the first day of the year for common and leap years.
