T0 all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, FREDERICK F. ZAvAT- KAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winsted, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ice Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in Connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-

This invention relates tov im rovement in ice cutters and particularly ir attachment to snowplows of railway engines, the object being to provide a device which may be used in connection with snowplows of usual construction designed to be raised or,
lowered to meet conditions required by depth of ice to be cut, and which will have aV sawing or shearing effect on the ice, so that it will operate with less friction and permit the plow to be run at a comparatively high rate of speed, and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ two bases in the form of channel-irons l5 and 16 which are attached to the'front plates 17 of a vertically adjustable snowplow adapted to be attached to the front of a railway plow, the plates being arranged at an-angle, so as to form a wedge-shaped plow. Between the channel and the plates 17 is a cushion-block 18 and secured to the face of the channel-irons are a series of cutters 19 having forwardly-projecting cuttingedges 2O formed at their outer ends with beveled saw-teeth 21. Eight cutters are usually required for each side of the plow and the cutters are so arranged on the channel that the cutting-edge is at an angle of about thirty degrees. These cutters are separated from each other by spacing-lugs 22 projecting upward from a metal fillerblock 23 located within the channel-irons below the cutters, so as to provide a rigid support therefor. In front of the cutters are blocks 24 of iron or armored wood.
The cutters are bolted to the channel-iron; the blocks 24 also bolted to the channel-iron and all bolted to the front plate of the plow, so as to form a rigid construction necessary to stand the strain imposed upon it when cutting ice undei` pressure of a high-powered engine. By arranging the cutters as shown they have a sawing or shearing effect on the ice, resulting in easy operation, due t0 lack of friction, so that the plow may be run at a comparatively high rate of speed.
This device will not only remove ordinary snow from the rails but will cut away heavy coatings of ice from the top of the rail, inside the rails, and for a suilicient distance outside the rails to a depth of three inches below the top of the rail.
I claim:
1. An ice cutter comprising bases adapted to be secured to the front plate of a snowplow, a series of fiat cutters secured to the outer face of said bases, said cutters having forwardly-projecting cutting-edges provided with a plurality of beveled teeth.
2. An ice cutter comprising channel-irons adapted to be secured to the front plate of a snowplow, blocks between said channel and front plate, a series of cutters secured to the outer face of the channel-iron, and provided with orwardly-projecting cuttlngedges, blocks within said channels below said cutters and provided with spacers extending outward between the cutters.
3. An ice cutter comprisin channel-irons adapted to be secured to the ront plate of a snowplow, cutters secured to the outer face In testimon7 whereof, I have signed this ot' sind channels, said cutters having for- Specification 111 the presence of two sub- Wardlyand downwardlvprojeetlng cuttingscrlblng Witnesses.
