lowing is a specification.
This invention consists o f-improvements in wrenches and especially that type of wrench which is provided with serrated or roughened jaws and is chiefly used to screw up or unscrew pipes, cylindrical rods and the like. The invention maybe adapted with equal facility to new wrenches, or to old wrenches of the type referredto; in which the screw or nut, usually provided, or either of them, are worn out or broken.
The objects of my invention are to provide a cheap and strong wrench, when the invention is applied to a newwvrench, and to enable old wrenches, the screws or nuts of which have been stripped or broken, (and which otherwise would be discarded or require to be provided with a new jaw) to be repaired and re-used. V
Inthe accompanying drawings I illustrate a wrench embodying the invention in the preferred form, I 1
Fig. lbeing a side elevation of the tool, and
Fig. 2 a view at right angles to Fig. 1. j
The drawing illustrates the preferred form of the invention when embodied inthe construction of a new wrench. In this construction a handle 1, similar to the usual handle portion of ordinary wrenches, is, provided and is formed with or has afiixed to it at its one extremity, the fixed jaw 2 of the wrench. 3 is the member or part which, in the case of an ordinary wrench, rotatably carries the adjusting nut for the movable aw.
The part or member 3 is hinged or pivoted at 4 to the handle portion 1 underneath the jaw 2, as is usual, and it has an extension 5 which loosely embraces the handle portion 1, as indicated at 6. 7 is the ordinary spring which at one end is attached to the handle 1 and at the other end engages with the extension 5 and serves through said extension 5, at the one side of the handle, resiliently to hold the part 3 in place. 8 is the ordinary spring which is fixed at the one end to the other side of the handle and at its other end engages with the part 3 and serves, at the other side of the handle, resiliently to vhold the part 3 in place.
9 is the other and adjustable jaw which is shown constructed integral with an ext8I1S1011 01 part 10, which, in the case of an ordinary wrench, is the part which is screwthreaded to engage with the adjusting nut. In my construction both screw-thread and nut are dispensed with, and consequently the sides of the part 3 do not require to be provided with the slots for the nut. As in existing wrenches, the member or part 3 is hollow or has an opening 11 through which the extension orpart 10 passes, and in which it is adapted to move up and down in adjusting the distance between the jaws, as required. I
For the purpose of adjusting the movable jaw 9 relative to the fixed jaw 2, the extension 10 of theformer is provided with one or a plurality of rows of holes 12, which, as shown, are equally spaced apart'inall of the rows. In the drawing it is shown provided with two' parallel rows of suchholes, those of the. one row beingstage'ered in relation to those of the other, and the distance between theholes of each row being the same. By providing twoor more rows ofholes 12, and staggering the same, as shown, it ensures a finer adjustment of the relative positions of the jaws 2, 9.
13, 14, 1 5, 16, are four holes formed through both sides of the part 3, which are adapted to coincide with the holes 12 in dif ferent positions of thejaw 9. The distance between the two holes 13, 15, which are adapted to coincide with the one row of holes, 12. is one and one halftimes the distance between the holes 12 of each row, and the other two holes 14, 16, which are adapted to coincide with the other row of holes 12, are also positioned one and one half times the distance between the holes 12 of each row. The hole 14 is positioned in advance of the hole 13, in the direction of the rows of holes 12, by a distance equal to one quarter of the distance between the holes 12 of each row. In like manner the hol 16 is in advance of the hole 15 by a distance equal to one quarter of the distance between the holes 12 of each row. As will be understood on reference to the drawing, by providing the two rows of holes 12, and positioning the holes 13, 14, 15, 16, as shown and described, the distance between the jaws 9, 2, can be opening thereof.
varied by a distance equal to one quarter the distance between the holes 12 of each row.
In order to retain the aw 9 in any desired position I. providea pin 17 which is preferably attached by means of a, chain 18 to the end of the extension 10.
1'3, 14:, 15, 16, and any one of the holes 12, which may coincide with any one of'said h l s 13, 14, 15, 16, as is clearly shown in the drawi g... ,1 i v v. I
pin will pass through the slots provided for the nut in thesides of the part 3 and engage in one of the holes in the extension. In such construction the pin will engage with the top of the slot or that side nearest the jaws andso'operate to prevent further VVhat I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is -l. :Awrench comprising a handle portion provided with a fixed-jaw, and a movable j aw, the latter having an extension in which a row of holes is formed'in the direction of its length, apart pivotally connected to the fixed jaw and: having an opening through which the movable jaw extension passes and moves in a direction parallel to the handle portion, and also having a holeiwhich passes through thesides theredf and'communicates with said opening, and-apin which is adapted to engage in said hole and also in any one of the row' of holes'in the'mov'able jaw extension to retain themovable aw in different positions relative to the fixed jaw.
. 2. A wrench comprising a handle portion provided with a fixed jaw, and a movable jaw, the latter having an extension in which a plurality of rows of holes are formed in the direction of its length, a part pivotally connectedto the fixed jaw and having an op'eningthrough which the movablejaw extension'passes and'moves in a direction par- The pin 17 is adapted to pass throughany of the holes allel to the handle portion, and also havin a plurality of holes which pass through t e sides thereof and communicate with said opening, and a pin which is adapted to engage in any one of said last-mentioned holes and also in any one of the holes in the movable j awextension' to retain the movable jaw in different positions relative to the fixed Jaw i 3. A Wrench comprising a handle portion provided with a fixed jaw, and a movable jaw, the latter having an extension in which a plurality of rows of holes are formed in the direction of its length and are staggered in adjacent rows, apart pivotally connected to the fixed jaw 'andhaving an opening through which the movable jaw extension passes and also having a plurality ofholes which pass through the sides thereof andcommunicate with s'aid opening, certain of said holes being adapted to be placed in coincidence with the holes of each row o fholes 1n the movable jaw extension, and a pin which is adapted to engage in any one of the holes in the part connected to the fixed'jaw and also in any one of the holes in the movable; jaw extension to retain the movable aw in different positions relative to the fixed aw. Y
4. A wrench comprising a handle portion 7 tension, and a pinwhichis adapted toengage in any one of said staggered holes and also 1n any oneof the rows of holes in the movable aw extensionto retain the movable jaw in different positions relative to the I In testimony whereof I have signed my name to'this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
