J. BERCZIK SNOWPLOW Filed Feb. 19, 1923 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Jfier' oz 270,
WITNESSl-S ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES JOHN BER-CZIK, 0F DAISYTQWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
snowrtow.
Application filed February 19, 1923. Serial No. 620,026.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J OHN Bnncznr, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Daisytown, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snowplows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in snow plows, the general object of the invention being to provide means for dividing the mass of snow into sections so as to reduce friction and facilitate the plow throwing the mass to each side of the track.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide means at the rear of the plow for di recting the snow on this part of the plow downwardly and outwardly and thus prevent it from dropping upon the track in rear of the plow.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a plan view of the device.
Figure 2 is a side View showing the invention attached to a locomotive.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the device. v
Figure t is a transverse sectional View.
In these views 1 indicates a frame which is mounted upon the wheels 2 so that the plow can travel upon a track. The frame is provided with a draw bar 3 so that it can be attached to a locomotive or car or the like. The inclined sides of the plow are shown at t and adjacent the point of the plow is located a horizontal blade 5 which has its cutting ed e extending beyond the sides of the plow. This blade acts to cut the snow immediately above the track so that it can be easily engaged by the inclined sides. A knife edge 6 is placed at the junction of the sides for dividing the mass of snow lifted by the plow so that it can be turned by the sides to either side of the track. Curved wings 7 are arranged on each side for dividing the mass of snow on each side into sections, these wings being inclined downwardly towards the rear of the plow and are so formed as to turn the snow outwardly and downwardly to one side of the track. A larger wing 7 is placed at the extreme rear of each side of the plow and this wing is arranged to prevent any snow from dropping over the rear of the plow. The ends of these wings 7 are bent at an angle, as at 7", to flatten the snow at the sides of the track and pack the same. Upright blades 8 are carried by the lower part of the plow below the first wings, an appreciable distance fro-m the point, these blades acting to out the mass of snow lifted by the plow from the snow at each side of the track. Brushes 9 are connected, with the bottom of the plow and are arranged to engage the rails of the track in front of the wheels.
From the above it will be seen that the mass of snow lifted by the plow is: divided into sections and is thrown to each side of the track so that the entire mass of snow is not lifted by the plow at one time and friction is reduced toa minimum. The blades out the mass from the snow remaining adj acent the track and the rear wings prevent any snow from dropping upon the track at the rear of the plow.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A snow plow of the class described comprising a wheeled frame, a plow of inverted V-shape in cross section attached to the frame, a horizontal blade at the front end of the plow and connected with the bottom thereof, said blade projecting beyond the edges of the plow, upright blades connected with the lower side edges of the plow at the rear of the horizontal blade, and deflecting wings on the sloping sides of the plow.
2. A snow plow of the class described comprising a wheeled frame, a plow of inverted V-shape in cross section attached to the frame, a horizontal .b-lade :at the ';front "end of the plow and connected with the bottom thereof, the edges of the blade projecting beyond the edges of theplow, upright blades connected with the lower side edges ofithe plow an appreciable distance from the point thereof, deflecting wings on the sloping sides of the plow, said wings being of curved formation and inclining downwardly towards the rear of the plow and the rear wings being of greater width than the other wingsand extending beyondthe rearvend of the {glow and having their 'terminals ar ranged to pack the snow at the sides of the i track.
In testimony whereofl affix my signature.
JOHN BERCZIK.
