Vehicle and axle and thrust bearings - An easily removable axle box for a locomotive driving axle comprises a U-shaped part 10 the opening between the legs being at its upper end and sufficiently wide to pass the axle. A hearing block 17 in the opening engages the legs by adjustable tapered wedges 22. The brass 17<a> which may be integral with the block 17 extends down the sides of the axle 15, a lug 20 on the brass engaging a recess 21 in the box 10 to prevent relative axial movement thereof. The brass 17<a> is axially secured to the block 17 by a rib 46. The bearing block 17 or brass 17<a> may be removed without lifting the vehicle or lowering the axle after the bearing has been relieved from the tension of the spring 27 and after the wedges 22 have been removed. A wedge device 32. 33 may be fitted between one arm of the box 10 and the hornblock 14. The outer faces of the block 17 and the box 10 which take the end thrust from the wheel hub 36 may have babbit facings. The axle is lubricated by a cake of grease 38 in a three sided cellar 41 and which is pressed by a spring 39 against a perforated plate 37 beneath the axle. The inner side of the cellar 41 is of trough shape and contains packing 42. A rod 43 indicates the consumption of grease.
