To @ZZ 'whom t may concern Be it known that 1, Louis A. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Safety Harbor, in the county of Pinellas and'State of Florida,` have invented certain` new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and
the primary object of the invention is to provide an "improved socket wrench, which can be adjusted to different sizes for receiving'l different sized nuts, therebyeliminating the necessityfofl providingr a different sized head 4for each sizeof nut and the time consuined for picking out the correct sized head for the nut 4to be actedv upon.v
-Socket wrenches' generally come in sets embodying a handle and a plurality of heads of `difterents'izes forjacting upon nuts of different sizes, which necessitate the provision ofa lcas'eforthe heads and handle, which adds to thefcost and selling price of the wrench.
It is thereforea prime object of this invention to provide "a 4socket wrench embodying a head, means'forl operating the head, and a plurality of adjustable jaws carried by the head for engaging different Vsized nuts;

furtherobjectlof the'invention is` the provision of -a novel adjustable socket wrenchinwhich the adjustable jaws thereof can be removed 'from the-head of the wrenchf'when'the said jaws becomebroken or `when'it is desired toassociate a different type of jaw with the head. r
A `still further object of the invention is to provide an improved adjustable socket wrench ofthe above character, which4 will be durable and etlicient in use, one that will be simple andv easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed ,upon the market at a reasonable'cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described,

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the head of the'wrench; 1B, the jawsdetachably associated therewith; C, the adjusting nut ;D, the adjusting sleeve; and E, a means for, operating the said wrench.
The head A comprises a cylindrical shaped body 10, having an axial bore llextending therethrough for the reception of the adjusting bolt r12, which can be provided with a knurled head 13 tofacilitate the turning thereof. The bodyflO is provided atequidistantly spaced points with longitudinally extending slots 14, in which is adapted to be positioned the shanks of the jaws lB, as will be hereinafter morefully described. Adjacent to the upper terminals of the grooves 14, the body 10 is provided with an annular groove 15,\the purpose o-f which also will vbe hereinafter more fully described. The upper face of the body 10 can be provided with suitable mea-ns for permitting the manual turning thereof, and as shown the b ody is provided with a polygonal extension 16,
which is adapted to be engaged by the turning means E.
The turning means E as shown, simply includes a handle 17 and a head 19 provided` with a polygonal shaped opening 2O for receiving the polygonal shaped extension 16. It is obvious, however, that a suitable ratchet eennetten een be had between the head 19 of the turning means E and the head A if so desired, or that an ordinary hand brace attachment can be used with the head to turn the same. v
The body 10 is provided with external threads 21 for a portion of its length for the reception of the adjusting sleeve D, which will be 'hereinafter more fully described.
The lower end of the adjusting bolt 12 is provided with ina-le threads 22 for the reception of an adjusting nut C which will now be described. The adjusting nut C comprises a disc shaped body 25 provided with an internally threaded anialbore 26 for the threaded terminal 22 of the bolt 12 and its periphery is provided with equiclistantly spaced points with notches 27, which are in direct alignment with the slots 14 formed in the body 10 of the head A. The inner walls of these notches are inclined as at 28 so as to conform to the configuration of the shanks of the jaws B, which will now be described.
As shown, the jaws B are three in num.- ber and include the shanks 30 and the angularly related jaw faces 31 and V32.` These l jaw` faces 31 and 32 are angularly related, so
.that when the jaws B are in any adjusted position, they can enga-ge a hexagonal nut. The upper terminals of the Shanks 30 are provided with heads 33, which receive pins 34, which are adapted to fit in the annular groove 15, which forms a seat for the same, and permits the jaws to rock on said head. The shanks 30 of the jaws extend down,- wardly at an incline from their circularheads 33 as at l35, at a point intermediate the portion 35 of the shanks and the jaw facesV 31 and 32, the Shanks 3.0 are -bent outwardly defining the angularly related arms 86 yand 37 The angularly related arms 36 and 37 are adapted to conform to the internal configuration of the sleeve D which will be here-i inafter more fully described. The arms 36. are adapted to be received in the notches 27 formed in the adjusting nut C as can `be clearly seen byreierring to Figure 7 oi'- the drawings.
The adjusting sleeve D includes a hollow cylindrical bodyA 40, having internal threads 4-1ormed therein, a portion of its length for receiving the threads 21 formed on the body 10 to permit the` longitudinal adj.ust. ment of the sleeve on said body. The innersurface ofthe sleeve., 40 directly below-V theI threads k41 is cut-out to provide the oppoetely directly angnlarjly .disposed fases 4.3 and 44, which conform to the outer contignrnton 0f the arms. 30 .31.
In assemblying the improved'adjustable socket wrench, the jaws B are placed within the grooves 14 Jformed in the body 10 of the head A, and the pins 34 thereof are placed within the groove 15. The nut C is then threaded on the threaded terminal 22 of the bolt 12, after which the sleeve D can be threaded on the head. llhe wrench is now ready for use and can be readily turned by means of the means E or Asome other equivalent device.
In use of the improved wrench, the `bolt 12 is turned .So as to feed the nut G outwardly on the bolt 12 when it is desired `to .engage a relatively small nut, and the outward movement of the adjusting nut C' permits the jaws B to swing inwardly toward each other. The sleeve D is then rotated which will forcibly move the jaws B inwardly and bind the V Same into tight engagement with the nut, which precludes movement of the inns, thereby permitting n rn grip t0 be had on the nut t0 be turned. v t
It can be seen that a relatively Awide lrange of adinstlnent can be had, S0 that a number of ellferent sized nuts can be acted upon Aand thus the tool will effectively eliminate the necessity of providing a different sized head for each size off nnt- 1 Changes in details may be made Vwithout departing from the Spirit orl scope of this invention; but,
I claim:
1. In an adjustable socket wrench, a mov able head, means connected with the head for actuatingthe same, a plurality of jaws pivoted to the head and arranged to extend outwardly from one face thereohand adjustable means associated with the head for engaging the inside and outside facesy of the jaws for adjusting the jaws relative to veach other and for holding thesaid jaws in their adjusted position, the means for engaging the outside faces `oit the j aws, being operable independently of thev means engaging the inside facesy of the jaws.
2. In an adjustable socket wrench,l a ro,-A tatable head having external threads for-med thereon for a portion of its length, a plu rality of jaws pivoted to said head and arranged to extend below the. lower acetheree of, vmeans for turning' said head, an adjustable ,nut carried by the head and arranged to engage the inner surface'of the jaws fory moving thel same outwardly, and an adjustable sleeve threaded` on the1 head movable independently ci? they movement of the adjustable nut to` move the jaws; rinwardly and into clamping engagement with sai-d nut'.
3, In an adjustable sachet Wrench, amer-- able head, a plurality of jaws removably associated with the head for swinging movement, an adjustable nut member carried by the head for engaging the inner faces of the jaws, an adjustable sleeve carried by the head movable independently of the movement of the adjustable nut to engage the outer surface of the jaws, and means for imparting movement to the head.
4. In an adjustable socket wrench, a cylindrical head having longitudinally extending grooves formed in the outer surface thereof and an annular groove communicating with the longitudinally extending grooves, a plurality of removable jaws pivotally associated with said head including relatively long Shanks, and angularly related jaw faces, the Shanks including angularly related arms,
and pivot pins carried by the upper terminals of the arms arranged to detachably lit in said annular groove, the head having an axial bore, an operating member rotatably fitted in said bore, having the inner end thereof threaded, an actuating nut threaded upon the threaded terminal of the operating member and having inclined notches formed in the periphery thereof for receiving the arms of the shanks of the jaws, a sleeve threaded upon said head having the inner end thereof provided with a working face for engaging the outer surface of the arms of the jaws, and an operating handle connected with said head.
5. In an adjustable socket wrench, a movable head, a plurality of jaws removably associated with the head for swinging movement, movable means engaging the inner faces of the jaws to move them apart, and means independently operable of the first means, for moving said jaws toward each other.
