I w H. LESTER. V CASE FOR CIGARETTES AND THE U KE.

CASE FOR CIGARETTE S AND THE LIKE.
Specification of nearest.
Application filed June 16,
To all whomit may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Lns'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Case for Cigarettes and the like, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to a case for small articles such as cigarettes, etc., and it is con cerned primarily with a novel arrangement and construction of parts such that an intermediate leaf is provided behind which is space for the reception of thin articles such as photographs, identification cards, etc.
An exempliiication of this invention in its preferred form is shown in the drawing in the manner following:
' Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the case with its covers opened;
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the intermediate leaf swung from its normal position to expose a photograph and identification card that may be carried in the case; and
Fig. 3 is a view similarto Fig. 2 withthe intermediate leaf swung to its normal. position to conceal the photograph and card.
The present case comprises a pair of hinged covers A and B each suitably dished to provide between them a compartment in which small articles may be received when the covers are closed. These covers have a pivotal connection as at 5 at which point also are hinged a tongue C and a leaf D that is normally held against and within the cover A. Spring means (not shown) are employed to urge the covers to open position and to hold the tongue G against the intermediate leaf 1), this action resulting also in the latter part being held normally against the cover As spring means both for opening the covers of a case and for actuating a tongue therebetween to a desired position has heretofore been known, it is not thought necessary to illustrate the same herein.
The parts which are special to this invention are associated with the intermediate leaf and cover A. As appears in Fig. 1, the leaf is formed on its side facing the cover with a frame 6 in which are provided openings 7 and 8 so as to expose photographs or other material which may be retained with- Patent Patented fin 8,
1921. Serial N0. 477,878.
in the frame. The parts carried by the frame would not ordinarily appear to view as they normally face the'cover A, and lie adjacent thereto due to the action of the spring tongue 0, but whenever desired the intermediate leaf may be pulled back to expose its frame side. To facilitate this action, the free edge of the leaf may be notched as at 9, permitting the finger nail to grasp the same conveniently at this point. Into the same notch may also project a spring catch 10 which is carried by the cover A to engage with the cover B when the case is closed.
The cover A is further designed to retain therein one or more cards 11 such, for instance, as appears in Fig. 2. As a convenient means for holding such a card in place spring clips 12'may be provided within the cover permitting the edges of a card to be clamped thereunder. With this construction the intermediate leaf may be pulled back without any likelihood of the card dropping out or becoming dislodged.
From the preceding description, I would have it noted that the present invention is characterized by the usual dished covers having a spring hinge connection therebetween, but in association with the case so formed is an intermediate leaf that is normally held in a definite position against one of the covers by means of a spring tongue, this leaf serving as a mounting for photographs or other desired matter, and the ad" jacent cover being also formed to carry a card or other display medium.
I claim:
1. In combination with a case having a pair of dished covers connected by'a spring hinge, a leaf swingingly mounted between the covers, spring means for normally holding the leaf against one of the covers, and a mounting on the leaf adjacent said cover for carrying a thin article, the said leaf being also provided with a mounting for a similar article, substantiallyv as described.
2. In combination with a case having a pair of dished covers connected by a spring hinge, a leaf swi'ngingly mounted between the covers and adapted to lie within one of them, means for normally holding the leaf within said cover, and a spring catch on said cover adapted to engage with the other and movable toward the leaf, there being v nee anal a notch in the leaf edge'adjacent said catch within which the catch may move, substantially as described.
8. In combination with a case having a pair of dished covers connected by a spring hinge, a'leaf swingingly mounted between the covers and adapted to lie within one of them, a tongue mounted between the covers and having spring means associated therewith for normally pressing it against the leaf to thereby maintain the latter element within its associated cover, and a mounting on the leaf adjacent said cover for carrying a thin article, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a case having a pair of dished covers connected by a spring hinge, means on one cover 'forretaining
