Description

v M. G. DARLING.
PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 18. I922.
Patented July 18, 1922?.

Application filed April 18 1922.
To aZZ'wiwm it may concern Be it known that I, MARY G. DARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at ii ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to pin point protectors, and locks therefor, and it contemplates the provision of a device that may be quickly and easily applied upon the point of a pin for protecting the user of a pin. from injury especially where the pin is employed for the purpose of attaching several sheets of paper together.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a device capable of being adjusted upon the pointed end of a pin where by when the pin is used to secure several sheets of paper together, the possibility of casual displacement of the pin from the papers is effectually precluded.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a device for protecting the point and looking a pin to a sheet or sheets of paper and being so constructed and ar ranged that repeated use of the protector and lock is assured.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating my novel device as the same appears when stamped and before the spring clip portions are properly adjusted for use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective view illustrating my novel. device as properly adjusted upon the end of a pin.
Figure 3 is a view illustrating the device when the spring clip portions are properly positioned and showing-how the same appears when looking down into the same.
Figure 4; is a longitudinal sectional view showing the construction of the device with one of the clip portions thereof removed.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings. I
In Figure 1, T. illustrate the blank device as the same appears when stamped from suitable flexible material, and the said device comprises the rounded body portion 1, and extending from the body portion and Specification of Letters Patent.

formed integral therewith arethe lower portions 2 of the clip members. These clipmenibers, preferably three in number, diverge at proper angles from the center circular portion 1, and. the said clip members are bent inwardly at 3 at which portion they are provided with the teeth or gripping edges as illustrated. The said members are further provided with the portions 4 and at the ends of these portions 4, I again provide the inwardly bent and toothed gripping edges 5, and on their extreme ends the spring members are provided with the portions 6, that in turn are provided with the head or roll 6.
After the device has been stamped in the manner just set forth, the spring clip portions are then bent toward each other so as to form the device into the configuration shown in Figures 2 and 3, particularly. The device thus formed produces the bowl or point confining end 1 into which the point 8 seats and when so positioned the said point of the pin 7 will not only be precluded from causing injury to the person handling papers, but because of the positions the members of the device assume with respect to the pin when in use the pin will be prevented from pulling out of the protector and locking device.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that due to its construction, the device may be quickly and easily manipulated upon the end of the pin and a novice may readily ar- Patented July 18', 1922.
range the device and hence the same may be said to be fool proof.
I would distinctly have it understood that the device is to be formed of spring clip material that will grip and firmly hold the pin and so constructed and arranged that repeated use of the device is assured.
The device may either be shipped and sold in the blank form shown in Figure 1, or may be sold read for use as illustrated in the remaining views of the drawings, and in order to assist the teeth or roughened ends 3 and 5, to firmly grip the pin, I may when desired magnetize the device.
It will be manifest that the invention is quite simple in construction and inexpensive to produce, and comprises no complicated elements that it will get out of order after a short period of use, and because of its capacity for repeated use the initial expense to a purchaser is practically the only one necessary 15 cut, is:
Such changes in the configuration and arrangement oi the device ma be made as fairly -fall Within the scope oi the appended claims, and in this connection I Would have it understood that I do not Wish to be lin1- ited to the exact construction of the eleQ ments as illustrated.
I Would further have it understood that my novel device may also be used upon any pointed article of the nature of a pin, as a protector, as for example anail or the like. i i l Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-P t' As a new article of manufacture, comprising a single piece of spring material bent upon itself to form a pin point receiving body portion and having-its lower end closed, upwardly reaching spring clip portions extending from the closed'end; said upwardly reaching portions being crnnped
