{Specification of Lett eis i'ateiit. Y Pgtentdgul 18 11922 Application 'filed" April 4, 19221; ;Seria1 3N6. 54,55,442.-
Be it known -that .L;,HowAnoL. Formica,
a citizenof the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Blair andState of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Shuttle Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shuttles for weaving machines and more particularly to thread cutting mechanism therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for cutting the thread known as the filling when excessive tension is placed thereon incident to the catching of knots or otherwise, thereby avoiding breakage or tearing out of the ends of the warp.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as'the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may beinade within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings 2-.-
Figure 1 represents a plan view of one end of a weaving shuttle with this improved attachment shown applied.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2, and
Fig. at is a detail perspective View of the cutting device constituting this invention.
In the embodiment illustrated, a weaving shuttle 1 of ordinary construction is shown having the usual bobbin chamber 2 and thread clamping tensioning plates 3 and 4c held in yieldable engagement by coiled springs 5 and 6 positioned between the outer faces of the plates and the opposed side walls of the bobbin chamber. The shuttle is also provided with the usual thread exit eye 8 which opens transversely through one side wall of the shuttle, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 and through which the thread T passes after leaving the tensioning plates as is shown clearly in Figures 1 and 2.
The device 10 constituting this invention is made in the form of a lever fulcrumed on an upright pintle or rod 12 mounted in one side wall of the shuttle, and is preferably composed of a piece of wire bent intermediate itsgends into a series of: coils 11 ito form a bearing through which the pintle 12 passes. The wire leads from these coils. inopposite directions -to'. tliie rearend 13 thereof extends betweenthecoils of thespringt and the side of thewshuttle carrying the thread eXitLeyeS. An obliquely disposed portion 14 connects the end 13 with the coiled spring carrying portion as is shown clearly in Fig. 1 to provide for the proper positioning of said end 13 relatively to the tension plate of the thread so that when a knot is formed in the thread and passes between said plates or the thread becomes caught in any way, excessive tension'will be exerted on the thread, thereby forcing plate 3 toward the shuttle wall against the tension of its spring 5 which will operate to move the lever arm 13 and swing the lever, thereby causing a cutter 15 carried by the other end thereof to swing into the path of the thread T between the tensioning device and the exit eye and thus sever the thread at this point, preventing breakage of the parts or tearing of the ends of the warp. I
The cutter 15 is constructed as shown in Fig. 4 from a plate of steel 16 and has a beveled or sloping cutting edge 17 adapted to pass under and sever the thread when the cutter is swung inwardly in the manner above described.
This cutter 15 may be attached to the front end of the wire by any suitable means such as soldering or the like.
It will be obvious that this device may be attached to shuttles already in use by simply forming in one wall of the shuttle a suitable chamber to receive the pintle 12 which forms the fulcrum for the lever.
I claim 2- 1. The combination with a weaving shuttle having thread engaging jaws and a thread exit eye; of a thread cutter mounted therein between said jaws and eye, said cutter having an arm positioned to be actuated by one of said jaws to throw the cutter into cutting engagement with the thread when excessive tension is placed on the thread.
2. The combination with a weaving shuttle having thread tensioning jaws and a thread exit eye; of a thread cutter mounted therein between said jaws and eye, said out ter being adapted to swing laterally into the path of the thread for cutting it when excessive tension is placed on the thread.
3. The combination with a weaving shuteerie.
. HOWARD LEROY ronivnn or Armenia, rnnivsvrlvaiv'mtle having thread tensioning aws and a thread exit eye; 01 a lever fulcrumed inter mediate its ends between said jaws and eye, a cutter carried by one end of said lever, and the other extended into position to be engaged by one of said aws whereby excessive lateral movement of said jaw will operate to swing said lever and move the knife into the path of the thread for cutting it.
a. The combination with a weaving shuttle having thread tensioning jaws and a thread exit eye; of a thread cutter mounted between said jaws and eye, and comprising a lever composed of a piecev of wire coiled intermediate its ends and having one end ex-
