THE GRAPHIC CD. PHaT0'LlTH-39& I PA PLACE PATENT Jonn A. GEER, 'oE MooDUs, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT lN WHEELS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,748, dated December 15, 1874; application filed November 23,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. GEEK, of Moodus, in the county of Middlesex and State 'of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hubs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hubs; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of devices, which will be more fully described hereafter. I
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
(it represents a solid cast hub, which has formed around its periphery the sockets c for receiving the ends of the spokes. Into this hub is made the opening d to receive the outer end of the axle, which opening does not extend entirely through the hub, as is usual, but is closed at the outer end or side, as shown, so as not to require a cap, nut, or any other device at this point. Into this opening in the hub is placed the loose box 0 to receive the axle, which box has a flange formed around its outer end, and holes through its sides, so as to let the lubricating oil or substance pass through to the axle. Upon the axle is formed the flange g, which abuts up against the end of the box, and over the axle is passed the collar z having an internal screw-thread for screwing on the inner end of the hub. This collar catches back of the flange g, and thus binds the axle and hub together, so that the axle cannot be withdrawn. Over the outer end of the hub is passed the flat plate j, which is clamped up against the end of the sockets c by the nut l for the purpose of holding the spokes in position. Inside of the hub, around the outer end of the box, is formed an oilchamber of sufllcient size to hold oil enough to last several days.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination of the hub a, closed at its outer end, and provided with an oil-chamber,
the loose box a, flanged axle, screw-cap i, and clamping device j l for the spokes, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of November, 1874.
JOHN A. GEER.
