The absence of any record card or its presence` in reverse position would then mclicate, for example, that the particular room is vacant. For convenience in manipulation the record cards have less width in a horizontal direction than the index or hase cards, as indicated in Figures l and 4.

The support or leaf c upon which the cards are mounted, may be formed of any suitable material und in any convenient manner. Any rerord card can be withdrawn readily at any time either to receive additional matter or to be replaced by another card.

It will be obvious'that various changes in details can be made to suit different conditions of use and that the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown and described herein, except as pointed out in the claims.

We rlaim as our invention:

l. In en index or file, a sheet metal support comprising a main body portion and lateral strips secured thereon and having their edge portions turned forward and inward to form guard flan s, inwardly di rected retaining flanges eing formed on said support.

2. In an index or file the combination of n support having retaining flanges, index cards having die cut portions or ears to engage said flanges and to maintain the cards in overlapped relation, and record cards of less width in a vertical direction than the index cards and bearing;r at one edge against the die cut portions ir ears of the correspending index cards.

3. In an index or file the combination of a support having' retaining flanges and having at its edges guard ianges, index cards having die out portions to engage the retain ing flanges, and record cards of less width in vertical direction than the index cards inserted between the index cards.
