Description

W. F. SHOLL. COMBINATION SCREW. DRIVER AND TWEEZ ERS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 7. I917- Patented Dec. 18, 1917'.
"tritium/raj snoL L. or iiti'BBEL'LQ .iIE BiRAZSKQ I- Q COMBINATION sonnw-nnrv'snelvn" i wn'n'znns.
Application filed March 7, 1917. Serial No. 153,026.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SHoLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hubbell, in'the county of Thayer and State. of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Screw- Drivers and Tweezers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ,a Combined screw driver and tweezers especially adapted for the. handling of small screws such as are used by watch makers and repairers, but the device may be made in larger sizes and employed for use in holding screws of any size. It is, however, especially convenient in. picking up and setting in place small.
screws not readily handled by the fingers.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the device inposition for use.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the device, parts being shown in full lines in normal position and in dotted lines spread for use.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4.4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5 -5 of Fig. 1. In the drawings 1 represents a shank having a rotatable head 2. Mounted on" the lower 7 portion of the shank is a slidable sleeve 3 longitudinally slotted at 4', and a screw 5 extending through the slotinto the shank limits sliding movement of the sleeve. To opposite sides of the sleeve are secured spring tweezer members 6, which are adapted to embrace opposite sides of a screw driver 7 formed at the lower end of the shank, the device occupying a vertical position when in use. y Below the sleeve 3 is a second slidable sleeve 8 having a spiral slot 9 and a head'lO, the head being in the form of an inverted cone and being provided with slots 11. Inwardly extending pins 12 are carried by the tweezers and engage the cone 10.
A finger 13 is secured to a sleeve 17 and the free end ofthe finger engages-the spiral groove 9, of the sleeve 8.
To .aid in holding the screws so that they i a i of i er i I Patelited Y can be readily picked up by the device I employ a block 14 having tubular members 15,
:of assorted sizes on its upper face in which the screws 16 are held so that their heads can be readily grasped by the tweezers.v
The cone 10 forms a spreader for the ptweezers and'the operation of the device is as follows The sleeve 3 is moved downwardly andthe pins 12 riding on the cone,- the tweezers are spread apart, and when the .pins have passed below the cone they spring together, gripping the head of the screw,
After the screw .has been placed in position, '65 V or has been removed as may be the case, the sleeve 3' is lifted upwardly. This brings the pins into engagement with the lower face of the spreader, lifting it, and during such lifting movement it is rotated by means of the finger 13 engaging the spiral groove 9; Partial rotation of this sleeve and cone brings the notches 11 into alinement, with the pins 12, and they pass through the notches, releasing the cone. Sleeve 8 then drops by gravity to normal position, thereby taking the notches out of alinement with the pins, and the device is ready to use on another screw. I
For convenience of attachment I place the finger 13 on asinall sleeve 17 clamped to the shank by a screw 18, the sleeve 17 be-' ing stationary. But the said finger is to be.
and Ido'not wish to be limited to any special a slidable spreading element adapted to rotate as it slides, pins carried by the tweezers adapted to engage said spreader, and means for rotating the spreader duringits sliding movement, the spreader being notched, the notches coming into alinement with the pins during rotation of the spreader, as and for the purpose set forth. 1
2. The combination witha screw driver, and tweezers for holding a screw, of a slidable sleeve supporting the tweezers, pins carried by the tweezers, a second slidable sleeve having a spiral slot and anotched cone, and a finger engaging the spiral slot, the pins riding over the cone on sliding movement of the first mentioned sleeve and gitudinal movement, and means for causing passing through the notches on opposite rotation of the cone on opposite movement 10 movement of the first mentioned sleeve. of the tweezers thereby permitting said 3. In a device of the kind described, a members to pass through said notches, the
