E. HELM. CLASP FOR GARTERS, ETC. APPLICATION FILED SEPT- 7, 1921.

CLASP FOR GARTERS, ETC.
naaa soi.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pat ig mt gd A 1 1922 Application filed September 7, 1921. Serial No. 499,075. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERASMUS HELM, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Tuxedo Park, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented new and.
useful Improvements in Clasps for Garters, Etc, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garters.
The object of the invention is to provide a garter, embodying among other characteristics, means for applying the garter to the Wearers drawers and stocking to support the latter without wrapping or tying the elastic material about the wearers leg to the latters discomfort and without interfering with blood circulation of the user of the garter.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, pro portion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures:
Figure 1 illustrates the complete invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged front view of the upper clasp.
Figure 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the upper clasp.
Figure 4 is an enlarged top plan view of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 5 indicates a piece of elastic material of a suitable character and length to the lower end of which a stocking or sock engaging clasp 6 of any suitable character may be secured in any suitable manner, the clasp shown being one of the double clasp variety.
A clasp A is secured to the upper end of the elastic material 5 in any suitable manner. This clasp is of peculiar formation and comprises two jaws.
The free edges of the parts 9 of the jaws a and b are preferably serrated to provide teeth 12 with the teeth of the respective jaws interengaging to. take a firm hold on the wearers drawers. To insure this firm connection the jaws of the clasp A with the wearers drawers, open ended socketslli are struck up from or formed on the inner face of each part 8, to receive the ends of the springs lit encircling the hinge pintle 11, as shown. This form of clasp provides a hol: low interior which confines that part ofthe wearers drawers pinched between the jaws of the clasp.
By simply grasping the clasp A along the web portions 10 as shown in Figure 1 and forcing the jaws a and b to throw their parts 8 toward each other against the action of the springs 1 1, the toothed edges of the parts 9 of the jaws are separated to receive the wearers garment and by placing the separated toothed edges of the jaws against the wearers drawers, and releasing the hold on the jaws, the springs 14 will cause the toothed edges of the jaws to snap over the wearers garment and hold against accidental disconnection.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the upper clasp is composed of two substantially Ushaped sides abutting, providing a hollow body open at its ends only when the clasp'is closed. It will also be seen that I provide a garment supporter designed to overcome the inconvenience occasioned in the use of tightbands usually employed in the makeup of garters, sleeve supporters, etc. It will also be appreciated that my improved clasp is positive in operation and it is to be understood that its use is not limited to garters, and sleeve holders, but that my improved clasp may be used wherever a clasp of the present character may be serviceable.
1. A garment supporter comprising a strip of elastic material, a clasp secured to one end of the elastic material, and another clasp secured to the other end of the elastic mate rial and consisting of a pair of substantially U-shaped members hingedly connected together to form a substantially hollow body, the jaws having inter-engaging teeth and springs mountedwithin the hollow body and having engagement with the hinging connection of the jaws to maintain the teeth of the jaws normally in interengaging relation.
2. A garment supporter comprising aflexible element, a clasp secured to one end thereof and another clasp at the other end of the said flexible element, the second clasp into tw sections having side: Walls and pala allel front and rear valls -the ai cl ections having hinged coniiectidn with icli 'othe'r and having interengaging teethgqn; thehabut: Y ting edges of each section, the said clasp.
