Description

CARD FILING SYSTEM; APPLICATION HLED'APR. 26. I91? 1,296,956, Patented Mar. 11,1919.

OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF SOUTH DAKOTA.
CARD-FILIN G SYSTEM.
Application filed April 26, 1917. Serial No. 164,614.
To allicitom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES R. HENDRY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago and county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card-Filing Systems,
Thisinvention relates to improvements in card filing systems and has among its salient objects to provide a construction in which a series of overlapping holders are detachably mounted in a frame and each holder pro-' vided with a pocket for receiving one or more cards or slips; to provide a construction in which the overlapping holders may,
if if desired, be mounted-*on either side of the frame so as to obtain a maxlmum number of holders and cards in a minimum space; to provide a construction of the character referred to having signaling means for determining by mere ocular inspection, without removing or raising the cards or, holders thecondition or: classification of the cataloguing 'or'other data contained on any given card or upon a plurality of cards in any given holder to provide a construction in which the holders are so formed as'to expose the lower edge of the card in the holder and in which each card may itself have an exposed portion independent of the'other cards; to provide aconstruction in which.
not only may each card have its individual designating or cataloguing number but also each holder may be also similarly designated; and in general to provide an improved construction of the character referred to.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a fragmentary front elevation of my invention, parts being shown in dot- L ted lines to bring out details of construction.
Fig. 2'is a side elevation of theconstruction shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation view on an enlarged scale, of one ofthe holders showing the manner of inserting the cards.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the card holder.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the signaling guides or tabs.
Fig. 6 is a horizontal, sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings 1 designates,
as a whole the frame comprising aflat cenof which'the following is a specifi:
JAMES R. HENDEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ACME CARD SYSTEM COMPANY,
tral web portion2, provided at its opposite vertical edges with marginal members 3 and '4 respectively. These marginal members are suitably secured to the central web portion and each is provided with an inwardly facing channeled portion 5, and terminates outwardly in a bead 6, the latter serving to hold-adjustable guide tabs which are not shown as a formal part of the present invention.
Detachably mounted in the channel members .of the frame are a plurality of superimposed carriers 7, each of which in the present instance, consists of awire 8, bent back upon itself, at each end as shownat 9, and terminating in inwardly extending free ends 10. carriers by.means of hinges 11 is a holder designated as a whole 12. The hinges 11 slip easilyon the ends 10 of the carriers and Suspended from each of these' are readily attached or detached therefrom.
rovide an exposed sight opening or windbw.
Each pocket 14 is adapted toreceive a plurality of cataloguing or identifying cards 16, 16. If desired, each of these cards may be provided with a.plurality of ruled spaces 1, '2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, as shown and these figures may, if desired, be made at the lower end of the eard, to-wit, at that portion which is exposed through the window of the pocket. In order to designate the condition of any given work or anygiven data on any card relative to one of the spaces, I
a the many uses to which the inventionmay be put, for example, the particular system shown might be'used for the purpose of readily determining how a large catalogue of a mail order house was belng made up. Each pocket. might be designated with a given number referring to thepage of the provide anidentifying tab 17, which in the catalogue such as 286, 287, 288 and 289, etc., and each pocket representing the given page,
might have a plurality ofcards, each card being for the purpose of showing the various datato be put on that'page. For example, each card might represent the out to be put on the particular part of the page and the various parts showing how far along the work had progressed, showing whether the original d'rawinghad been made, whether the same had been approved, whether the plate had been made and .had been finished,
' and when the out had been returned by the engraving house,-and when the electrotype had been made. In a very large catalogue, it is very ditficult to keep track of all this data for-the many thousands of cuts and this skilled in the art.
system provides a ready and intelligent guide and check.
It is, of course, apparent that the foregoing is merely one use to which the invention may be put, as is apparent to those The invention is not limited to the details of construction shown,
except as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
, 1. In a card filing system, the combination with a main frame, of a plurality of over- 2. In a card filing system, the combination i with a iframehaving a plurality of overlapping holders mounted therein, each of said holders having a pocket provided with a cut-away portion at its lower end and a plurality of cards mounted in said pocket,
and each provided with predetermined designating spaces and a tab adjustably mounted on any given one of said spaces and exposed through the cu't-away portion of the pocket.
.3. In a card filing system, the combinationv with a main frame, of a plurality of-overlapping holders mounted therein, each holder having at its lower end a pocket-provided with a cut-awa-y portion', one or more cards 'detachably seated in'said pocket and having a portion exposed in the cut-away portion 0 the pocket.
