Be it known that I, ERNns'r J B mssnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to memorandum devices by which business or engagements, which should be attended to on certain dates, may readilyybe presented to the attention of the proper person. I accomplish this by means of a form of calendar device in which the days of the current month are presented to the eye of the user, together with memorandum tabs, which are removably secured in alignment with different dates. When anengagement for a future month is to be noted, the calendar device is moved into position to insert an appropriate tab in the appropriate location whereupon thecalendar device may again be put into the appropriate position for the current month.
The memorandum tabs are preferably designated by'letters which may designate individuals'or companies with which certain engagements are concerned. Upon the arrival of a day at the indication of which a tab is secured, the user may refer to the record files, which are preferably stored in the back of the casing in which the calendar device is located. y
The files may comprise jackets or folders, one for each letter of the alphabet, each jacket preferably being subdivided asby partition sheets, into sub-compartments, each of which is preferably reserved for a particular date designation. The movable calendar device carries designations of the months, in spaced relation, and preferably carries the names of the days of the week in series, these days of the week aligning. when a particular month strip is brought into view, with designations of the days of the month which may be printed upon the face of the casing. The strips bearing the days of the week are adjustably mounted so that the calendar may be reset each year to bring the days of the week into alignment with the days of the month which coincide with the days of the week.
In accordance with the above, on Thursday, June 10th, for example, the user may find an A We insert in al gnme t it-h the rier of the calendar device and likewise in alignment with the designation 10 on the casing. On this date he removes the tab and turns to the A? jacket in. hisrecord file and opening the same to the subdivision marked Thursday finds the data or records to which the memorandum refers, together, perhaps, with other papers. When the matter has been attended to the papers may be removed, or if they again require attention on some fixed future date, they may be replaced in the compartment I appropriate to such date and the memorandum tab again positioned in alignmentwith such future date on the calendar device.
I preferably produce the effects referred to by the provision of a rotatable carrier, preferably a drum, mounted within a casing having awindow therein. Channel strips are mounted about the drum wit-h spring devices therein for removably securing the memorandum tabs. Strip holders are secured to the longitudinal edges of the channel shaped members referred to and calendar strips mounted therein, certain strips bearing the designationsof the days of the week and other strips bearing the names of the various months. Numerals 1 to 31. are displayed on the face of the casing adj acent to the window. The days of theweek strips contain the designations of 31 or more days of the month and are arranged to be bent under at one or both ends, at different distances from the ends, when they are mounted in their holders, so as to properly align the days of the week of each month of the current year with the days of the month 1 to 28 or 30, 31, &c.
In order that a clearer understanding of my invention may be had, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating one embodiment of my invention. Referring to the drawings, the device illustrated comprises a. base 1 on which is mounted a casing 2 having a vertical front portion 3 and upwardly and rearwardly sloping portion 4, a horizontal portion 5 to the rear of portion 4, an upwardly extending portion (3 to the rear of portion 5, and a rear portion 7. A window 8 is formed in the sloping portion 4 of the casing. The casing 2 is provided with end portions designated generally as 9, 9. The filing eom partment may be provided to the rear of easing 2 between the rear wall 7 of easing 2, the wall 10 adjacent the rear of the base 1 and the end walls designated at'll, 11.
The calender device, in the form of construction illustrated herein, comprises a rotatable drum or carrier. This may be formed by the provision of a tube 12 which is secured to or integral with a number of spaced discs 13. Stud shafts 14, 14 are secured Within the opposite ends of the tube 12 and are rotatably mounted in the end members of casing 2. Stud shaft 14 is provided with an end portion 15 of reduced diameter to which the handle member 16 is secured, this handle member preferably taking the form of a knurled knob. The knurled knob 16 is similarly mounted on the opposite end of the construction so that the drum may be operated from either end.
The stub shafts 14, 14 may conveniently be rotatahly supported by members 9 which are secured to the end members 9 of the casing. The handle member 16 may be provided with a ratchet wheel. 17 with which the springpressed pawl 18 engages to provide means for holding the drum non-positively in any adjusted position.
The discs 13 are given an irregular peripheral shape. shoulders being provided upon which the channel. members 19 are mounted. Each channel member is bent from a single strip of sheet metal so as to provide a forward flange 20 a web portion 21 and a rear flange 22, which is preferably of less height than flange 20. The upper edge of flange 20 is bent forwardly to form an edge flange 23 and the upper edge of flange 22 is bent rearwardly to form an edge flange 24.

Each spring tongue 23 extends upwardly and forwardly from the base 27 and then bends as indicated at 30, and then extends downwardly and rearwardly as is shown at 31, which portion may be approximately parallel to the portion 28 of the spring. A. channel member and its spring member may be assembled by inserting the downwardly extending portions 31 of the springs through the openings of the flange 20 and by forcing the base portion of the spring member about the bottom portion of the channel member, with the rear flanges 29 of the spring member engaging against the rear faceof the rear flange 22 of the channel member. then so positioned the lower edge portion 32 of each arm 31 of a spring tongue will press resiliently against the forward face of flange 22 of the channel member.
The channel members are secured upon the seating shoulders of discs 13 by means of screws 33 which extend through the bottoms or web portions 21 of the channel members.
Each web portion 21 of a channel member seats against a shoulder of each disc 13 indicated in Fig. 3 at 34. The flanges 20 and 22 of each channel member rest against outwardly extending shoulders 35 and 36 of the discs 13 with the spring tongues 28 extending forwardly between the discs 13.
There are twelve channel members 19 thus mounted in position, one for each month of the year. A calendar strip holder 37 is mounted in position abovethe bent portions 30 of the spring arms of each channel mem ber. Each strip-holder 37 romprises a strip adapted to extend across the periphery of the rotatable carrier. this strip having its longitudinal edges channeled as is shown at 38, in Fig. 11. Each strip holder is slid into position above the top portions 00 of the spring tongues with its edges extending beneath the forward edge flange 23 of one channel member and the rearward edge flange 24 of the channel member immediately in advance ofthe same.

A. str1p39 is inserted 11]. its holder and a *mpnth strip is inserted in the same holder 37 above the strip The month strips are celluloid or other suitable transparent material. so that the days of.- the week carried on the strip 39 are visible therethrough. Each of these month strips carry'the name of one of the months, January to December. Preferably, the strip 39 carries the names of the days of the weelr'along the top of the "strip, and the strips 40 carry the names of the month at the bottom of the strip, so that thenam'es' of the daysof the Week and the name of themonth' will beboth clearly visible. The width of strips 39 and 40, if
desired, may be so chosen that these strips occupy respectively the upper and lower half of the channel of strip holder 37 as shown in Fig. 2. With this arrangement strip 40 need not be transparent.
The numerals 1 "to 31 are printed, as is shown at 41, in a continuous series on the face of the sloping portion at of the casing immediately above the window 8. These day of the month indications are preferably printed on a suitablestrip which is held within a channeled holder 12; Members 43, 43, are provided at the ends of window 8, being secured in position by screws 44. which extend into the inner frame member 15 of the "casing which may be provided at the ends of the structure to extend parallel with the portions 3, Land 5 of the casing 2. Pins 16 may be used to secure the day of the month strip holder in position. I
A small indicator 17 of coloredcelluloid or other suitable light transmissive material may be slidably mounted in holder 42 so thatthe same may be manually adjusted to imlicate the current date, or any other time, if desired.

The tabs are preferably ke'pt,when not in use, in proper order in aisuitable rack or receptable. es shownfa channel strip 19 may be secured to the upper vertical portion 6 of the casing, holder 49 contain-,
ing a strip 50 having printed thereon the letters of the alphabet in succession. Immediately below the same a channeled member 51 may be positioned. This member may be entirely similar to the channel members 19 previously described and may have a spring member similar to the spring members described. in connection with channel members 19, associated therewith. This spring member has spring tongues 52 ex tending through openings in the flange 53 of the channel member engaging against the flange 54: of the chamber member. The various tabs i8 may be held in position for use by inserting the same between spring tongues 52 and. flange 51,111 alignment with the corresponding letters of the alphabet printed on strip 50. The channel member 51 may be mounted. in position by inserting the same through an opening in the top flange 5 of the casing.
The calendar strips 39 may be bent under at the ends on any desired folding lines such as are indicated at 56 in Fig. 9 when the device is adjusted for a different year. Each stripholder 37 with strips 39 and 4-0 carried thereby may be withdrawn through an opening 57 in one of the end walls of. the casing, the drum being rotated to align the strip holders successively with this opening. The strips 39 are then bent so that the proper day of theweek will align with the numeral 1 of the day of the month strip 41, and so that the strip .39 will not extend further to the right than a position in align mentwith the last day of that particular month such as 28, 30 or 31. The strip 39 is then re-positioned in its holder with. its month strip 10 above. the same and the holder is again replaced in position.
In the operationof the device the drum may be rotated by knob 16 until the current month, for example December, is visible at the Window '8. Any memorandum tabs which have been positioned in alignment with dates in Decemberwill likewise be visible at the window, for example, the A tab shown in the drawings as in alignment with the. date indications for Saturday the 4th. It will be obvious that any desired number of tabs may be inserted in alignment with any date indication. On Saturday the 4th the A tab shown may be removed and re-placed in the holder for A. tabs at the left of the channel frame 51.
The data or correspondence indicated by this A tab may then be consulted. The record files are preferably held in the casing at the rear of frame member 7 as stated.
-Preferably a plurality of jackets similar to '4; mamas l rol'erahly, the jiltfli-ilb 5i are divided into compartments each, of which may he used for records to be takenup on a particular day of the week, these compartments bein separated by sheets 58 which maybe labeled with abbreviations for the days'of the week. The data referred to by the particular tab 48 shown in the drawings should be placed in the A. jacket in the sub-division thereof reserved for matters to be attended. to on Saturday. Other filing arrangements may, of course, be used but the above system is thought preferable.
It should be understood that my invention is not limited strictly to the detail of construction described. but is as broad as is indicated by the accompanying claims.

In a memorandum device, the combination of a frame having awindow therein, a carrier rotatab-ly mounted in said frame, means for indicating the names of the month about said carrier in spaced relation, means on said frame adjacent said window for indicating in serial order the days of a month, and means on said carrier adjacent said month indications for removably holding memorandum tabs in positions which will align the same with desired day ind cations when the adjacent month indication is aligned with said window, said carrier being arranged to align with said window any month indication together Withthe tabs carried adjacent thereto.
2. In a memorandum device, the combination of a frame having a transversely extendingwindow therein, a carrier sup ported by said frame and positioned to be progressed past said Window, means for indicating the names of the months on said carrier, in spaced relation, means on said frame adjacent said window for indicating in order the days of a month, means on said carrier, adjacentsaid month indications, for rcmovably holding memorandum tabs in positions which will align the same wit desired day indications when the adjacent month indication is aligned with said window, and means for progressing said carrier and holding the same in position with any month indication and the tabs carried adjacent thereto, in alignment with said win- (low.
3. In a nleinoranduu'i device the combination of a frame having a transversely extending window therein, a carrier supported by said frame and positioned to be progressed past said window, means for indicating the names of the months across said carrier, in spaced relation lengthwise thereof, and the days of the week in each means on said carrier for removably holding memorandum tabs. in alignment with any week day indications, said carrier being arranged to align with said window any month indication together with the tabs carried adjacent thereto, said week day'indications being arranged to properly align, for any year, with the corresponding day of the month indications on the frame.

In a memorandum device, the combination of a rotatable carrier, a frame supporting the same, strip holders carried by said carrier, successively, one for. each month, strips mounted in said strip holders, each having printed thereon successively the days of a month, and spring means for removably holding memorandum tabs in alignment with any, day designation.
6. In a memorandum device, the combination of a rotatable carrier, a frame supporting the same, strip holders carried'by said carrier, successively, one for each month, calendar strips of flexible material, each having printed thereon the days of the week for more than four weeks, mounted for longitudinal adjustment in said holders, and transparent strips mounted in said holders above said calendar strips, each bearing the designation of a difierent month.
7. In a memorandum device, the combination of rotatable carrier, metal strips extending transversely across the same, each bent in channel shape, with the longitudinal edges of the strips bent forwardly and rearwardly respectively and calendar strip holders positioned each against'the forward edge flange of one, and the rearward edge flange of the next one, {in advance, of said bent strips.

In a memorandum device, the combination of a rotatable carrier, metal strips extending transversely across the same, each bent in channel shape outwardly of the carrier, the forward flange of each channel strip having a series of openings there through with rearwardly directed flanges adjacent the openings, and springs inserted through said openings and pressing against the forward face of the rear flange of each channel strip, said strips being adapted to support calendar strip holders. i
9. In a memorandum device, the combination of a rotatable carrier, metal strips extending transversely across the same, each bent in channel shape outwardly of the carrier, the forward flange of each channel strip having a series of openings therethrough with rearwardly directed flanges adjacent the openings, the longitudinal edges of the forward and rear flanges of the channel strips being bent forwardly and rearwardly respectively, springs extending forwardly and upwardly from the bottom or each forward flange, and then bent downwardly and rearwardly through said open ings, to press against the forward face of the corresponding rear flange, and calendar strip holders mounted above the bent springs, with their forward and rear edges inserted beneath the rear and forward edge flanges of adjacent channel strips.
10. In a memorandum device, the combination of a rotatable carrier, a metal strip bent in channel shape, the forward flange thereof having a longitudinal series of open ings therethrough, and a spring member having a base portion adapted to fit around the base of said channel strip, with fiat spring portions extending forwardly and upwardly therefrom, and then bent rearwardly and downwardly to extend through said openings into contact with the forward face of the rear flange of the channel strip.
11. In a memorandum device, the combination of a rotatable drum, channel members arranged around the same to extend transgage the opposite flange to form spring holders for memorandum tabs.
18. In a memorandum device, the combination of a casing, movable calendar indicia therein, having month designations and day designations for each month, lettered 1nemorandum tabs,'means for removably holding the same adjacent to each day designation, and correspondingly lettered data jackets in said casing and having sub-divisions corresponding to said day designations.
