Specification of Letters ZPatent.
Patented June 20,
Application filed May 25, 1921. 7 Serial no. 472,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corvallis,in the county of Benton and State of Oregon, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles and especially those adapted to receive garbage and has for its principal object the production of a device of this nature which is sanitary, simple and durable in construction, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed. I
With the above and numerous other objects in view the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing Figure 1 is an elevational view of the device showing same assembled and ready for use,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrow,
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical central section taken through the device,
Figure 1 is a section taken approximately on the line H of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary enlarged sectional view taken through the hopper ele ment.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates the can generally which consists of the cylindrical body 2 having an inturned flange 3 at its bottom for supporting the bottom closure 4: which is preferably of concavo-convex construction. This can 1 is supported in any suitable stand 5.
An inner receptacle 6 constructed of paraflin or wax paper preferably is situated interiorly of the can 1 and is provided with a mesh bottom 7 This inner receptacle 6 terminates a comparatively short distance from the top of the can 1 as shown clearly in Figure 3. This receptacle 6 is replaceable and will be discarded after having once been used.
The closure 8 is provided with the depending flange 9 which fits interiorly of the top portion of the can 1. The closure 8 is pro vided with an opening 10 over which is situated a hopper element 11 which may be of any preferred construction and in the present instance registersfwith an opening 13 in the floor or platform 14., The bottom portion of the hopper 1 1 is provided 'with a pan of oppositely disposed folded portions 15 forming races for thejplate 16 which is slidably mounted therein, A like member 17 is provided for receiving the end, of this plate 16 as shown clearly in Figure 3.. The
outer end of the plate 16 is providedwith a turned-up flange 19" to which is fixed one end of the flexiblecable member 19. Beduced extensions are formed on the flange 18 for receiving the end loops of the coil springs 21. The other ends of these" coils springs 21 are attached to the closure'i'8 as shown at 23 in Figures l and 5. 'Inorder to protect the coil springs/'21 I have provided a casing-in the form of-a'sleeve24 one of which is disposed upon opposite sides of the hopper member 11 for encasing the springs 21. A band 25 is disposed around the outer periphery of the can 1 adjacent its upper end and is held in place by a folded flange of the can or in any other suitable manner. This band 25 supports a bracket 26 in which is journaled a pulley 27. A supplementary bracket 28 extends vertically from the bracket 26 and has journaled therein a pulley 29. Another pulley 30 is journalled in a bracket 31 fixed to the can 1 a distance below the bracket 26. The cable member 19 passes over the pulleys 29 and 27' an opening 3 1 in the floor or platform 15.
As the rod 23 is lifted upwardly it will pull upon the cable element 19 thus opening or sliding the plate 16 so that the hopper 11 will be in communication. with the interior of the can 1. During this operation the coil springs 21 will haveobeen expanded and as soon as the rod 23 is released they will bring the plate 16 to a closed position. An aperture 35 is providedin the plate 16 and when this plate 16 is in a closed position this aperture 35 will register with a pipe 36 which extends exteriorly of the can 1 and terminates a short distance above a receptacle 37 The swill or garbage is first placed in the hopper 11 and the water or liquid is allowed to drain therefrom through the pipe 36 into the receptacle 35. After this has been accomplished the rod 33 will be actuated and the plate 16 will be moved to an open position as has been explained so as to allow the comparatively dry swill or garbage to pass into, the interior of the removable receptacle 6. V
A pair of bars 38 are suitably attached to the flange 9 of the closure 8 so as 'to depend therefrom and they are provided with the right angularly extensions 39 which are adapted to fit between the cylindrical body portion 2 of the can 1 and the receptacle 6 thus keeping a portion of this receptacle 6 away from the interior periphery of the can 1 whereby fingers may be placed in engagement with the receptacle 6 when it is desired to remove same from the can 1.
Although I have described the above receptacle in conjunction with garbage it will be readily understood that there are many other usages which may be made thereof which fall Within the, scope of this invention. Numerous changes in form, construcion, and in the minor details of parts may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1 In combination, a can, a closure there- I for provided with an opening, a hopper fixed to the closure and registering with the opening therein, a plate slidably mounted in the hopper and provided with an aperture, a pipe situated in the can and registering at one end with the aperture in the plate when the same is in a closed position and the other end of the pipe leading to the ex terior of the can, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination, a can, a closure therefor provided with an opening, a hopper fixed to the closure and registering with its opening, a plate slidably mounted in the hopper and provided with an aperture, means for actuating the plate to an open position, and means for normally holding the plate in a closed position and a pipe situated in the can having one end registering with the aperture of the plate when it is in a closed position and the other end of the pipe situated interiorly of the can.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
