critics,
WILLIAMI FRANCIS MITCHELL, 0F CX JIFTON, HEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR Q1 ONE-HALF T0 FRANK R. iLLEN, 0F PAS$J2XIC, NEW JERSEY. 1
\ ennasn CELLAR.
Specification of Letters yatent.
Application filed June as, 1920. Serial No. 391,950.
T 0 ad! whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WiLmAM FRANCIS MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Qlifton, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Grease Cellars, of which the following is a specification.
My inventlon relates to improvements in grease cellars and the object of my invention is to provide a simpleand convenient grease cellar for the purpose of lubricating axles and the like. I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanyin% drawing in which:.
igure 1 is a sectional view of-the grease cellars applied to anaxle; and
Figure. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved grease cellar is adapted to v be applied to the underside of an axle at the bearingor journal and is supported in any suitable manner. It includes a case 1 hav- ,ing a bottom and side walls and an open front in which is set a box 2-which is supported by the bottom of the case 1 and is open at the top and in which the grease is till:
contained. Within the box 2 I provide a plate 3 supported by a suitable spring stand adapted to force upwardly a cake or block 5 of grease or lubricant which is covered with an apertured cover 6 resting against the axle 7. The box 2 is held within the through the lugs 16 and when it is desired.
to permit the spring 4 to operate, these rods 13, 14- are withdrawn.
()n the underside of the plate 3 I preferably provide a rod 17 extending throughv the bottom of the case and the box to serve as a tell tale whereby the quantity of grease one/the plate may be readily determinedl without bpening the device bymercly oblow the bottom ofthe case. Suitable gauge marks may be used on the rod 17 when desired.
The box 2 being removed from the case 1, the plate 3 is depressed and held in its depressed position by the rods 13 and 14 engaging the lugs 16 and the grease or like lubricant in solid form, cut or molded to fit within the box 2, is placed upon the plate, and the cover 6 is positioned within the box 2 upon the said lubricant. The box 2 is then placed Within the case 1 and the bolt 9 inserted through the ears l0 and the lu 11 and secured in position by the nut 12. l hen it is desired to make use of the lubricant, the rods 16 are withdrawn, thus releasing the sprin 4 which forces the lubricant u against tie perforated cover 6 where it serves to lubricate the axle 7.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim is:
1. Ina device of the character described, the combination of an open front case having a bottom and side walls, a closed box therein resting on' thebottom of the case having an open top and adaptedto con- .tain a cake of lubricant and means for se-- a platc in the box, and adapted to sup ort a lubricant apcrturcd lugs on said pate, rods adapted to engage said lugs to hold the platc in a depressed position, a spring below the plate and adapted to press the same upward, an car on the case, and a log on the box and a bolt inserted through the ear and the lug to secure the box in position.
Signed at Clifton. in the county of Passaic and State oi New Jersey this 15 day of June, A. D. 1921).
WILLIAM FRANCIS MITCHELL.
