Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may, concern;
Be it known that we, CARL B. PRITCHARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Everson, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, and GEORGE T. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Connellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and-Improved Car-Wheel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a car wheel constructed and arranged to form a receptacle to carry an increased supply of lubricating grease; to provide means for readily and quickly supplying and automatically delivering the lubricant from the receptacle provided; and to economize the construction while increasing the carrying capacity for the lubricant.
One embodiment of the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure l is a side View of a Wheel constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross section taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail View, on an enlarged scale and in perspective, of the plunger for forcing the lubricant from the containing receptacle.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the receptacle 9 is cast integrally with the wheel, forming part of the structure of one of the spokes 10 when a spider form of wheel is used. If a solid web wheel is employed it will be understood that the receptacle 9- is cast integrally with the web. In both events there is formed in the outer end of the receptacle a boss 11, which boss forms a guide for holding in position the end of a spiral spring 12.
The receptacle 9 is open one side of the wheel and to the side thereof removed from the flange 13. On the side of the casing adjacent the front opening are cast lugs 14, 14. The lugs 14 register with lugs 15 formed on a cover 16 used to close the receptacle 9. The receptacle 9 is constructed with straight parallel sides to form guides for a plunger 17. The plunger 17 is extended normally toward the hub 18 of the wheel by means of the spiral spring 12. It is to hold the spring 12 in desired relation to the plunger 17 that the latter is provided with is supplied thereto by removing the cover 16, lifting or removing the plunger 17 and spring 12, and then packing the receptacle 9 with lubricating grease or other suitable material. If the plunger 17 and spring 12 have been removed they are replaced, compressing the spring 12 to its uttermost limit and inserting the plunger above the body of the grease or lubricant. The cover 16 is then replaced over the receptacle 9, when the nuts 22 are screwed upon the bolts 23 to lock the cover firmly on the receptacle. It will be noted that this operation has not necessitated the removal of the wheel or disturbed the same in any way whatsoever. It will also be noticed that due to the possibilities of increasing. the size of the receptacle 9 practically unlimited quantities of lubricant may be carried by a wheel thus constructed.
Any suitable packing may be employed to close the passage between the edge of the receptacle 9 and the cover 16. It will also be understood that any suitable device may be employed for maintaining the plunger 17 in raised position preliminary to the placement of the cover 16 on the receptacle 9.
While we have shown and described one only of the holes 20, we wish it understood we may employ a series of such holes or one elongated orifice to deliver the required amount of grease to the axle.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A car wheel having a box upon and integral with the hub of said wheel and having a passage in open communication with said box and bearing opening of said hub, said box havlng a full side lateral opening; a cover for said lateral opening; a loose removable plunger adapted for insertion within said box to be guided by the walls thereof; a loose removable frusto-conical spiral spring adapted to be compressed to a flat plane, the convolutions whereof are adapted to pass one within the other when said spring is compressed; and seating deof two subscribing witnesses.
