CHECK-PROTECTOR.
To all whom/112, may concern:
Be it known that I, ORTON R. (forms, a citizen of the United States residing at the city of Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Check- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates primarily to a means to protect checks taken from a pocket check book and the object thereof is to provid a device which can be readily placed upon a pocket check book and used to protect checks taken therefrom, and when the book is used up can be placed upon another book.
,In the drawings forming a part. of this application Figure'l is a view ofa pocket check book with my check protector in position thereon to protect a check drawn for $40.00. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 isa pocket check book composed of checks, 6provided with stubs 7. On the ends of the checks adjacent to the stubsare vertical rows of figures indicating dollars. The first rlgw of ay Order and is composed of 13-58 1012. The next row begins with 15 and the numbers increase by 5. Other rows can be added as desired. On the face of the check when the blank check is printed is a line as follows: Pay no more than amount indicated in left. The words Void if margin is detached are also printed on the face. The protector is composed of the base plate, 8 having a rib 9- with an enlarged round end 10 and lugs 11 projectin from the ends at the rear edge thereof. 2. back strip 12 has its ends turned at right angles to the main portion. These ends are pro vidcd with apertures 13,-in which are received lugs 11, and the pocket check book 'is slipped between plate 8 and strip 12, and
has a sliding fit therebetweem Mounted jrib, 9 to keep onrovia in the county of Los Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 13, 1921 Application filed May 24,
1820. Serial No. 383,828.
upon plate 8 is thecutter blade 14 which has.
a portion near the rear edge bent to fit over the cutter from separating from the'plate. The cutterl has a stop lug '15 at the upper end which engages the ends of strip 12 to keep the cutter from being drawn off the plate. At the lower end is an operating lug 16 to facilitate the moving of the cutter. i
With a check book ofthis character of blank checks carried in the pocket the drawer of a check can always protect his checks from being raised p by severin from the check all numbers above the argest amount of dollars for which the check is drawn. As illustrated in the drawings the device is so positioned that a check can be.
severed along the edge of the cutter so that when delivered 40 will "be the highest number onthe check which shows that it was drawn for not over $40.00. I
After each check is drawn the slots in the .ends of the back strip permits the other parts of the device to be lowered upon the other checks after the stubs are withdrawn.
It will be understood that the back strip is.
ofv resilient metal so that the ends may be sprung over the lugs of the back plate.
aving described my invention, I claim:
A check protector for checks having vertical rows of figures indicating various amounts in dollars, said protector including a base plate having lugs at the ends thereof,
and a longitudinal rib *with an enlarged head, a back strip having ends turned at right angles to the main portion, said ends having apertures therein in which are received the lugs of the base plate; and a cutter plate having a portion bent to fit upon the rib of the baseplate andastop lug at its upper end.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 12th day of May, 1920.
ORTON R. JONES.
