Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 20, 1920. Serial No. 360,240.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO S. KALLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tap and Reamer Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chucks, and the primaryobject of the invention is to provide an improved chuck especially adapted for holding taps and reamers, but which is capable of holding other tools, and which is so constructed that taps of various sizes may be held.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved tap embodying an adjustable disc having a plurality of different sized square recesses formed therein, any one of which is adapted to be brought into alignment with the tap receiving opening, so that different sized taps having different sized squared terminals may be secured in the chuck.
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of a chuck having means for receiving the different sized squared terminals of taps and an improved means located below the means for receiving the squared tap terminals for adjustably engaging and clamping the shanks of thetaps.
A further object of theinvention is to provide an improved clamp which is capable of holding reamers used in hand work, the chuck body forming anefiicient handle for the reamer.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved chuck for holding taps and reamers of various sizes which is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.

Referring to the drawings in detail, where in similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates the improved taken on the line 4.4=
chuck which includes the tapered shank 11 having the flattened terminal 12 of the ordinary configuration. The lower end of the shank 10 is adapted to be connected to the solid cylindrical body 13 of the chuck by a removable collar 14, which includes an annular attaching flange 15, which is adapted to be secured to the chuck body 13 by suitable fastening elements such as screws 16. The collar 14 is provided withan inwardly extending annular peripheral rewhich is adapted to engage the outer surface of the annular rib 18 formed on the lower end of the tapered.

A leafspring'37 is provided for holding the disc 22 against accidental turning movement in the chuck body when one of there- 'cesses 23 has been brought into registration with the bore 24. The spring'37 has its lower end provided with an inwardly extending tooth 38 which is adapted to de- -tachably fit in any one'of :a plurality-of notches 39 formed in the periphery of the disc 22.

From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved chuck is provided for holding taps of various sizes which is of exceedingly durable and eflicient construction and which will eiiectively accomplish the purpose intended.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention; but,
I claim:
l. A chuck, comprising a body having a tool shank receiving opening formed therein, means arranged in the body having a plurality of difi'erent sized openings therein arranged to receive the inner ends of a tool shank, and means carried by said body and projecting into said tool shank receiving opening therein, for clamping a tool.
2. An improved chuck comprising a body having a tool shank receiving opening formed therein, the body having-a diametrically extending slot formed therein directly above the bore, a pin rotatably mounted in the body and extending through said slot, a disc keyed to said pin havinga plurality ofdifi'erent sized polygonal openings formed in the periphery thereof, means for turning the pin for r0- tating the disc to bring any one of the openings formed therein into alignment with the tool shank receiving opening, the disc havin a plurality of spaced notches, a leaf spring carried-by the body, and a tooth formed on the leaf spring for engaging in any one of the notches.
3. A chuck comprising a body having a tool receiving opening formed therein, a member rotatably mounted in the body having a plurality of different sized polygonal openings formed therein arranged to be brought into registration with the tool receiving opening, and adjustable jaws carried by the body and arranged to be brought into and out of the tool receiving opening below the rotatable member. 7

A chuck comprising a body having a tool shank receiving opening formed therein, a rotatable member arranged in the body having a plurality of different sized polygonal openings formed therein arranged to be brought into alignment with the tool shank receiving openings, a plurality of pivoted jaws carried by the body and arranged below the rotatable member, the jaws being adapted to extend into the tool shank receiving opening, and means for adjusting the jaws in relation to the tool shank receiving opening 5. An improved chuck comprising a body having a tool shank receiving opening formed therein, a member rotatably mounted in the body having a plurality of polygonal openings formed in the periphery thereof arranged to be brought into alignment with the tool shank receiving opening, a plurality of pivoted jaws carried by the body arranged below the rotatable member, said jaws being adapted toVeXtend into the tool shank receiving opening, spring means engaging the jaws to normally hold the same out of the tool shank receiving opening, and means for moving the jaws into the tool shank receiving opening.
6. A chuck comprising a body having a diametrically extending slot formed therein, a'pin rotatably carried by the body and extending through the slot, a disc keyed to the pin having a plurality of different sized polygonal openings formed in the periphery thereof, a plurality of pivoted jaws arranged below the disc, a sleeve arranged around the body, the lower end of the body being reduced and externally screw threaded, the lower terminals of the jaws having inclined outer faces, and a ring fitted on said threaded reducedterminal of the body and arranged to engage the inclined faces of the 7. A chuck comprising a body portion having a tool receiving opening therein, a disc having a plurality of different sized tool receiving recesses in its periphery, a shaft keyed to said disc and rotatably supported within said body portion, in suclr manner that any one of said recesses in said disc may align with said body opening, jaws pivoted within said body, and means for advancing said jaws to project into said body opening for clamping a tool.
