Application filed March 26, 1919. Serial No. 285,235.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTONIO ARIco, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttles, of which the following is aspeciication.
One object of my invention is to provide a shuttle for power looms and which will be so constructed as to provide an even tension on the thread as the shuttle passes across the race of the loom.
Another object is to so construct my improved shuttle that the thread from the bobbin therein can be quickly placed in a position to extend through the tension means and can be quickly released from the tension means.
A -still further obj ect is to firmly hold the bobbin within the shuttle and to provide means whereby the bobbin can be quickly inserted and removed.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I
attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a top 4plan-view of my improved shuttle,

Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view of a portion of my shuttle with certain of the elements removed.
Referring to the drawings, 6 represents the elongated body portion of the shuttle having a central cavity 7 and a slot 8 in its bottom communicating with said cavity 7. The top 9 of the body portion 6 is provided with two lateral cavities 10A and 11 which communicate at their inner ends with the central cavity 7 The central cavity 7 provides a space for a bobbinA 12 having the yarn or thread 13 wound thereon in the usual manner.
A hole 14 extends through the side 15 of the body portion 6into the cavity 10 and provides an outlet passage for the yarn 13, as clearly shown in Fig. l.
Two lugs 16 and 17 project from the side walls af the cavity l0 and are spaced apart to provide a guideway 18 for the yarn 13 in passing from the bobbin l2 to the hole 14.
A threaded rod 19 extends through the body portion 6 and through a sleeve 20; said sleeve being positioned onA the bottom of the cavity l0. The rod 19 has amut 21 screwed thereon at its bottom and positioned within a recess 22 in the bottom of the body portion 6. The upper end of the rod 19 is provided with an eyelet 23, said eyelet bearing against the top of the sleeve 20.
A pivot pin 24 extends through the'eyelet 23 and through two depending ears 25 on a plate 26. The ears 25 are positioned between the opposite ends of the plate 26, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and a coiled spring 27- is interposed between the bottom of the end portion 28 of the plate 26 and the bottom of the cavity l0. The spring 27 is o-perative to move the end portion 28 of the plate upwardly on the pivot pin 24 as an axis and thereby movethe end portion 29 of said plate 26 downwardly.
A strip 30 of long pile fabric orthe like isl secured to the end surface of the end portion 29 and has its fibers 31 extending downwardly and adapted to intermesh with fibers 32 ofanother strip 33 of pile fabric or the like which vis secured to the bottom of the cavity 10. It will thus be seen that by pressing downwardly on the .portion 28 of the plate 26 that the fibers 31 and 32 will be lseparated and when thus separated the yarn 13 can be placed therebetween and the end drawn or threaded through the hole 14.
To 4facilitate this operation, theplate 26 has a notch 34 in its side so that the thread can be looped under the portion between the notch vand the edge 35 ofthe end portion 29 ofthe plate 26. In passing back and forth across the loom race, the shuttle will drag the yarn 13 through the hole 14 and between the fibers 31 and 32.y Thus tension will be l placed upon the yarn. The fibersv 31 and 32 thus form fibrous jaws between which the yarn 13 must travel before passing out of the hole 14.
In order to remove the plate 26, rod 19 and spring 27, it is merely necessary to remove the nut 21 when the entire structure can be lifted out of the body portion 6. The top surfaces of the lugs 16 and 17 are positioned slightly below the top of the body portion 6 and form a stop to limit the downward movement of the. portion 29 of the plate 26. I
The bobbin 12 has a stem 36 which ares toward its free end. This stem 36 is adapted to be positioned within a socket provided by the recess l1 and rests upon a felt pad 37. A plate 38 has an end portion 39 -which is curved in cross section, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, and is adapted to embrace the upper portion of the stem 36. This end portion 39 fo-llows the contour of the stem 36, as clearly shown in Fig. '2. The plate 3S is pivotally connected by a pin 40 to the top of a rod 41; said vrod being threaded at its lower end and provided with a nut 42, the nut being positioned within a recess 43 in the bottom of the body portion 6. The plate 38 has an opposite end portion A44 which overhangs the pivot pin 40 and a coiled spring 45 is positioned between the bottom of the end portion 44 and the bottom of the cavity 11. The spring 45 Y thus tends to hold the end portion 39 in clamping contact with the stem 36 of the bobbin. Thus the bobbin is firmly held within the cavity 7 but may be quickly and easily removed or replaced by pressing downwardly upon the end portion 44 of the spiate es.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction'set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is; i
1. A shuttle having a bobbin therein, said bobbin having an outwardly flared stem, said shuttle having a recess providing a socket of the contour of said outwardly flared stem of the bobbin; and a plate having a portion for clamping said stein at a position inwardly from the end whereby the bobbin is held against longitudinal movement; substantially as described.
2. A shuttle having a bobbin therein, said bobbin having an outwardly flared stem; said shuttle having a recess providing a socket of the contour of said bobbin stem; a plate,
having a portion curved in cross section fol-V lowing the longitudinal contour of the Harstem; and means for holding said plate tion; a platepivotally connected to said rod;
a pair of jaws respectively connected to said plate and body portion and between whichthe yarn must pass prior to passing out of the shuttle; and means for automatically moving said jaws toward each other; substantially as described.
4. A shuttle including a body portion; a rod detachably connected to said body portion; a plate pivotally connected to said rod; a pair of fibrous jaws respectively connected to said plate and body portion and between which the yarn must pass prior to passing out of theshuttle; means for automatically moving said jaws toward each other; and means providing a stop for limit-` ing the extent of intermesh of the fibers of each jaw; substantially as described.
5. A shuttle including a body portion; a rod detachably connected to said body portion; a' plate pivotally connected to said rod; a pair of jaws respectively connected to said, plate and body portion and between which the yarn must pass prior to passing out of the shuttle; and means for automatically moving said jaws toward each other; said body portion having a hole in its side through which the yarn passes after passing between said jaws; said plate having a notch to facilitate the threading of said yarn throughsaid hole and the introduction of as described.
6. A shuttle having a bobbin therein, said bobbin having alaring stem; a plate having a portion curved in cross section and following the contour of said flaring stem; means providing a pivoted mounting for said plate; a spring operative upon said late for moving said portion into clamping engagement with said stem; and means providing a resilient pad forming a seat for said stem oppositely disposed to said plate portion; substantially as described.
