Be it 'known thatl, CHARLES C. HUBER, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvemerits in Garbage Containers, of which the following is'aspecification. I
My invention relates to a garbage container and the principal object is to afford a durable, practical and efficient structure of the underground type.
In a more particular aspect, the invention has for its object to providea concrete, cement, or artificial stone body portion adapted to be sunk in the ground, and having assoclated therewith a cover and coveroperatingv means which are protected against rain and moisture, and which are in every wayeflicient from a mechanical viewpoint.
A further purpose of the improvement is to afford a structure wherein the cover-opcrating means is, in large measure, completely embedded and housed within the concrete structure of the body. Another purpose of the invention is to afford a concrete body construction in which a cover is opened by depressing part of the operating means, and is automatically closed again when such depressible part is released.
Still an additional object oithe invention is to afford an arrangement of operating means including a flexible shaft, such op erating means having endwise movement guideway or tube, for opening the cover. j
Another purpose of the invention is to utilize a cover of metal or similar material, in conjunction with a body of concrete or the like, and accomplish this by arranging the cover on supports which are partially embedded in the body.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear clearly from the follo=wing description, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end ofthe specification. i

In the embodiment illustrated, which is intended merely as an example of one possible adaptation and not as limiting the invention to any particular form, A designates the body which is preferably formed of concrete, artificial stone, or similar maview on-line7 7 of terial that is cast orpoured into form, and
bedded therein, and serving to strengthen the structure, and to prevent spreading or cracking at the upper end. Arranged upon the body, in a manner that will be described presently, is .a cover consisting of inner and outer metallic wallsC, C, which are spaced from each other as shown in Figure 4-, and. held together by bolts 0 fixedly secured to the outer wall, and nuts 0, which cooperate with the ends of said bolts and engage the inner wall. The outer wall C is extended beyond the inner wall to afford acollar or flange 0 which extends downwardly around the outside of the body when the cover is closed. venting access of heat in summer and cold in winter.
Fixedly secured to the cover is a curved plate D, provided with ears (Z, which latter are mounted on and fixed to the rod E, which in turn is journaled in suitable stationary supports. To this end, the body is provided with projecting portions or abutments f, within which are embedded the lower ends of supports 9, the upper ends of said supports having openings which receive the rod E. lVith this arrangeemnt, it will be seen that the rod E is fixedly connected with, and turns with, the cover as the latter is opened. or closed. Fixedly mounted upon the rod E is a curved operating arm E, and a curved controlling arm E which are also movable with the cover and function in the manner that will now be described.
The cover is opened by operating means arranged on the body, such operating means having engagement with the operating arm E, and being movable endwise in its cooperation with the latter. The operating means is positioned and travels in a U-shaped guideway, preferably constituted by a tube in the concrete body, and embraces a flexible shaft affording a connection between reciprocable plunger devices in the ends of such guide- -v- To accomplish this, I employ the U-shaped tube E, which is embedded in the concrete body and constitutes the guideway in which the operating means is located and moves. Said operating means includesa flexible shaft F extending throughout the curved portion of the guideway, and a plunger member, F see Figure 6, which cooperates with the operating arm E. Arranged to engage the opposite end of the flexible shaft F is a depressible plunger F provided at its upper end with an enlarged portion or head F constituting a foot engaging portion. Carried by the plunger F is a sleeve F which engages the outer surface of the tube F, see Figure 6, and thereby prevents water or moisture from getting into said tube.
The plunger member F preferably ineludes a wick F see Figure 7, surrounded by a coil spring F and arranged on the top thereof is a mass of cotton waste or other lubricant-holding material F which serves to keep lubricated the roller F, that is car ried by the plunger and contacts with the actuating arm E. Thus as the plunger F is depressed, the plunger F is elevated, which causes the actuating arm E to be moved to the position shown in dotted lines'in Figure 1-, and thus open the cover. The cover is held open as long as the plunger F is held in depressed position, and when the latter is released, the cover is automatically closed. I
To this end, I employ a pair of coil. springs H, H, which surround therod E, and are successively put under tension as the cover is opened The fixed end it of the spring H engages one support 9, while the free end of said spring is formed into a coil 72 which lies in the path of the cover as shown in Figure 9. The fixed end it of the spring H engages the other support 9, while the free end of said spring is bent to form the arm hiwhich also lies in the path of the cover, but rearwardly of the point of initial engagement between the cover and coil it, so that as the cover is thrown open, the spring H, which is the lighter of the two springs, is first put under tension and acts as a buffer for the cover to retard its open ing movement, and during the final opening movement of the cover, the'spring H, which is the heavier of the two springs, is put under tension and thereby provides the power for throwing the cover to closed position when the operating means is released by removing the foot from the head F of the plunger F It is desirable to retard or cushion the closing movement of the cover, and for the accomplishment of this purpose, a plunger K is provided which cooperates with the controlling arm E The plunger K is vertically movable in a tube 70, which is embedded in the body A, and is actuated upwardly againstthe controlling arm E by means of the spring 70. The plunger K is preferably formed hollow to receive a mass of cotton waste or other lubricant-holding material 70 which contacts with the controlling arm E The spring a, through the plunger K and the controlling arm E cushions the closing movement of the cover, and in a n'ieasure, assists the operating means in the opening movement, thus making the parts operate easily, and with very little friction or noise.
The purposes of the invention may be carried out in other ways than by the precise construction set forth and this application is intended to cover any such modifications or departure from the specific disclosure as come within the fundamental features of the invention or of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A garbage container comprising a concrete body, a cover, a U-shaped tube embedded in said body, and actuating means movable in said tube and opcratively associated with the cover for opening it.
2. A garbage container comprising a con crete body, a cover, an actuating member fixedly connected to the cover, a U-shaped tube embedded in the body, and operating means movable in said tube and having engagement with said actuating member for opening the cover.
3. A garbage container comprising a body, a cover, and operating means including a tubular guideway, a fiexible shaft mounted on the body and movable endwise in said tubular guideway, said flexible shaft being ope-ratively associated with the cover for opening it.
4. A garbage container comprising a concrete body, a cover, and operating means lncludlng a tubular guideway, a flexible-- shaft arranged and movable endwise in said tubular guideway, the flexible shaft being operatively associated with the cover for opening it.
5. A garbage container comprising a concrete body, a cover, a U-shaped guideway in said body, a flexible shaft arranged in said guideway, a plunger movable in said guideway and having engagement at its lower end with said flexible shaft and cooperating at its upper end with the cover, and a depressiblc plunger located in the other end of said guideway and engaging the corresponding end of said flexible shaft.
6. A garbage container comprising a body of concrete, a cover, an actuating member connected with the cover, a U-shaped tube embedded in said body, a plunger located in one end of said tube and having engagement with said actuating member, a depressible plunger located in the opposite end of said tube, and a flexible shaft interposed between said plungers.
7 A garbage container comprising a body,
a cover, and operating means for the cover including a tl-shaped tube carried by the body, a flexible shaft movable endwise in the tube and operatively associated with the cover, a depressible plunger engaging one end of said flexible shaft, and a sleeve carried by said plunger and engaging the outer surface of said tube. 8. A garbage container comprising a body, a cover, a curved actuating member connected with the cover, and operating means including a vertically movable plunger engaging said actuating member and a flexible shaft movable endwise for operating said plunger.
9. A garbage container comprising a concrete body, a cover, a curved actuating member connected with the cover, a tube embedded insaid body, and a vertically movable plunger arranged in said tube and engaging said actuating member, said plunger consisting of a tubular member, lubricantabsorbing material carried by said member, and a roller contacting with the actuating member.
10. A garbage container comprising a concrete body, a cover, a controlling member connected with the cover, a vertically movable plunger arranged in said body and 00- operating with said controlling member, and a spring located beneath said plunger and acting to elevate the latter into engagement with the controlling member and thereby retard closing of the cover.
11. A garbage receptacle comprisingaconcrete body, a cover, a curved controlling rod fixedly connected to the cover, a tube embedded in said body, a plunger arranged in said tube and engaging said curved controlling rod and a spring located beneath said plunger and acting to elevate the latter into engagement with the controlling rod.
12. A garbage container comprising a concrete body, a cover hinged thereon, a pair of curved arms fixedly connected to the cover, one for actuating it and the other for controlling its movement, a U-shaped tube embedded in the body, operating means movable endwise in said tube and cooperating with said curved actuating arm, a vertical tube embedded in said body, and a spring actuated plunger arranged in said vertical tube and cooperating withsaid curved controlling arm.
13. A garbage container comprising a concrete body, a cover hinged to the body, a curved actuating arm fixedly connected to the cover, a 'U-shaped tube embedded in the body, and operating means movable endwise in said tube and engaging said curved actuating arm for elevating the cover.
14. A garbage container comprising a con crete body having a guideway therein, a movable cover, and operating means movable endwise in said guideway and cooperating with the cover to opeg it.
15. A garbage container comprising a con-' crete body having a U-shaped guideway therein, a movable cover, and operating means including a flexible shaft movable endwise in said guideway and cooperating with said cover to open it.
16. A garbage container comprising a body, a cover, a U-shaped tube mounted on the body, and actuating means movable in said tube and operatively associated with the cover for opening it.
17. A garbage container comprising a body, a cover, a Ushaped tube mounted on the body, and actuating means including a flexible shaft movable endwise in said'tube and operatively associated with the cover.
